DL757 W/out Overhead Airjets?

Wed Mar 10, 2004 9:14 am

I was on DL351 (atl-phx on 3/9) today which was a 757.

Wasn't able to get the tail # or ship #, however.

I've been on quite a few DL 757s, but this one was different :

No airjets in the overhead panels. Just lights. Strange?

Also, there wasn't a lavatory forward of the 2L/2R doors behind first class.

There were *three* of 'em at the rear, however.

Anyone know anything about this plane and why it's different from DL's other 757s?

thanks

I've never been on a 757 like that, however I have been on a L1011 with out overhead Air Jets. And it was hotter that blazes!  Big grin

I've been on a couple of AA 767-300's that are like that (maybe all of them are). My best guess is that you were on an ex ATA 757??

I've been on quite a few of DL planes that don't have overhead adjustable air vents. Most noticeably on Song 757's. Must have something to do with saving $$$$$

Thats strange, never been on a narrowbody without air vents. Even Delta 763's have air, but their L1011's didnt. Neither does the DC-10.

You were probably on N900PC a 757-26D originally built for Shanghai Airlines. DL aquired it after Shanghai didn't take delivery(not sure why). If it wasn't that one there are 4 757-212s(ex-Singapore and ATA) flying around. All the others are -232s.

I never heard of a plane having no overhead air jets. I use them all the time. I feel the need for extra air and they cool me off. That would suck if there wedre no overhead air jets.

Most of the Germania 737-300s DL got have no overhead air vents. I thought it was very strange when they first arrived!

I was on a Morris 737 one time without overhead airjets. It was a little less comfortable, but not a huge deal...

None of SAA's 747SPs had overhead air jets and the 346s don't have them either.

Anyone know the history behind DL purchasing ex-ATA aircraft? This seems opposite the direction one would expect in the used aircraft market.

Funny you all should mention N900PC. It is the only Delta 757 I have a picture of (Just the tail and aft section). See... here it is:

Never been on it though. I know for a fact though that N752AT has no overhead air vents. Been on that one once.

CO doesn't have airjets on their 762s or 772s.

Airlines can order all kinds of options on their aircraft. The 757 you flew was probably an ex-ATA bird; DL bought several when they started service to some of the Latin destinations because ATA's 757's are configured for high altitude operations (extra oxygen) while apparently DL's are not. Not sure what all of the differences are, but I have never seen a DL 757 fly to Hawaii although AA and UA use their 757's to Hawaii.

I was on a DL L1011-500 from PDX-SEL-TPE back in '89 or so and the safety video said that the seat cushion could be used for flotation. The flight attendant came on after the video to state that the seat cushions on this aircraft could not be used for flotation and later told me that the aircraft we were on was an ex-UA, ex-PA L10 and it was ordered w/o floatable seat cushions. It also did not have individual airvents.

I have noticed that the video screen at the front of DL's 757's are electrically powered while I have seen AA's flight attendants manually raising and lowering the front unit. Apparently that is an option also.

You shouldnt be using the air from these anyways.... Do you really want to smell the guy who farted in the back of the plane or inhale the kids sneeze from the back of the plane? Those vents are some of the easiest ways to get sick while airborne!!!

Licking the floor of the lavatory is a pretty easy way too.

This configuration also has extendible footrests in first class. I was on this bird or similar last weekend flying MEX-ATL.

I've been on a British Airways 757 that didn't have these air vents either. Though it was rather strange, as they (vents) seem so common place.

I am not sure about the DL757 but I remember when I flew a Hawaiian (HA? still working on the abrevs) DC-10 from SEA to HNL there were no air vents either. From what a gathered from asking people and researching stuff it was because the DC-10 has a central air ventilation system that means you don't need the vents for everyone.

Gasper fans and vents are a customer option, some airlines choose not to have them.

Here at Qantas there are seven leased Boeing 767-300s, the only aircraft in the mainline fleet not to have gasper fans. They are leased from British Airways, who did not select the option.

The BA Boeing 747-436 that Qantas leased several years ago was also without gasper fans.

Delta and many carriers lease or purchase second hand aircraft that would have been delivered to a customer who did not specify gasper fans in their order.

I hope that's some background for you.

I have never been on a widebody that had gasper vents. AA's 767, US's 333s, DL's L10s, AA's D10s and M11s... never seen a vent on a widebody.

Incidentally, that air is no dirtier that the air that is circulated through the main air system. And, it's also blown out the tail continuously... at a varying rate, but still... not all of it is recycled.
If you don't want germs or fart smells, then you had better stop breathing altogether. Then we have one fewer complainer, too!!!
Hahaha, just giving you a hard time.

Incidentally, the 717 and 777 use 100% fresh air- no recirculation.

NW 747's are widebodies and all have gasper valve "air jets". None of the DC10's have air vents. I am very sure the A330's have air vents. On older aircraft like the DC9/727 the air is 100% fresh air coming out the air vents. On newer more fuel efficient aircraft the air is recycled more to save fuel.

HP's 737s do not have "airjets".
