According to a recent article by CNN, 4 members of the U.S. military were killed when their Cessna Citation 560 crashed outside of San Diego...

Nothing has been declared as the cause for the crash, although several investigations are now pending.

The plane was been flown on instruments for training, hmm i'd give them an F. Bad news none the less, poor guys.

I know the area of San Diego fairly well, with nightly breezes turning into small storms and fog easily. So, if you put that with a instrument training flight during night hours, any novice aviator could be easily overwhelmed.

Give it a rest, these guys were learning how to fly a bizjet, not fighting Al Qaeda. While it's sad, it's no more so than any other GA accident. Remember the military serves voluntarily at the pleasure of the American people, not the other way around

Hey... he was just lending a touch of humor to an otherwise humorless situation. It isn't such a big deal.. don't hop on him. I was thinking the same thing.
That does suck, though, as any plane crash does. It will be interesting to learn why the plane crashed, because bizjets tend to be very reliable.

I really dont get how planes just crash un expecticly sometimes. I really is wierd. But i was talking with a friend today about the crash and i was saying how if there were 2 crashes in 3 months everyone would get all scared. But when there are atleast 150 fatal car accdidents a day no one cares.
Also while listening to ATC tapes of Alasak 261 wonder what the pilots of the airplanes that saw it go down where thinking. It must be hard to complete a flight.

When the airlines used to do flight training in the airplane, every so often they would lose one. They could have been doing partial panel or using backup instruments(I don't know the 650) or even single engine work under the hood.
There are some wacky instructors out there and they could have been doing some non-standard stuff. You have to wait for the investigation.TC

I agree with a previous comment...even if they were going under the hood with one engine running, the 560 has a very reliable system which will compensate for the loss in thrust. Although, if it's not found to be pilot error, it would be interesting to see if the 560 has some sort of previously unknown problem.

This Crash happened only about 10 miles from my home, and it was horrible to see ... smoke and debris was everywhere for about five hours. It happened this morning at about five o'clock AM. Very Sad

Planes crash every day. Most days, there is at least one fatal accident. But you never hear about it...why? Because they're smaller aircraft (Cessna 172, Piper Cherokee, etc.) The media only cares if 1) it's a jet and 2) it has a lot of people, or someone famous. Same way with car crashes...it only makes news if it's a bus full of nuns, or affects some major artery.

It did indeed crash at approx 8:40pm local time on Wed 3/10/04. It did not crash at 5:00am.
The pilots were veterans and were very experienced pilots. According to the local news this is the first accident at the base in 20 years.
There is also another thread on this from Wed night, I just dont have the link.

First of all I wanted to say hello as a very long time reader of airliners.net. I never really wanted to join and post as I simply wanted to remain an interested observer-until now. Why post now? Because I knew and flew with 2 of the pilots who were killed in the C2 crash at Miramar. It doesn't really bother me that someone like RiverVisualNYC says:

They were some of the best combat proven helicopter pilots in the USMC-just happening to be flying a bizjet while on duty. Yes, spouses, kids, many of them-all lost their fathers last night in the line of duty-helping to defend our country. Yes, they previously fought Al Qaeda-and were preparing to head back to the Middle East to fight some more. And no Meister808, it isn't humorous-if even "a touch." I am 34 and this makes 14 very close friends I have lost in aviation accidents in the defense of our country. I have lost a lifetime of friends, yet I am happy to have known them all. They wouldn't expect ANY more sympathy than an unfortunate GA pilot-That ideology alone makes them simply "Great Americans."

I realize that there is a morbid fringe among our members that are drawn to such things, but if this site is about aviation --and not about crashes-- we should all find crashes to be tragic and not in the best interests of aviation.
