Best Airline Website

Thu Mar 11, 2004 5:42 am

I don't know if this has been discussed before, but what Airline's website do you think is the best?

I despise my home airline's website (Air Canada). Its always SLOW! They revamped it a while back but still not that great.

Another website that I must say is quite poor is United's. They have minimal info about the airline on it.

Maybe it's a Star Alliance requirement to have a poor website  Smile

Although I don't use it much, I always here AA's website is great. They're always updating it and continually winning awards for it.

Hmm, depends on how you define best.

Best as far as ease of use? WN hands down is the easiest. It is SO easy to play around with flights and change dates. The site is always fast, loads quickly and never freezes up. Granted, there is no seat selection to slow down the ticketing process. But overall you can check schedules and book a flight in minutes. B6 comes in second for ease of use.

Best as far entertainment/information value? No site jumps out at me as being the BEST. I do like the Lufthansa and Qantas sites.

Best Overall? Lets see what the forum has to say on that......

Iran Air has a good website, though it's sad about the state of the airline with all that 'wasted' potential.

Try Emirates' web site: www.emirates.com

They provide the site in others languages such as French, Chinese, Russian, German, Italian and Japanese. (I wonder why not Arabic  Confused)

You can find there every sort of information you want, like schedules; Timetable; flight status; Dubai city and airport map, help and information; countries' characteristcs to where Emirates flies; news; VISA arrangements; on board menus; inflight entertainment; fleet etc...

As for their home page livery layout quality, btween 0-10, I classify them 8,5

qantus have got a really cool route map. the map has all the cities served and when you click on an airport the routes from the city fly out to there destinations. it means you can make out were the heck the lines are going

Egyptair's website has an Ancient Egyptian theme to it which makes it look more original than others. Its basic but provides you with most of the information you need:

Horus,
congratulations for sharing your name with the business class program. I was surprised to see you still have smoking on board permitted. Besides that the website looks clear, but messy, check out the pictures of the planes for instance.

I'd just like to add the sober site of BA. They have a good booking engine, which makes the necessary stuff on the site worthwhile. Even just campaigned in brussels and amsterdam for the site. Of course it is good to have destinations etc, but it has to be accesible to the masses who just want to check out flights & prices. Secondly i think sites should have proper corporate info available, including of course the fleet and inflight products. Think KLM still has some cleaning up to do on this front. Thirdly the frequent flyers should hqve eqsy qccess to their services. Those qre my three criteriq but to be honest i couldn't make any decent suggestions for 'best site'.

I may be biased, but, although US Airways' site isn't flashy, I find it easier to use. I also find it great that you don't even need a frequent flier number to check in via the web on US Airways (on United, I can't web-check in as I choose to accrue all of my miles on US Airways, and don't even have a Mileage Plus account)

Continental's site is very user-friendly. I've use it several times to book and check schedules and is easy and fast. For the geeks, it also has a nice feature called TIMatic web, which provides information about immigration, customs, agriculture and health requirements for international travelers.

Check this one also, although it doesn't support on-line reservations it is very nice and has a cool design; its from an airline in Guatemala:

UwoAviation,
I don't understand your remark about UA's website. They actually have a great site for airline enthusiasts. See United.com, go to the bottom and select "Company Information" the fifth link down under ABOUT UNITED. Then select "History". There is a treasure trove of nostalgia here, that provides photos of fleet, advertising, memorabilia, etc... for each era in their history.

How do you figure that? The legacy carriers all match each others fares.

I've found that AS has a very useful website and they continue to update it and add features. WN is darn good too. I like to fly UA, but find their website needs some improvements, but, mainly that's pickiness on my part.

Cheers!

I have to agree with Roberta that Qantas has a nice route map. You roll your mouse over each city and it shows the routes out of that city, colour coded to show if the route is operated by Qantas, Australian Airlines, or a codeshare partner. Very colourful and easy to read.

Ease of use, either WN or AS. AS and WN both have great schedule pages, if you don't actually want to book the flight you can check the service schedule, both are organized well.

Virgin Blue has a pretty slick website as well, but I've never attempted to book anything on it.

What no one mentioned SQ? I don't believe it. It's not that great anyway, needs to be more interactive. I remember the old Concorde website had a game as part of it. That was really fun.

I like AA and CO personally. Easy to use with lots of information about their products.

PA110:

1) They don't have a route map.

2) No specs about their fleet, just pictures.

3) Poor investor relations section when compared to other airlines.

UAL has a good website, maybe thats cause I use it all the time. Americans is second best. I dont like the ones where even if you select sort by schedule it pairs flights together. I like to pick each one and pair them myself.

I would have to go with either SAS webpage www.scandinavian.net or Continentals as well. They are very good to find information you need on and they are very simple as well. You dont really have to use a whole day to find the information you need there.

Best as far as ease of use? WN hands down is the easiest.

The website sucks in my opinion, it only lets you book up to 6 months in advance whereas other airlines allow you to book up to 320 days in advance.

AS website rocks! Gotta love it!

Thats why WN site sucks? Who regularly schedules almost 11 months in advance?

Simplicity appeals to everyone. Look at WN promotions for instance. One click and everything is layed out: where and how much, it cuts to the chase instead of giving you a run for your money.

I love AS but I think most would agree WN's site is up there with the best of them.

Business travelers, leisure travelers, and those who want to save money now than at last minute.

AS, NW, UA, US, AA, HP offer bookings up to 320 days in advance, now thats a good thing to ensure that you DO have a rez.

They will save a lot more by flying WN than they would by booking 320 days in advance.

I agree in the convenience of booking 5 months sooner than WN knowing that I am going to pay more in the end.

If you book a flight 320 days in advance, it's quite likely the schedule will change in the interim. For example, I want to book some travel for this June on AS, but I was told by one of their reservations agents that they have yet to finalize their summer schedule. So, I could make a reservation, but it's almost certain the times will change.

I LOVE AirTran's website. Very fast loading and easy to find info. I also think that when Midway still existed, it had a very nice website.

So AirTran came in first, JetBlue comes in second. Doesn't get much simpler than that - especially if you're a TrueBlue member. Fast loadings also.

Southwest also has a neat site. Fast loads, detailed info on cities, etc. The one thing I don't understand is how to book an rt. flight on the site.

American Airlines has the slowest airline website. It takes forever to load prices and seat maps. Also, they don't quote a one-way fare on the first page. You have to select the flight, then you get the fare. This is untrue on a round-trip flight, however.

United also has a pretty poor website. It takes a long time to load and there's just too much on the home page.

My two current favourites are

1) Easyjet. The layout is really simple to understand and you can make a cheap booking with your eyes closed. Shame there aren't any photos.

2) BMI. Unlike other airlines' webpages which show stuff like "Palma £12" and then you can never find that fare, BMI's page actually shows you the days when that fare is valid, and you can book it!!

All airline websites should be like these....with a few more photos of course.
