747 Top Deck Visits

Fri Mar 12, 2004 4:50 am

Silly question - I am flying a United 747 LAX-ORD this summer, terminating my flight in Chicago. I have flown on a 747 before, but I have never been on the top deck. Does anyone know if United will allow me to take a peek upstairs just to see after the other passengers depart? Not a cockpit visit, mind you, just to see the view from up there.

Thanks in advance!!

This shouldn't be a problem, in fact, they might even let you peek into the cockpit once passengers deplane, as long as the cockpit crew is still around.

It shouldn't be a problem at all. Last United 747 I was on I asked the F/As as soon as the plane pulled into the gate. They were nice and led me up the stairs and let me take pictures and visit the cockpit.

My last trip on United, the ORD-LAX leg was a 744, and the flight crew was happy to let me upstairs to look around and take a look in the cockpit.

I've found the UAL flight crews to be very accomodating for aviation enthutiasts wishing to visit flight decks and such. I'd ask the flight attendant before you board the aircraft.

A group of three aviation enthusiasts flew a UAL B744 from LAX-DEN in February. We talked to the flight attendant on the main deck and she said we could go up while the plane was boarding. Since the pilots were there we got to check out flight deck and the rest of the upper deck. Its worth asking for. Make sure to look out the windows, the upper deck towers over everything else.

The main thing I remember when I visited the upper deck of a Qantas 747 many years ago was that the "overhead bins" were beside the seats against the wall.

I thought that was quite strange and that it'd be annoying because you wouldn't be as close to the window.  Smile

Cheers,

Trent.

Better yet, try to fly up there. It is absolutely the best. Kind of like a private jet or private club. We flew LAX - AMS upstairs and it was the best flight I have ever had (great Dutch hospitality - do they still hand out the little Dutch houses as gifts?)

The bins next to the seats on the QF upper deck are in addition to the overheads. They are there because the curve of the sides do not allow the seats to be placed any closer while the seats are in line. It is my favorite seat as I can store water/snacks, books, laptop, iPod, etc next to the seat while everything else goes in the overheads.

Ken777... I agree about the side-compartments.... very useful, no wrangling through an overhead bin during flight. BUT the overhead bins on the second deck are smaller (significantly smaller if I remember correctly). If I recall right you can't even fit a rollerboard up there. (can anyone confirm that?)

No, you can't fit a rollaboard-size suitcase in the overhead bins on the upper deck. They are about big enough for a very fat briefcase. But (on UA, anyway) there is a large closet at the top of the staircase that will hold 4 or five (on the floor below the coats which hang above). If those are full you can put your larger bags in the overhead bins downstairs.

Right On Ken777....

I flew the Upper Deck SYD-LAX.... the most comfortable flight I have ever had. It was like our own private plane. 2 Great FA's and no other pax from downstairs to disrupt us during nap time.  Smile

The overhead bins on the upper deck are actually quite small due to the curve of the ceiling. However, the bins at the side of the window seats are fabulous. I remember the first time I flew on the upper deck (on a KLM 744 actually), the side bin completely swallowed up my samsonite pull along! (It's the exact dimensions airlines in Europe permit in the cabin) I can recall it to this day dropping right inside - it was a bit of a shock at the time as I couldn't see where it went until I looked in - they are quite deep!

In 1999 I got a peek of the upper deck on a VS 747 from MAN. The FA took me to the upper deck which was surprisingly small, then took me to the cockpit. I can't see why it isn't allowed today.

It's a dream upstairs! An unrivalled view of the wing, and unrivalled peace and quiet! But I remember the upper-deck of AF's 741's back in the '80s; a luxury lounge! On the 744 I've been on the upper deck with BA, KLM and VS. Personally, I found KLM was the best, in terms of comfort and service (and stewardesses!), and yes they did give me those little Dutch houses with cognac!

I love the upperdeck on the 747 - favourite place to fly ! It's always so much quieter. As has been said already, it is like being on your own little plane, especially on the Classic 747 - like being in a bizjet if you're in Business Class. I flew a few times on the upper deck, with SA, VS, BA and QF.

I`ve always found the upper deck quite noisy near the front due to wind noise. In the last couple of rows it`s ok. The bins besides the seats are ok, but I`d rather have a big overhead bin for my carryon. The seats right by the exits are great though, all the room in the world, even if your neighbour is sleeping.
