The story of my first airplane trip:
It was 1974, I was eight years old, living in Bakersfield,
CA. We were going from
BFL-
FSM (Fort Smith,
AR) for my grandparents 50th wedding anniversary. I was able to tell my mom what kind of plane we were on at each phase of the trip, because I asked the flight attendants each time!!
We started out in a United 727-100
BFL-
LAX:
I remember the entering via the airstairs. When we arrived at
LAX, we transferred to the American terminal, where my great aunt (who lived in Downey) met up and flew with us the rest of the way. For
DFW-
LAX, we boarded either an American 707 or 727 - I can't remember which, but I do remember the 3x3 seating:
Arriving at the very new
DFW airport, we deplaned and took a space-age trolley out to a remote part of the airport, where there was a fleet of very stylish Convairliner:

Absolutely the LOUDEST plane in the world - but a very nice f/a on that one!
The return trip was even more exciting. We re-boarded a Convairliner for our flight
FSM-FAY-JPL-
MCI. In transferring terminals at
MCI, it was dusk, and our tram turned a corner revealing several TWA 707's in the red arrow and elegant double yellow globe insignia. It was like a scene in a movie:
I remember entering and seeing the first class lounge with what looked to be a picnic table! I thought to myself, "Wow! That'd be perfect for us". I even said out loud, "Mom, dad, can we sit there?". Must have produced quite a few giggles!
The service on TWA at that time is just legendary. Yes, it was coach, but eastbound and westbound menus? For a hopelessly addicted eight year old, it was beyond cool!!
The final flight was a United 737-200
LAX-
BFL. I had a window seat, and I remember thinking, "wow!! That is a huge engine!!".
If you didn't think I was addicted before, I don't think there's any doubt now!!
