HAL Looking For 3 767s From SAS

Tried a search to see if this was already posted and found that it was not. Before I get trampled by others about REPOSTING!!!!

Anyway here goes. Just read an article from the Honolulu Star Bulletin about HA looking to get 3 767s from SAS and confirming that their CEO Josh G. is NOT looking to replace the 717s with MD80s anymore.

I wonder if they will be replacing the 717s at all. Looks like if things don't work out with Boeing by March 15 that they will take back the 3 767s.

Any thoughts?

I was looking at the HA website and they have 3 different seating arrangements on the 763s. Is this because they come from 3 different sources?

I have a feeling that HA will lease these 3 Boeing 767s and returns some of the 767s from Boeing. I think HA also consider looking into the A330s and A300-600s as other viable options. As for the 717s, I think they should return them to Boeing. The F100s that AA wants to retire would be a good replacement option.

Luv767s,

Yes, Hawaiian's fleet of 767's come from 3 different sources. The first 3 delivered to HAL came from Boeing. The next 4 came from International Lease Financial Corp and came to us from LTU airlines. The next 7 came from Ansett and are brand new planes, as are the first 3.
This past week, groups of HAL employees were sent to Shannon, Ireland, Vienna, Austria, and Milan, Italy to look at airplanes. We haven't been told what that's all about and I was surprised to read it in the paper today. Not sure if it's to replace the 3 aircraft we lease from Boeing or to expand our fleet for the rumoured upcoming expansion to markets in the US East Coast and Asia. Time will tell.

Aloha

Luv767s,

you said that the HA website lists three different configs. for their 767s....I only see it listed once. www.hawaiianair.com, under seat maps. I thought all of their 767 a/c were the same. What gives?

Actually, the first three 767s (580, 581, 582) are leased from Ansett; they were delivered brand new. The next four (583, 584, 585, 586) are indeed ex-LTU aircraft from ILFC. The final 7 (originally to be 9 but HA refused delivery of the last two) were delivered brand new; 3 are leased from Boeing and the rest leased from Ansett.

David,
Thanks for correcting me! I wasn't quite sure about the first 3 and last 7 but definitely knew all about the middle 4. Smile

HNLFlyboy,

you're right, the info is not in the seatmap section, but in the corporate info section. check this out:

Luv767s,

thanks for the clarification. I went and took a look at it. I wonder why they only show one seat map? I am sure that when you book on-line and go to make your seat selection that the res. system knows what a/c seat map to pull up, since it would have to know this in order to know how many seats are still available to sell....although I know that HA is infamous for changing a/c. That would be a nightmare for a full flight...sold 264+ seats (due to overbooking) and a/c shows up at gate to operate flight and is only config. for 252. Yikes! Oh well....c'est la vie.

HFB,
Actually the configurations of our aircraft do not vary too greatly. 7 of our planes have 6 cabin doors, and 7 of our planes only have 4 cabin doors. The planes with less cabin doors have more seats and these seats are not assigned until departure time and cannot be reserved in advance in case of aircraft change.
3 of our planes have 234 seats, 2 of our planes have 241 seats, 2 of our planes have 244 seats and 7 have 246 seats.

I have a feeling that HA will lease these 3 Boeing 767s and returns some of the 767s from Boeing.

Actually I doubt we'd be returning any of the Boeing 767's. Boeing is too big a creditor in the bankruptcy process, and at this point they hold the upper hand in the negotiations for getting us out. The bankruptcy judge allowed us to reject the leases on the two undelivered planes, but i don't see any reason why he would allow us to return the three we currently lease from Boeing.

We did return three (or two?) 717's, but that was because of the reduction in interisland flying, and was also agreed to by Boeing and the bankruptcy judge. Right now we have the highest load factor in the US, and I don't see the judge agreeing to any reason for returning the Boeing 767's.

So in the end, my guess is that the ex-SAS planes (or whoever they were) are for new flying. Of course I may be a little biased that way since it would mean I'd be getting back to work sooner too.

Kind of off topic, but the HA route map says they don't have nonstop service from Kahului to LA anymore?

AirVB: Correct, or from Kahului to SFO and SAN, for that matter!

Much has been said about HA's inability (rather, unwillingness) to maintain their Kahului-mainland network. I suppose the addition of 3 more 767s could solve some of those problems.

MX just got one B767-300 from SAS on a three year leasing contract with very cheap monthly payments. I can see HA getting a similar deal that would allow them to operate the aircraft more profitable than the current ones in their fleet. After all, lower leases mean less fixed costs...

The only major restriction of MX leasing contract for the B763 is that they can not change the configuration of the aircraft. I know that MX is interested in two more B763's from SK to start European operations.
