How Many Cockpits Have You Visited?

Wed Mar 10, 2004 4:26 am

Post 9/11, most airlines would probably ban this opportunity, but before Sept. 11, I had the priviledge of visiting 2 cockpits in flight. An AC DC-9 and 767-200. I also caught a glimpse of an A320 cockpit.

Some airlines may still allow visiting cockpits. Has anyone else visited a cockpit in flight and how many?

Yea in an Airtours MD-83 somewhere over Kent about 12 years ago, and then in may 2001 on a bmi A321 coming back from Greece. The cockpit door was jammed open for the whole flight so i got a good view while queuing for the loo. Wasn't actually in it though!

AA 767-300 ZHR-DFW, but just because I was in business class. Have asked several times to visit the cockpit while in economy and was always denied due to "security concerns". Biz class pax don't pose a security problem I suppose.

Had jumpseats in plenty SAA cockpits on flights when I was working on a project in Cape Town and Sun Air went bust in 1999, SAA picked up the slack and non-rev was impossible! Travelled back and forth from JNB on 732, A320, A300, 747SP, also flown in a 738 cockpit last year and visited 346 flight deck in December. Other airlines cockpits visited include SR MD-11 and DL L-1011.

I went visit with the cockpit after 9/11 and that was no problems with me at all. My flight attendant was let me visit into the cockpit on the New B739 to IAH from 2 years ago and it was great.

Hello,

first of all I would highly appreciate if the possibility of jumpseatrides would reutrn soon. The policy of banning cockpit visits or even jumpseat rides does not increase safety at all. As far as I know, United had secured cockpit doors even before 9/11, and you all know the rest of the story.
But back to the toppic. I had the chance to visit cockpits on many occasions before 9/11. And I had the plaeasure to jumpseat many plane types before 9/11. Regarding jumpseats the smallest was a Saab 340 and the largest a landing in a 747-400 in FRA. Most often I had the chance to jumpseat on 737s of nearly all types. Most fun was an automatic landing in a 737-800 in fog. Unfortunatly that was also my last ride :-(

Best regards

The last time I went into a cockpit during flight was in July 2001 on a BA B747-200 from LHR-CAI. I was allowed into the cockpit during cruise, but didn't get too much of a view because it was a night flight. Before I left I asked if I can come back for the landing, and they said that would be no problem so I went back to my seat which was on the upper deck (BA had economy seats on the upper deck of 742s). Anyway soon after decent began the flight engineer came out of the cockpit and signaled me to come in. I sat in the jump seat behind the captain and on the left of the flight engineer. It was so amazing because the view as we crossed Alexandria and down to Cairo was amazing as you can see all these lights of individual towns and cities. At one point we were flying for 5 minutes, literally a couple of metres under this thin 'sheet' of clouds which was pretty cool. As we began our decent the pilot and co-pilot kept on pointing out to famous landmarks in Cairo (even though it was dark and all you can see was the city lights, but they said they had been flying the route for over 10 years so they knew where everything was). When the airport came to view, it was a bit weird since you can see the entire runway length but not the airport terminals or the surrounding area. When we finally landed it was really interesting to see that it needed all three crew (captain, co-pilot and engineer) to operate the thrust reversers. We then slowly began to taxing to the runway and the third engine was switched off (I was told by the engineer the 3rd engine does not have a brake related system so is turned off as well as to increase safety for ground staff). At the gate we finally came to a halt when this big STOP sign was inches away from the cockpit window.

It was an excellent experience, and surreal at times. My special thanks have to go to the engineer thoough, as he kept explaining to me what the pilots were doing, which helped me understand what was happening better.

With the changes in aviation laws since then, I've only been able to enter the cockpit after the aircraft was landed and stopped. These have included Easyjet 737-300 and 737-700 (numerous times), Egyptair B777-200, BMI A321 and A320, Britannia 757 and Monarch 757.

I have had the opportunity to fly jumpseat on the AS332 Super Puma, The Sikorsky S-61 amd the Saab 340, The rotary wing experiences were for the complete flight i.e take off-flight-landing, the fixed wing was for landing quite an experience !!.

My last cockpit visit was when I on a UA 777 (N776UA) at LHR (before push back) in November 2003. I was in there fore 15 mins chatting with the flight crew. Was an enjoyable experience to say the least.

I always find United's cockpit crews very friendly  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Thanks

Hello!

Not that many... I flew Sydney to Coffs Harbour to Sydney to Canberra to Sydney with a pilot friend of mine on an Eastern Australia Dash-8 in 1993.

Other than that, I visited the cockpit of a United 757 in Boston before we took off for LAX. The pilots had their feet up on the dash  Smile

Well only dont one in my life and was not in flight. It was because i was a minor flying alone so they let me in first and i talked to the Captain for a little while about how i want his job. When i fly i am with Groups of poeple or my famliy so i never have time to visit after the flight but once i start flying alone i will have a nice chat with the pilots after landing if they have time that would be great!

