I have flown on United/Continental and American Airlines 777's and have expeirianced both types of config! Personnally i prefer the 3-3-3 seating plan as i think it gives you much more freedom if you are stuck in the middle row, however if there are 2 of us travelling i prefer the 2-5-2 config as we can both get an aisle/window seat!!!
What do you guys prefer and why???

For my first 777 trip last week, 3 seats on the outside. I was able to
wangle a row to myself EGKK-KIAH on Sunday. It was great to lay
almost flat and sleep across the pond. Could not do that with two
seats on the outside.

As a rule of thumb, I always say no to the middle seat. That being said, I liked DL's 2x5x2 configuration over 3x3x3. 
Ah, Summer, Fenway Park, Boston Red Sox and Beer.....

The 2-5-2 configuration is way better! On United's international 777s at least, the economy cabin needs to be 93% full before they need to use the "E" seats. It is also more pleasant when travelling in pairs to have 2 seats, and not have some drooling stranger between you two.(or around one of you) Once I was flying a UA 757 flight from ORD to LAS and it was miserable! I was between two Chinese people who kept leaning over me and talking loudly to each other. I offered for them to sit together, but they did not want to! Let me tell you, it was completely miserable! Probably the only flight I ever wanted to end!

Depends on where your seat is. If in one of the two outer seats on 2x5x2 then its better. If you get the middle seat of 5 then you'll be wishing it were 3x3x3

2-5-2 honestly speaking as long as I am not sitting in the middle, that's pretty alright. I always choose the window seat.

Absolutely agree with FlyLondon. It all depends on where your seat is. I have always felt pity for the passenger seating in the middle seat of a 2-5-2 config with two passengers seating on his/her each side. From his/her point of view 3-3-3 is of course better. But when travelling in pair or have a window or aisle seat in the side of a 2-5-2 configuration then you can't help thinking "this is the best configuration."

Don't forget, some airlines have 3-4-3 seating on their B772s! Pretty tight I must say!
I prefer 3-3-3 because it is more spread out. 2-5-2 is good for the window seat, but imagine how bad it would be sitting right smack in the middle of the 2-5-2 seating!

How about a 2-4-2 with some wider seats. I'm a stick and the current seats are uncomfortable. Couldn't imagine if I put on a couple.

I prefer the 2-5-2 layout. I don't like to have two people next to me on a long-haul flight when I am at the window. That is why I'd also prefer ANY Airbus and the 767 over a 747.

According to TG's own seat map they only have 3-4-3 on the 777-200 including 2-4-2 in business class so I'd guess that it is mainly used on short haul routes.

Only flown 777 twice, American LHR-ORD-LHR and it was 2-5-2, I think if the load is light then this config is okay, but I'd hate being stuck in the middle of 5 on a full flight, on the return leg I had 5 to myself which was great.
What's with paying $4 or 3 GBP for a beer though??? Too used to free drinks on the routes to and from JNB I guess....

Since I tend to travel along or with one other person and always book early and reserve my seat in advance then a 2-5-2 without a doubt. I used to be a fan of the 3-3-3 but travelling alone on a crowded plane with a window seat climbing over two people during a night flight when they are asleep. Terrible.
The best would be a 2-4-3 arrangement which caters for most party sizes and would keep the most people happy. Finnair I think it is has a similar config on their MD-11, so why does nobody give it a go on the 777 - is it just because it looks too messy???

I prefer the 2-5-2 layout, but I can see both have their advantages. A plane on 3-3-3 can be a little fuller before the airline has to start sitting strangers next to each other, while the window seat on 2-5-2 is less cramped.
On the 2-5-2 layout only the 'E' seats are 'double excuse me' seats where on the 3-3-3 it is the A and J seats. Coupled with the two directions from an E-seat this theoretically means about 1/4 as many passengers need to be disturbed when the occupants of these seats need to take a dump or whatever (in E row one can alternate sides).

I loved the LH DC 10-configuration 2-5-2. But wasn't nice to have the middle-seat in the middle

Personally prefer 3-3-3, but as UniTED said flight needs to be 93% full before the E seat is used on 2-5-2. Having suffered that E seat LHR-ORD I hate it!

Yeah NZ (Air New Zealand) used to have the 2-4-3 configuration on its old DC-10-30's. Great for the travelling public who'd have the best seating options for their flying contingent and even better for the airline who can seat people more happily.

Do any airlines have 2-4-3 on a 777?? I've only flown 3-4-3 on EK 773s. It was pretty good I thought, but am looking forward to SQ 772s to compare.

Delta and another American airline have 2-4-3. Either CO, UA, or AA. I forgot. A similar topic was posted on another thread in the past.

To be honest I think both configurations are terrible, that is why I don't like the 747 as well, I will always prefer the 767 or the A330/A340 family.

2-5-2, in coach gets my vote, especially if your in the 3rd seat in the middle of the middle in between 2 massive people who seep onto your personal space.

we have 3-3-3 on BA, which seems to work well.
the 2-5-2 config on Malaysian reminds me of the tristars I used to work on with the awful E seat in the middle.
I don't know how EK gets away with 3-4-3. We had that on some of our caribbean routes that were flown by contract crew from another airline, but they were reconfigured back to 3-3-3 a couple of years ago.
I used to fly charter flight on 767-300ERs with 2-4-2 configs. I used to have to walk sideways down the aisle!
