BA Concorde used to be Flt 001 LHR-JFK, call sign = Speedbird 1

PanAm Flt #1 operated as a Round the World flight...I am sure someone can give the routing of this flight.

Some airlines don't have flight 001.

For example, Avianca.

They do have flight AV002 though, BAQ-MIA (Barranquilla-Miami).

I remember as a kid, hoping on Pan Am's Flight 1 "Around the World" flight out of Honolulu. It was neat to hear the flight attendants announce the routing, and to hear them all speaking their native tongue. Of course, I always got off on the first stop ... HNL-LAX.

Interesting you should mention that.
You are correct. I peeked in my flite guide and there was flight one,big as day.
This ruins a myth. The myth is when a plane crashes, the airline scrubs the flight number. In most cases yes, but with AA flight one, no.
Mar 1st 1962, AA flight one, a 707, took off in the morning from JFK, NS to LAX on 31 L,went into its noise abatement left turn rolled over on its back and went into Jamaica Bay killing 95, I believe was the count.
Flight one of American is still there, a morning trip JFK-LAX. Interesting.....

Qantas Airways
Qantas operates more than one flights daily on its kangaroos routes. The oldest and longest routes would be QF001 SYD-BKK-LHR.

If memory serves me, TW 1 was STL-HNL and 2 was HNL-STL. It been a while, it could be the other way around, but i believe it is correct.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

SHUPirate1, when was this changed, towards the end? I know that STL-HNL was TW1 for years. Was tw1 a contiuation of LGa-stl and on to Hnl?

That's interesting. UA's #1 flight is to HNL, and QF's #3 is to HNL. Is there some sort of pattern or system, or is it just coincidence? Why is HNL so high on the lists?

Cheers,

In the last few years, the first part was definitely LGA-STL...and it may have been LGA-STL-HNL, I honestly don't remember...I just remember seeing flight 1 being LGA-STL (I fly out of LGA all the time, so I'd remember that part)

It certainly was TW1 STL-HNL, LGA-STL could very well been the first part of that flight. AA contiued to run the STL-HNL until november.  Smile

I would say it's just a coincidence.

Though it is a bit upsetting to see United give its ORD-HNL flight the UA001 designator, it does seem to make sense. The fact is, Hawaii is one of United's most important markets. If you've ever read United's book, The Age of Flight, the writers often reference the fact that United and Hawaii have always had something of a symbiotic relationship, with United bringing the tourists, and Hawaii providing "benefits" to United for doing so.

Therefore, seeing the placement of UA001/UA002 on a service between United's homebase, and one of its most important markets, kinda makes sense.

ThaiAggie-

Yeah, NW1 used to continue on to BKK from NRT. I wasn't even aware that they had changed it until I read this post... it had been that way for years.

This post comes up every few months... a search should yield some lengthy threads on the flight 1s of more obscure carriers.

Cathay 1 is a Boeing 747 freighter routing Hong Kong - Manchester, via Brussels.

10-15 years ago it was possible (though unlikely, of course) to have four "Flight 1"s all on the same ATC freq at the same time. Maybe someone can guess which ones.

Since PA odd number flights were Westbound,
PA1 would have been SFO-NRT-BKK-DEL-THR-FRA-LHR-JFK.
PA2 was JFK-LHR-FRA-THR-DEL-BKK-NRT-SFO

UnitedFirst,

I am only too glad to see UA return the ORD-HNL route and giving it the flight designation that it did. The relationship between the carrier and the state does go way back. I am not sure how many pax a year UA brings into the Islands totally, but I can tell you that 1 out of every 3 jobs in the state is directly or indirectly related to tourism, myself being one of the 1's. Anytime I hear of a carrier adding another flight or route into the state is a time of joy for me. It would seem only fair that UA give this route Flight 1 as it is from their hometown to our state capitol.

UnitedFirst,

Why is it "a bit upsetting" that UA gave ORD-HNL the Flight #1 designation? I'm just curious. Traditionally, ORD-HNL was Flight #1 before it became the round-the-world 744 service, so doesn't it make sense that UA would revert to the old designator?
