New York Air... with the black and silver titles. A great sense of style. Remember "the flying nosh" in those imitation Bloomies bags? Despite doing fairly well, Frank Lorenzo purchased them and merged them with Continental. I think it was a loss of great little airline!

Of course, I would love to see Pan Am clippers flying internationally again, but too many problems to fix, especially in today's environment.

I'd love to see Hughes Airwest back in the air with their "yellow birds"...I got to fly on them a lot when I was a kid. Flying from TUS to LAX, PHX, or SLC was a thrill for me, a 9 year old grandson of an Air Force pilot....one time I remember seeing Meteor Crater from one of those birds. Hughes Airwest sometimes had toys for us kids as well as paper model cutouts of their yellow birds. Those were wonderful times.

And I'd love to see PSA's smiling planes back as well as AirCal and Western. I got to fly those three carriers too....AirCal had good snack packs that I liked better than Hughes Airwest's meals, and I had a great flight with my grandparents and aunt (and future uncle!) from SLC-LAX-HNL aboard one of the Spaceship DC-10's just a year before Western was bought out.....and I got to fly PSA one time with my grandpa from SAN to SEA, we toured the Boeing factory and enjoyed it.

Oh, one other airline I'd enjoy having back, that I got to fly on when my dad took a job overseas, would be the original PAN AM. They were a touch of America I enjoyed seeing after living in a faraway land, at a very young age (preteen/early teens). I enjoyed flying on their 747SP's from JFK-Dhahran (especially the flight back to JFK).

Now I actually DID bring back Pan Am...well, on Efzed's Airline 5 anyway, and I ended up using 757's, 767's, and 777's to profitably bring back some of PA's old routes like JFK-LHR or LAX-NRT/LAX-AKL-SYD as well as make PA the leading carrier on the NYC-FLA routes.

For a REAL airlines - bring back Ansett Flying Boat Services!!!

Four radial engined Shorts S25 Sandringham flying boats, Sydney Water Airport (Rose Bay) to Lord Howe Island. Now that was an airline!

Arrival/departure times at Lord Howe were dictated by the tides & first/last light, which dictated SYD departure times. The one time I flew it we left SWA at 2:30am to arrive with first light at 5:30 am. MAGICAL!!!

Number one: Pan American, I grew up in NY, and they are as much a part of the city as anything, want them back and I want the Pan AM building to be the Pan Am builiding again

Number two: Swissair, I like Swiss and prefer the color scheme to that of Swiss, just need the reputation of Swissair to be back

I would gladly give up an air france to get one of the above back

Total hometown selfishness here, but I'd have to go with Lake Central Airlines.

Based in Indianapolis with service to most of the larger cities in the midwest, and some outside of the region, but best of all it served the little airports like Columbus, Richmond, Bedford, Bloomington and South Bend, Indiana.

In August of 1968 it was acquired by Allegheny.

Eastern Airlines is my choice!

MARKAIR flew throughout the 90s, based in ANC - but eventually could not
compete with Alaska Airlines and folded. RIP.

Oh for the love of god.

Please tell me that you would keep Neil Berght out of the management of a reformed Markair.

Markair did not fold because of competion from Alaska. They folded because they only got significant cash income during one time of the year, when they did their PFD specials. The rest of the year, they had no money to pay bills, and the interest on those bills. Also the people that bought those PFD trips, where taking longer trips then what the ticket price would cover. Markair also intentionally sold flights at a lost in an attempt to force it's competion out of the market.

Now I would bring back my fromer Employeer Reeve Aleutian Airways. But with some significant equipment and management philosophy changes.

I can't believe all the Eastern lovers on here. Perhaps the posters flew them as kids and everything seemed wonderful back then or maybe their folks worked for them?

Eastern had a poor service reputation with the traveling public and there was even a club called WHEAL which stood for We Hate Eastern Air Lines. National scooped Eastern with the first domestic jet service in the USA by leasing a couple of Pan Am 707's for the New York-Miami run while EA was operating prop-jet Electras and National also operated the first DC8's into Miami. Years later National was the first in Miami with 747's and operated a slew of gorgeous DC10's while Eastern was still waiting for L1011's to be delivered. National had much better marketing with promotions such as "No Frills Flights", "I'm Barbara, Fly Me!", and others. While Eastern had many great employees throughout the company, they were so big that guys working for them 30 years didn't know another guy who had been with them 30 years and this was on the same maintenance base at MIA. National was more family-like for the employees and it seemed like everyone knew everyone, at least on the same base or station.

And last but not least, Eastern's rampers at MIA were more like the Mafia than airline employees, with little control from management and a good number of them being busted for drug smuggling operations, especially after Eastern obtained Braniff's South American routes.

Well the majority of you have probably never even heard of this airline, and those who have may even be disgusted that they were even mentioned in the same thread as many of the classic airlines of yesterday, but for some reason, I really liked Reno Air. They were a small airline who served just the west coast of the United States and surely nothing special I'm sure, but I just liked them for some reason. I flew them once when I was younger and enjoyed every minute of it. But I think most of all I just liked their fleet which consisted of only MD-80/90's. I really thought the livery looked nice on these planes.

I was so mad when AA bought them out back in 1999 and I began seeing the transformation into the AA colors. They were always easy to spot after the merge as they left the fuselage white. But what makes me even more unhappy is how fast they dumped the "ex-Reno Air" planes and replaced them with more 757s. (I think)

Hi American757 ... to really tell what happened to Ansett would take more time and space than we have here. Basically, the main problem was that at exactly the time that AN needed a large injection of capital for new fleet, Air NZ which already had owned 50% of the thing, prevented SQ from buying the other 50% owned by Murdoch's New Ltd, and bought it instead. In short, it is what happens when a dog actually catches the car it is chasing... i.e. it can't really do anything with it! So, starved of both funds and experienced management (as all the good management people left - or were fired - in droves), the airline went into a downward spiral.

Added to that were other older problems such as a very diverse and ageing fleet, labour practices and perks from the stone age, and costs even double that of Qantas at the time, itself an industrial-relations dinosaur.

Finally, 9/11 brought forward a decision by the ANZ board that in other circumstances would only have been weeks away anyway

Yea, BRING BACK ANSETT

Australia needs another full price airline than another dodgy low cost carrier. Australia should have Qantas, Ansett and Virgin Blue, that is all, you do not need anything else.

L-188-

First of all, let me commend you on being on top of your game on aviation interests in AK..

I just wanted to express my biased opinion on markair...they obviously did not fold because of competition from AS, but because of crappy management..Any one of us from airliners.net could have told us that!

I've always liked markair though. Its nice to meet someone who is properly educated in the ways of AK aviation! Sorry it took so long to respond!

So anyways, we both know the truth on markair, but I still flew on them frequently anyhow....good day to you sir!

L-188, sorry for my initial sarcasm..

You can't tell me that AS had no factor in Markair's downfall.

The truth of the matter is that they initially focused on directly competing with AS within the state. When that didn't work out, they expanded to the lower 48 to attempt to take routes from AS (ANC-SEA-pretty much anywhere, ring a bell?)

That didnt work out, wonder why?
