MAS To Replace 35 B 737 Classics

Wed Feb 25, 2004 3:24 pm

From : justplanes.com

Is considering replacing 35 Boeing 737s which have been in service for around 10 years.

Malaysia Airlines will decide within 3 months whether to replace these aircraft and if it does so it will choose between the Boeing 737-800/900 and Airbus A320.

**Hmm...I think that B 738s will be ordered and not A 320s!!!

This makes no sense. The Malaysian 734 fleet is young. It does not need replacing wth more expensive 738/320 equipment. There is no reason the 734 fleet cannot fly efficiently for another 10 years.

With Air Asia providing LCC competition, MAS should defer any 734 replacement plan until the market dynamics are clearer.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

Well, I don't think it is "new" that MAS would like to replace their 737-400 in the future ...

We have already seen lots of speculations around here, so better wait till the official press release.

Good day,

It's about time they decided on this issue. Well, I reckon that they don't have to replace all at once. They could especially replace the older ones. And yeah, B737-800s are the best way to go, no offence to A320s. I prefer the B738s, although I have only been on Virgin Blue's B737-700s. Heaps comfortable and the flying was smooth and just plain comfortable. I really hope for the good news within these 3 months.

RE: MAS A330
Where did you hear about the ERJ? I didn't read it anywhere. Probably it was to replace the Twin Otter's and Fokker 50s. However, a better replacements would be Bombardier's Dash 8Qs.

Cheers!

Kind regards,
Benjamin

Well, with jet fuel costs so volatile, newer equipment will mean better fuel effeciency so its a good long term investment.

As a F50 and B737-400 replacement the A32X, B737NG and Embraer 170/195 were rumoured in t´he past. For the DHC-6 MAS doesn´t see a suitable replacement, even though IMO the 328JET or even Do 228-200 are quite good for these missions.

It's not like the 734 is hugely inefficient itself.

Rumours flew around in the past.

At one time MAS was considering ERJ-145 Amazons as Fokker 50 replacements. Later on MAS played around the idea of replacing both the F50s and 737s with a common aircraft. The Bombardier Dash 8-400 was considered!

In the late 90s up to 63 737NG/A32X were considered. Airbus was then on the lead. In my opinion I think MAS will eventually get the 737-800/900s. With the opening of Boeing's regional office in Kuala Lumpur a couple of years back, this is perhaps a symbolic gesture to MH/AK. Partnership for the future.

Engineering-wise MAS has an excellent 737 facility with accolades from Boeing in the past - perhaps they should build and strengthen on this and opt for the 737NGs - although my last few A32X trips have made me sway towards the 'Bus' as it just seems roomier and quieter.

But of course, I am not buying the planes.  Smile

Presumably, it would also be a lot simpler for MAS to switch to the NGs than re-train for the Airbus.

MAS DOES NOT deserve to get new a/c unless they change their dull c/s...United has...now it's MH's turn...
Now you're really flying

Eih, Greaser, that's a joke, or not?
They don't deserve to get new aircraft as long as they dont have new color scheme?
Sounds cool. So Boeing wouldn't sell planes to MAS cause they dont deserve new planes cause you dont like their colors? lol

Boeing says: It's time for a new color scheme or we won't sell aircrafts to MAS!

If Airbus provides better deal than Boeing, which in many occasions they do, then they might be tempted to go for Airbus. If this rumor is true, then I am sure Airbus has already started looking into this.
