Oscar(R) Chooses United Airlines to Travel to Los Angeles Ceremony
Thursday February 19, 10:49 am ET

CHICAGO, Feb. 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- As the official airline sponsor of the Academy Awards, United Airlines (OTC Bulletin Board: UALAQ - News) will roll out the red carpet today for the Oscar statuettes and the passengers of Oscar Flight # 109. Transporting 50 Oscars from Chicago's O'Hare International Airport to Los Angeles International Airport this morning, United and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are partnering to transport the Oscars that will be presented on February 29th at the 76th Annual Academy Awards Ceremony.

"For many years United has played an important role supporting the entertainment industry, and we are excited to be involved in this important event to recognize the achievements from the year past," said Martin White, United's Senior Vice President of Marketing. "In addition to carrying the Oscar statuettes, we will also provide transportation to many Oscar nominees, presenters and special guests who will travel to Los Angeles for the Awards ceremony."

Upon arrival today at the Los Angeles International Airport, Terminal 7, Gate 72 at 12:19 p.m. (PST), the flight will be met by Frank Pierson, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Martin White will be arriving on Oscar Flight # 109 and media have been invited to witness the arrival of the statuettes and attend a special reception in United's Red Carpet Club.

The flight will feature star treatment for its passengers, with champagne provided by Gloria Ferrar. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences granted special permission to United Airlines to incorporate a 4 foot high, 20 inch-wide image of the Oscar statuette onto the aircraft for the Flight of the Oscars. Designed in San Francisco by a team of commissioned engineers, the image of the Oscar was applied by a special process onto both sides of the aircraft's fuselage by a team of highly trained technicians from United Operations.

As part of its partnership with United, the Academy will make four tickets available for the Red Carpet Arrival bleacher seats on Oscar night, through a sweepstakes on United's 1K member website. The Sweepstakes began earlier this week and winners will be selected by February 23th. The winners will also receive an invitation to the exclusive event "The Night Before," benefiting the Motion Picture and Television Fund.

During the Oscar broadcast United will also debut a new global brand campaign, introducing a new visual look created by Academy recognized animation artists. The campaign debuted in print on February 18th and will have its television premiere in key United cities during the Academy Awards telecast on February 29th.

United, United Express and Ted operate more than 3,400 flights a day on a route network that spans the globe. News releases and other information about United can be found at the company's web site at www.united.com .

What is the purpose of this post?

By the way, in case this photo seems a bit weird, visit the site: http://www.jetphotos.com/oscar.jpg and make that you are viewing it in its full size, it looks "real" that way.

I enjoyed the post and thank you for the information. If you look at the aircraft there is an Oscar Award on it. Pretty Neat...

For me, I really like the new job...could not stand the "gray" one at all...My sister who flies for UAL ...is now calling that "blue, we are so blue"....instead of "gray, we are just gray and sad".

I went to ORD last night to see the plane come in. I noticed as they were adjusting the Jetway that the Oscar imprinted on the side in front of the doors. The Statuettes are made by a company here in Chicago and we always fly them to LA right before the ceremony's (you'll remember one year they disappeared!). So, I figured out pretty fast that their timing of the new colors was Very intentional. It's the whole more for less thing they've been so good at since declaring bankruptcy.

Just saw the 'Oscar' adorned UAL 777 (N775UA) depart LAX for ORD and LHR. In person. it's impressive! That thing brightens up Terminal 7 and 8 when it arrived among a sea of drab gray old colored UAL aircraft. As it taxied out paralleling a UAL 744..it certainly was the star of the moment....the Tower controllers couldn't restrain themselves from talking about it!

Go UAL, GO!

Since UA is going to be carrying a lot of the nominees, presenters and special guest to the ceremony in LA, perhaps people who are traveling to LA during that time may be on the same flights as the celebrities.
Would be nice to sit in First Class with Nicole Kidman or Russell Crowe from Australia. Or Ken Watanabe from Japan, Hugh Grant from England just to name a few.

Ahh, the article explain it  Big grin
It was featured at the end of ET Tonight on CBS and I instantly recognised the plane.

Then again, who couldn't with such a hideous plane...I mean a newly painted plane...right.  Laugh out loud

"And the winner is....

definitely NOT United's new colors....."

I think that it would be: And the Oscar goes to: United Airlines, for flying the Oscars, not the new paint job."

Sorry folks, the UAL jokes are just too tempting to pass up.

I guess that it is beginning to grow on me...

P.S. UAL did a great idea - roll out the new scheme, have a publicity event by having it carry the Oscars and get publicity about UAL and the new scheme. Props to United.

Good job United.

I am currently waiting in the RCC for my trip on N775UA to LHR as UA938. It's parked at C10 and can't see it from here, but it supposedly just arrived from LAX.

I will update tomorrow with a quick report on the flight, but I can't imagine it will be much different than any other trans-atlantic flight.

As far as the paint goes, I think it's rather slick.

There's another Oscar contingent that will be taking a different plane to LAX.

Not bad, but the blue and white look cold. There needs to be a dash of red and orange in the mix to give it some character. And the tulip logo needs to small enough to fit on the tail and it should be red.

"the blue and white look cold."

I agree, Airways6max.

Also, the touch of red in the fuselage logo looks odd - with red not being used anywhere else on the plane. I think it's a new livery that just misses being attractive. (like Northwest's!)

Nwacrew et al: I agree, to an extent. While I like the new livery, I believe there could be a bit more red in there. Perhaps on the tail?

I love the new UA Livery. It is great. Looks so much better than the old gray livery that I hated ever since they applied it over their old livery.

Have they got a new catch-phrase to go with their new livery?

Last was Rising and before that The Friendly Skies. The former meant what exactly and the latter was a mostly over-promise.

Livery wise, from a marketing perspective, I think the new one looks aloof and distant, like an attractive girl that you were interested in at school, but were too scared to approach. Personally, I think it's very slick and tasteful.

IMHO

What is with all this talk about red? Haven't you noticed that red is almost gone from the UA brand other than the tulip? And even then, the red is gone from the tulip most of the time.

Red has been removed from the new brand, the new decor, and the new paint job. It likely wont come back.

hmmmm, I think the 90s United livery was somewhat classic and timeless.

I am not sure that their new livery is in the same league, in terms of design, plus, I think those aircraft will look mighty dirty after a few months.....

at least the old scheme did a good job of hiding the grime.
