One Of SriLankan's 332 AOG - MH774 Iso!

Tue Mar 02, 2004 5:21 pm

One of SriLankan Airlines 332 seems to be AOG and due to that, UL is looking for a replacement. It looks like a MH744 might operate several flights to UL into ZRH/FRA, CDG, BKK/HKG and UL / WMKK), Malaysia">KUL/SIN.

Exact dates/timings will follow.

You mean MH is operating a B744 for them in the mean time?

Thats interesting. Couldn't they have got a MAS A330 to operate instead of a B747-400.? Swissgabe, any idea of what the rego of the A330 in question is? Also, what does AOG stand for?  Smile

Zizou, I don't know the registration yet but I can provide you this later ...

I don't think MAS has spare 332 at the moment but plenty of 744 they are happy to (wet)-lease off, even for a short period.

It would be nice to see UL 'operating' the 747. I would love to see photos of the MH 744 in CMB.

Gabe, you going to Bangladesh soon? I may be there in two weeks time.

I wonder what happened. Those a332's are brand new from the factory.

It would be odd seeing UL in a Boeing plane. The last time they had a B747 was back in 1987.

I don't think that I will make it to Bangladesh within the next year ... maybe to Sri Lanka soon ...
MH744 in CMB would be great, I would love to fly MH from ZRH to CMB!

YYZ4RADD, doesn't matter if the birds come brand new from the factory. things like that can happen all the time, might be something technical ....
Indeed, I would have loved to go on AirLankas 742!

And on a kinda related Topic
Srilankan is to increase their frequency to KL to uptp 14 per week. Is their so much traffic between CMB and KL?

well, I just know ...  Big grin

yes, right, there are plans to go double daily into KUL and SIN. During the last 10 month, there has been an average LF or around 80% on this sector.

Also Australia is on the talk again and PEK seems to be confirmed for NOV.

MH's B777 and A330s are on high utilization now, esp their A333s. Those leased A332s are not that "free" but neither are they extremely busy. They do have some lengthy layovers but it is understandable since they are now used to operate long hauls... Sometimes they are deployed to domestic during longer layovers.

But it is not entirely true that MH's B744s are in excess... They certainly need them but they do have spare aircraft available. They operate a rather flexible schedule. That's why some of them do charters...

Just an update on the finer details...

The Aircraft leased from MH is 9M-MPO 744.

Any spotters in ZUR can catch it there today as it is going the CMB-ZUR-CMB run today.

From what I have heard the upper deck is not being used as the J class seats are adequate on the lower deck. Anyone know haw many economy class seats are there on the MH744's?

It’s a shame in my opinion to have all the spare capacity on the 744 when the booking were all made on the A330.

Maybe we might see it at LHR in the near future - although no plans at the moment, it is a possibility if it goes on for some time.

I am trying to find out the reg of the 332 AOG. My guess is it could be ALB?.

Srilankan_340, regarding the space capacity:
UL's ZRH and FRA flights are combined and the flight goes CMB-ZRH-FRA-CMB as above-mentioned.

Thanks Swissgabe,

I was under the impression only the Wednesday flight was combined ZRH & FRA and the other days were seperate flights operated to FRA & ZUR. Maybe I am wrong.

as per the winter schedule, there are no more scheduled combination flights between ZRH/FRA at all. It has been done on a ad-hoc basis only due to the large capacity with the 744 compared to the 332.

Is the plane is UL colours or MH Colours. It would be nice to see a 744 in UL colours.

How long is this lease for? Until they get the a332 fixed I guess.

What happened to the story about UL getting more a332 and a343 / a346 for their fleet. I read somewhere Peter Hill (CEO UL), saying that their long term plan was to buy on average one large plane (eg. a332/a343/a346) every month for the next two years to increase the fleet. Also they were looking to replace the current a343 fleet with new a346's and maybe a a345 or two help out with North American destinations apparently.

Anyways their management agreement with UL is being renewed in 2008 according to the contract. From what I have read it is being renewed and also the Sri Lankan government will sell their share in UL (to who, not known yet).

I dont know whether this is true or not? Can anybody fill me in?

I am pretty sure this is a rather short term lease and if so there is no point in repainting, at most adding titles of which is not really necessary at all if it's just an interim solution until the AOG gets fixed. Is it something big requiring such long down time? Or going through a mx check?

Surprised they leased 9M-MPO out. Should have given them 9M-MPA Big grin while we keep newer ones with better IFE haha.  Nuts

Actually 9M-MPO was delivered to MH in december 2001. Its the newest 744 in their fleet. I am surprised it was leased to UL. Quite surprising.

I wonder how UL is handling the pilots since I dont think at present they dont have 744 pilots. It must be interesting. It is nice to see UL have a 744.

They would have airbus, but as most know its not easy getting airbus planes on lease forget about buying them. Too much demand less capacity I guess.

I guess 9M-MPA is on the top of MH “waiting list” for major cabin/product revamp.

Actually 9M-MPQ is the latest in the fleet.

I guess UL is wet-leasing the 744 rather than dry leasing. Complete with pilots and crew.

Off topic: Looks like MAS is finally giving their earlier batch of 744s a good cleaning and new coat paint. Notice how shiny and clean is 9M-MPB. Even the engine cowlings looks brand new.  Smile

The A330 is AOG due to a main gear retration actuator found cracked

Aircraft sustained damage during landing and will require a gear change..

Yes 9M-MPO is not the newest.

Babaero, any idea what causes this? Fault of the manufacturer or the maintenance by UL?
