What Is This Plane Doing....?

Sat Feb 21, 2004 5:05 pm

This pic intrigued me when the question in the caption poses the question, "Anybody wanna guess, if this is a take-off or landing?"

I think, based on the angle of the plane to the tarmac, it's landing. It's a little to horizontal to the tarmac to be a take-off. If it were a take-off, I think the angle of the plane would be pitch steeper towards the sky.

Anybody else wanna take a guess? I will try and contact the photographer to see what the verdict is.

I would say landing due to the Flap setting, Elevator Trim and the small amount of heat exhaust coming out the engine!

Just my guess  Smile

I'm gonna say landing, just by looking at his flap setting. Seems to be extended pretty far.

His comment says "Soaking up the last reminants of the summer sun as she rolls out on runway 16R."

I'm assuming he means taking off and the flap setting looks high on this one, so definitely confusing! ..... Hopefully the photographer can tell us if the MD11 is landing or taking off!  Smile

(I stick with landing though)

for the first pic.. i believed it is landing... dunno why.. maybe jsut my sixth sense.. haha..

well.. for the second one.. i would say it is taking off.. there wasn't any smoke formed.. far too smooth for a "heavy" aircraft.. well.. probably the gear has not contact with the ground yet.. but still.. i think it is taking off

Rolling out refers to landing...it's the point where your wheels have touched down and your braking (rolling out).

Landing 20R based on Flaps and the fact that its only 1/3rd the way up the runway based on the taxiway sign W5. Id love to see an MD11 takeoff using only 13rd of the runway!

thats just my thought though

The FX MD-11F is landing. Look @ the position of the trailing edge flaps.

I would have to say the aircraft is landing in the second picture....
Reason being that the aircraft is passing the T2 (Old Ansett Terminal).
For an aircraft outbound for HNL to lift-off from that spot it must be very light indeed!

Landing, given the flap setting and that on takeoff the angle of attack would be slightly more precipitous

Unless FedEx procedure is to take off with full flaps and an idle thrust setting.....then I'm quite sure he's landing. Not even worth questioning, really.

Easily landing. In the first shot at the top, it shows the aircraft having an angle in relation to the horizon being small in comparison to the angle when rotating.

Example:

This photo shows an angle which is greater.

This one, the angle is less extreme.

Also, you can check the flap settings!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Kind of late here, must have missed this topic. My guess is that it was a go-around (perhaps she came in too high and too fast). I have a photo of a Fedex MD-11 going around, photographed at the very same airport, only the wind direction was different.

Having been to Singapore many times, I can tell you that if that MD-11 was landing . . . the plane would have well overran the runway and end up taking a swim into the sea.

Okay, why don't we compare the shot to other SIN photos:

If that FX MD-11 didn't touch down on 02L yet, then these 20R landing shots must be fake  Insane :

Je89_w has it right I believe. This guy is landing Rwy 02L. Since he is passing the W5 taxiway, he is about 2/3 of the way down the runway (thanks to my trusty JeppView). No way he could plant it and stop in time. I do agree that the flaps seem to be a little more than the 15° or so used for takeoff, but this guy would have made the news had it been a landing.

I'm a Singapore spotter and I would back the statement that if he's landing, he would have overrun the runway. No way he can be landing. He's got to be taking off. However why with so much flaps ask the pilots... probably an intersection departure hence more flaps than usual.

My guess is takeoff, for only one reason, that looks like a high speed turnoff in the foreground......who puts a high speed taxiway at the beginning of a runway?

Well, here's a screenshot of my Jeppesen chart for SIN.

Since he's using 02L and passing W5 taxiway, I would say there's no chance that he's attempting a landing, he's just too far down the runway. My educated guess is a takeoff.

Phil

Taking off... People who've been to SIN will know this is a take-off. Flaps down or up, it doesn't matter... He simply can NOT be landing as there isn't enough runway left. Many posts above proved that.
Funny that people who've never been to SIN don't believe what is said above and still stick to thinking it's landing...

Landing. By the flap extention and the sign on the runway.

By the flap extention and the sign on the runway

How does the sign show it landing? We've proven that there is not enough runway by using that sign.

I would say it is landing. However, the tricky part is it doesn't look like the pilot had a flap 30 but more of like 25 (if it availble on the MD11). And the way it's positioned. He must've pulled the yoke up to the point that it made the MD11's noise looks like too high IMO. But he is landing.

you guys can compare It to this landing Korean.

Just a thought. That runway is 13,000+ ft. W5 appears to be the halfway (6500 ft) point. Plenty of room to bring an MD-11 to a stop, especially on a dry surface. According to the Jep airport map the east cargo area is closest to 20R approch end of the runway. Could it be that the MD-11 is landing long so there won't be a long taxi to the cargo ramp?

My first thought before reading the above posts was that he was departing due to the location of the high-speed turnoff in the foreground. That is still my guess.

Could it be that the MD-11 is landing long so there won't be a long taxi to the cargo ramp?

While that might work sometimes, this would be an extreme case to the point of stupidity. The "normal" thing to do would be to land a little long (ie maybe 2000'-3000' down) then roll w/o reverse thrust or brakes until it was necessary. There is no point to eat up that much runway while in the air, especially if something is going to go wrong on the rollout like no brakes, blown tire, etc.

I still want to try and take a shot at it. The first one to me is a landing, it just seems like he flared to high, and might land a little hard. The second seems like a take-off since the wings are flexing the way they are. Of course I could be wrong.

A DC-10 with MD-11 avionics is a MD-10...

This is a takeoff....landing flaps is even greater than this setting, not to mention wayyyy too far upthe runway.

If he's landing the flaps are in the wrong position. The MD lemon lands with 50 degrees of flaps.... ( all the way down ) I would say he's taking off.

For those who said this was a landing and that it couldn't be a take-off, because of the atittude of the AOA (angle of attack), you probably never heard of a double rotation? When a stretched fuselage rotates you first rotate to a certain pitch, then as the aircraft climbs away into the air a 50-75 feet or so the pilots put it into it's second rotation. This MD-11 could have been taking-off as easily as the go around that it is doing.

Okay, the answer... he's taking off... N604FE was doing touch and goes at Changi at maintenance work, and being lightly loaded, the moment he pulled his nose up he began to float into the sky.

Tzewei ... since when did I tell u it was a go-around?  Smile
