Shortest Flight On A Widebody?

Fri Apr 02, 2004 5:56 am

What is the shortest flight you have took on a widebody aircraft. Only one I can think of was the 767-300 from AMS - LHR, i think. But that was years ago?

The only one that comes to mind for me is PHL-STL on a TWA L-1011. That was back in 1986.

Back in the early 90s I flew a DL L1011 ATL-FLL. That is for scheduled flights.

I was once diverted to PIT on a LHR-IAD flight. Once IAD re-opened it was only 20 minutes flying from PIT. This was on a UA 777-200.

Now that you mention it Delta routinely operates widebodies on flights between ATL and florida cities (RSW, FLL, MIA).

Flew on an AA DC-10 years ago from O'hare to Boston. Seemed like a big plane for not that long of a route. Im guessing there was a continuation of the flight to some international destination...

DL is well known for using wide-bodies where others won't. Here are some examples:

MIA-ATL L1011 / 767
FLL-ATL L1011 / 767
DFW-ATL L1011 / 767

The even had a flight that went from ATL to MIA, and then made a 10 minute flight from MIA to FLL for positioning. This was an L1011 and now is a 767-300. I have ridden on that 10 minute segment!!

I believe the 'record' could be MCO-MIA on the AA A300 (I know for an intra-state route it's the biggest a/c in the US).

Eastern Air Lines' "Air-Shuttle Plus" is what comes to mind for me. Eastern was in fact the first airline in the world to operate "shuttles" when it inaugurated services on April 30, 1961 on the Boston/New York LaGuardia-Washington, DC route and they operated this service profitably for almost 30 years using Airbus A300s. Eastern was the only airline in the world to use widebody aircraft for shuttle services.

1978 and 1979: Eastern Airlines - L1011 service between BUF and YYZ.
(The flight originated in Miami. MIA-ATL-BUF-YYZ). I skipped school with
a couple of friends and we flew down on EAL to BUF in the morning (B727),
had lunch, then flew back to YYZ. Our unsuspecting parents never knew!
We'd put our school uniforms on, taxi it to Terminal 1, stuff our uniforms in an
airport locker, get changed into jeans, and check-in for the flight. The flight landed from BUF at 4:30 p.m., so by time we got home, it was as if we had an after school extracurricular activity........which, when ya look at it..we did!
 Smile/happy/getting dizzy

If memory serves me correct, then I believe we each paid a round trip
fare of CAD$38.00.

I know this isnt a widebody but years ago Delta used to fly MD-88's from Chattanooga, TN to ATL. The trip is only about 105 miles and if i can remember correctly only took about 18-20 minutes (right after the climb, seemed like we were already descending). Seemed like kind of a large aircraft for the short length of the flight. I also heard that when flying from CHA to ATL, ATC won't the aircraft leave CHA until it has a designated gate in ATL because of high traffic. Can anyone confirm this?

Wrong years. We EAL'd it from BUF to YYZ in 1980 and 1981.

FRA-AMS on SAA 747-200 (ZS-SAM). Total distance of 228 miles (198nm). That was back in 1997 when SAA still operated from JNB-AMS via FRA.

The only flights I've had on widebodies are the longest flights I've ever had, within minutes of each other in terms of hours. I flew BOS-LHR somewhere in the range of 6-8 hrs. LHR-JFK was slightly longer, but we cruised at 535mph, 20mph below the typical cruise speed of 555 mph. For BOS-LHR, we cruised almost 70 mph above the typical cruise speed. I remember the captain saying we would get up to 575 mph. Weird, eh?

Nothing too short:

LGA-CVG on a DL 767-300
ATL-RSW-ATL on a DL 767-300
JNB-CPT-JNB on a SAA A340-600
CPT-JNB on a SAA 747-400
MXP-LHR on a BA 767-300

Longest to date:

SFO-HKG on a CX 747-400

As of July 23, 2004, to be eclipsed by:

JFK-HKG on a CX A340-600

KLM 747-300: AUA-CUR (Aruba - Curacao).
I think it's about 70 Nm. Took us about 15 minutes.
KLM still flies this route, currently with a 747-400 as part of the AMS-AUA-CUR-AMS loop (KL783).

actually now that i think of it..the shortes wide body flight for me was TPA-FLL a couple of years ago on a 767. I thought it was kind of odd that Delta would use that big of a plane on such a short flight.

Sabena332 is right,
The shortest flight on a widebody is FRA-DUS. Operated by Lufthansa on Airbus 300. Flight distance is 117 miles or 188 km. It is closely followed by FRA-PRG operated by Lufthansa A300. Flight distance is 165 miles or 265 km. In third place is FRA-MUC also operated on a Lufthansa Airbus 300. The flight distance for this trip is 187 miles or 301 km. LHR-AMS, CDG-AMS and other flights that have been suggested are also very short but are a little bit longer than these domestic german flights.
