Unconfirmed: Virgin Atlantic Gets HKG-SYD

Mon Mar 15, 2004 1:49 am

Hey all!

As you all know Hong Kong, British & Australian authorities met recently to discuss & negotiate Virgin's & Cathay's requests to initiate HKG-SYD-HKG & LHR-JFK-LHR respectively. And after all the talks had completed & a deal reached, the only matter left was waiting for approval from the European Commission.

However, it's been brought to my attention that Virgin's HKG-SYD-HKG flight has already been loaded into the Hong Kong Airport timetable from September 1 onwards & has also been loaded into the ticket system of a HK travel agency.

You can check this by going to www.hongkongairport.com & choosing either arrival or departure, going to the date drop-down box & clicking on “more schedule”.

Hope this turns out to be true. No media release as far as I know and hence a little skeptical, but perhaps an announcement is imminent!

Hkg82.

I still would be quite surprised to see this go forward, as the EC has very little incentive to approve this deal... but who knows

I thought the VS flights to SYD had already been approved by the EC?

The question at hand is CX's ability to fly LHR-USA, which is the expectant trade-off for a VS flight ex-HKG to SYD.

The USA cannot do anything to stop such a flight, but the EC can. It doesn't really have much incentive not to.

Where does this put Qantas then?

Weren't they going for HKG to LON or something like that? I can't see the Australian authorities approving this without getting something back for the home airline.

The EU should approve this deal. It's fair enough really and doesn't impair their attempts, futile though they may be, to re-negotiate Bermuda 2.

EU position is that all EU carriers should be treated equally. As the HK-UK deal only allows for UK/HK airlines to fly HK-UK, and for only VS to fly HK-SYD, unlikely to get approved.

British Midland must be furious beyond words at the prospect of CX flying LHR-JFK. They have been trying for years to get a few LHR-USA flights. I wonder if that will factor in to the decision of the EU.

The deal won't be approved quickly as it gives preference to a Non EU carrier on a route from the EU. CX will be allowed to fly LHR JFK, and BD will not be.

BD are right to complain... BA hopes that this one drags out.

Don't AI and Kuwait Airways offer LHR - USA services, too? Obviously those airlines aren't up to CX's standards, but that's hardly CX's fault.

Those are historic route licences.... granted by the UK government... The CX one is an EU issue.

If I'm not mistaken the negotiations are dealt with Hong Kong S.A.R government and not with the People's Republic of China, so I'm not sure if PVG has got anything to do with it.
