China Eastern To London

Sun Mar 14, 2004 3:06 am

MU will start flights from Shanghai Pudong (PVG) to London Heathrow (LHR) in April (A340-600). Virgin must be shaking in their boots!

MU will be starting 3 weekly PVG-LHR flights, how many flights a week do VS offer to counter the threat? Suprised BA hasn't entered this market.

With the fast growing Chinese economy, I am sure there is enough demand for both carriers. But yes I am sure it will cause Virgin to worry abit. They might increase frequency to daily from the current 5x weekly to attract more business passengers on VS250. China Eastrn (MU552) will be operating at a frequency of 3x weekly. The summer schedule shows Virgin operating A346s on the route and China Eastern operating A343s. Is this the case?

How is MU's service compared to VS? I think that will be a factor and I'm curious about MU anyway because I might have a connecting flight with them ICN-PVG later this year.

I've just booked with Finnair on this route (via HEL) 'cos I couldn't afford the VS business fare so MU's competition is welcome.

Under current restrictions VS is limited to 4x weekly on the LHR-PVG route. MU can offer the same frequency, but is starting up with 3x weekly. BA is actually prohibited from flying LHR-PVG.

In February British and Chinese officials agreed to modify the air services agreement between the two countries. The current one allows 10 weekly services between the UK and China (BA 6x weekly LHR-PEK; VS 4x weekly LHR-PVG). The new agreement will allow 15 weekly services, with an additional four cities availble to be served. Don't know which they are, and would assume BA and VS will have to bid to serve them.

One of these cities will include Guangzhou-Baiyun. AF already flies there with A332.

Didn't BA used to fly to Soeul as an extension of their Beijing flights. What happened to the flights?

Seoul was served direct, I think 3x weekly until about '98 or '99 with a 744. Dropped along with KIX and NGO during the onset of the economic downtown in the Far East at that time. Since then MNL and TPE have gone (extensions of flight to HKG), along with Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta in South East Asia.

Whats the leg room like in the MU A346. As well all know VS has NO LEG ROOM, rude staff, they charge you for good seats and every 0.0000001 Lb your luggae is over weight!!

I would go with MU!!