My logbook always gets me in, and autographs are always on order! Then you can sneak in a picture or two and back in the day, sit in the captains seat and touch the machine gun button on the yoke(but only at gate there)!
The classic cockpits are the bomb!

I've been in a few cockpits while the plane was on the ground, including a 767, A32*, (I can't remember exactly which one) and 717. I've also been in some little planes (i.e. DHC-6, Beech 1900) where I could see out the front because there were no cockpit doors.

But the only time I've been to the flight deck in flight was on an AC 767 when I was 12 (pre 9-11). It was a very nice day, and we could see the wide expanse of central Canada stretched out in front of us. The pilots also showed us the weather radar, (we could hear it moving back and forth in the radome) and they pointed at a patch of red on the radar screen and then pointed out the window at the actual thunderstorm in the distance. It wasn't as good as jumpseating, but so far it's the only time I've been up to the front office of a jet in flight.

B757
B767-200
B767-300/ER

All on Delta...it's no mistake that I made sure to check out the flightdecks on all the planes I've been on...you learn alot of good knowledge every time you go up!

I'm waiting for my dad to get back on the line on the 732, then he can bid a ferry/mx/repositioning trip, which isn't part 135 (I believe it's 135 for an pax hop at least)...then I'd be allowed the jumpseat, as it'd only be him, the Capt, and myself  Big thumbs up Dad pleeeease!

Since my dad's a pilot he's taken me on several cockpit visits. About 3 times on 727-200s, a few on 737-300s, once on a 737-800, and once on an MD-80. My last visit was about 2 years ago, post 9-11. Need to go again... Insane

Plenty. After I was 8, I decided to make it my quest on every flight.

McDonell Douglas MD 81/82/83/87
DC8-51/63
DC9-15/30/50
DC-10-10/15/30
MD-11
Boeing 707-387C
727-100/200
737-200/300/400/800/900
747-287C/300
747-SP21
757-200
767-200/300
777-200
Airbus A-300
A-310
A-320
A340
Embraer RJ-145
Beechcraft 1900D
Rockwell Sabreliner 40A
Learjet 30
G-V

And I also have been fortunate to fly two entire flights on a 737-200 and on a 737-400. Plus, an approach and landing on 747-200

A hint, pilots are usually friendly, but, it helps if: 1) you are flying in one of the premium classes, and 2) you are a fan of any FlighSim. The more you keep them talking, the more chance you might get invited to occupy the jumpseat for the landing.

I've visited a few cockpits, but I'm just going to put here the ones that I had the chance to see during the flights:

CS-TBO - B727-100 - TAP - LIS/PDL
CS-TEP - B737-200 - TAP - PDL/LIS
HB-INI - DC-9-81 - SR - LIS/GVA/ZRH
HB-IPD - A310-200 - SR - ZRH/LIS
I-DAVK - MD83 - AZ - LIN/LIS

These are my ones!
regards

In-flight:

B757-200 - KEF/MCO:
Got to sit in the jumpseat from mid-flight onwards, all the way through the landing. A wonderful experience, but not as great as

B757-200 - MCO/KEF: (It was a good trip  Big grin)
Jumpseat for around 2 hours, landing in KEF was a once in a lifetime experience, coming in from the south the sun was about to rise so there was a small amount of light on the horizon, only enough to make out the outlines of the rugged landscape, until all of a sudden we saw the runway. Quite special and quite uncapturable un film.

B737-400 - KEF/CPH:
Great ride and an odd approach. Great views!

All of these were around 1995-1997. Hopefully not my only in-flight experiences.

The first time I visited a cockpit was on the Vickers Viscount which was used a as part of a kids play park at Saltwell Park, Gateshead, Tyne and Wear. You used to get on using stairs at the front and it was fully equipped inside. After you finised playing inside you would leave by the chute on the rear right side.

18/12/93 G-UKHP a Bae 146-300 of Air UK, on the ground at LBA.

28/03/00 G-IGOF a B737-300 of Go Fly, somewhere over France.

16/11/00 G-OOAR an A320 of Air 2000, over the channel at night with a fantastic view of Southampton.

I get to go in and out of the flight deck of Boeing 737-300's and 700's all the time. always very impressive.

I've never visited a cockpit in flight but have visited them several times after the flight has arrived.
Off the top of my head:
SWA 737
CO Express ERJ-145
US AIRWAYS:
A320
A321
737
757
UNITED 757
American MD80

I'm sure I visited more when I was a kid but can't remember them.

I "hammed it up" with C3 pilots over the North Atlantic in a 757 for 45 minutes. They were bugging me about thinking I was gay and going to Paris alone. C3 over the prairies-co-pilot was talking to JAL 747 beside us. Also AF 313 over North Atlantic with very friendly crew.
