Best Place To View 36l/18R At Tampa

Sat Feb 21, 2004 10:21 am

Anybody know the best place to view the runway. I usuall go between the delta hangar off of MLK to view 18L but its not used as much as i like. I am tired of all the WN planes i have enough photos to last a lifetime

Have you tried the Central Parking Deck? It's been about eighteen months since I've flown through TPA, but I've had pretty good luck. Also, if you like to relax while you're spotting, CJ's in the top of the Marriott offer a decent view with it's revolving deck. I make it a point every time I'm at TPABig grin

I was up watching and taking photos from the parking structure back in January and wasn't questioned once, so maybe it's worth another shot.

It seemed like a really friendly place. I didn't get any of the strange looks from passengers that usually come when I'm taking photos. There was even a guy up there playing with a dog.

This is from the TPA airport website:

"For guests with some time to spend at the Airport we suggest the following activities:

To step outside for some fresh air: take the elevators or escalators up to Level 9 of the main terminal to the rooftop level of the Short Term Parking Garage for 360 degree view of the airport."

The central parking deck offers the best views of movements at TPA.Also CKs restaurant on top of the hotel offers good views of the airport, however i don't know how they would like it if you were taking pictures while you ate your meal.

they didnt like me taking pictures at LAX. God only knows what they'll do at TPA. I guess the parking deck is the best bet. I went to the bowling alley and its the best angle i think. except for a/c on final. but it does not suite the take off. thanks for all your input

See reply 25 & 26 in this thread:

Also, the park and the beach south of the field are open. Lie on the beach as 747s, 777s, A340s........errrrrrr, make that A320s, 737s, MD-80s land in close proximety.

And across the bridge over at PIE, you can see unusual airlines.

JAXFLYI: Thanks for the correction on the Marriott @ TPA. Been there about twenty times and ALWAYS end up referring to CK's as CJ's. Embarrassment It's a great place to at least relax and spot. Big grin

Expensive is relative to the person

But in my opinion yes. About 25 for a hamburger and fries.

Its dressy too. Suits n ties.

727Lover: CK's is maybe a little pricy, being a part of Marriott. Every time I fly through TPA on my way back to ATL, I have dinner there and take the last DL flight back at around 8:30pm. They have a "Early Bird" special: In by six and out by eight I want to say. And they validate your parking. It offers a great view, especially at Sunset. If you want to enduldge your self, I can think of worse ways. Big grin
Happy spotting!

And how much is that Early Bird Special? Is this place more expensive than say, Red Lobster?

I don't remember off hand, but I would say comparable. I always went with my partners parents, when he gets back from doing errands, I'll ask him. Or call the Marriott and ask for the restaurant and they can give you the details. They have some great items on the menu.  Smile It's a great place to spot. Big grin

Just asked my partner. It IS a little pricy, but they do have the special I mentioned. I was quoted around $50.00 per person depending on drinks, etc. We've gone up there and just had drinks (2) and it was about $18.00 before tip. I never paid attention, being at an airport- they got you. As I said, it makes for a nice occasional endulgance or even date if the person your with is into aviation or a nice view.  Smile

I hear ya!  Laugh out loud But it's not that hard. I've done it a few times. I only do it on weekends though. Lot less traffic.

The park/beach is in the commerce park at the west end of Cypress St.

Now, how is the view of 18L arrivals from that new employee lot? I'd sure like to get in there! Big grin

Unfortunately the view from the employee lot is not that great. Lots of tree's in the way. Now the old employee lot, THAT was good!

I will have to try the commerce park. Not sure where that is but I can probably find it by just driving around. Is it around the area where the INS building is?

I can't answer that because I don't know where the INS building is!!  Laugh out loud

From the entrance of International Mall, go south on Westshore, down 2 lights to Cypress St (Shell station). Turn right. Now you're heading west. Go AAAAAALLLLLLLLLL the way down until that street dead ends into the commerce park. You should be able to find the park/beach afterward.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy If aircraft are landing on 36L, they should fly right above you.

Do you know Frank Ciotti? I watched Bush leave on Monday w/ him, shared an elevator up to 9th floor. Also in elevator was Mr. Cooley (1st name?), apparently TPA's #2 man behind Louis Miller.

My office building is north of Waters off Anderson Road. Flight path is basically right over the Holiday Inn Express at Anderson Road where the Veterans Expressway lets off at Anderson. I always enjoy going out for a smoke and watching the planes coming in. Trying to guess what a/c and airline. Always recognize that BA 777 when she comes in. Probably get some good head-on shots or underneath shots.

I used to work on Linebaugh just east of Anderson. We were in the flight path of 36L-18R.

Did you see the motorcade?

No. NuAir is south of Waters on Anderson. I come from Pasco, so no traffic for me. I mean, no long delays because of the presidents visit Monday. We did see AF1 just after takeoff. Took off on 36R. Seen, done it, been on board so wasnt running to the window to see but still a sight.

Probably the best spot to watch and snap pictures is from the top of the short term parking lot. CK's would have to much glass and they would make you purchase something. Also along the south end of the runways headed toward the international plaza is a good spot to look at departures on 36R. Can't stop on the freeway interance where 36L is. However, there are some spots to stop on Hillsborough Ave for the arrivals and departures. Good Luck.

I used to work at what is now Bank of America at the west end of Idlewild Ave (via Hoover Blvd north of Hillsborough)...was always interesting having lunch outside watching planes...on occasion, a plane would come almost right over us as they switched from one runway to the other right before landing...we had to have disaster plans in case a plane hit the bldg...that was downside to working that close to path...something could go wrong...but never did! So far...
