Being from the Cayman Islands, I've always grown up around Cayman Airways. I think Cayman Airways is an excellent airline and that many larger carriers should be following some of the examples set by smaller, more personalized ones. Just wanted to see what you guys think about Cayman Airways and Caymanian aviation in general.

I've only been to Grand Cayman once, back in the 80s. I arrived on a Piper Aztec from Nassau/Bahamas and all I remember is that they sprayed the inside of the aircraft with some sort of bug repellant when we opened the door (much to my bewilderment)... I then had to use the men's room in the customs/immigration building and found it crawling with cockroaches. After the initial "greeting", I expected a cleaner lavatory.
(I also remember that the Cubians gave us a very hard time flying over their lovely island. We had to fly at an altitude higher than is "recommendable" for an Aztec, i.e. an altitude where you really ought to be inside a pressurized cabin. Thanks, Fidel.)

well..............cant really remember that ever happening to me. but i do know most aircraft are sprayed with pesticides. For what im not sure, but to me its pretty everyday

I've flown Cayman AW from GCM-MIA vv. Much better service than the competing NW D9S service at the time (about 10 years ago).
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

Aren't they still technically bankrupt? Aren't they still flying 25 year old 737-200s? Isn't the CI aviation market still subject to protectionism from the ludicrously high landing charges at a very basic airport? Isn't the govermnent still subbing them vast amounts of cash? Hardly a "role model" imho.....

Are you kidding me? Unfortuntely I have to fly Cayman Airways several times a year and their planes are awful. Who wants to fly in an old 732 that hasn't been maintained?

PS: They have excellent maintainance programs and have only had 1 accident (which wasnt major) in their history

i flew them once from PLS-MIA r/t going to Club Med. I still have my Cayman Airways t-shirt that I bought on board 12 years ago. It was a magical flight.
I am glad they are expanding service in the USA. I'd like to see them add service elsewhere too. I for one enjoy being able to fly on any 732. I think its commendable that they try to compete with AA.

They have added 4 new gateways in the last year and and are looking at a further 4 in the USA.

Since you flew them last, they have also added bussiness class and prices that are $50 more than coach! great deal, i think.

Cayman Airlines has had its financial problems over the years....didnt they return 734s and replace them with the 732s that they are still flying to save money (or another financial reason)?
They really are in need of a new updated fleet......the 733s will help but 737NG or A32X aircraft would give them aircraft that could compete on the busy GCM-MIA route and the range to open new destinations with operational limitations.

the 737300 will be joined by 737700's next year
the 737-400'2 were the CI government's smart ideas. Cayman Airways made a profit with the 727's but the government wanted 'Modern Aircraft' (which they couldnt afford)

they do wonderful on Havana flights. All of them are full or overbooked and HAV is served mainly by the 733 now. heavy maintainance is usually done in GCM. They added ORD in December and are considering LAX, ATL, YYZ, and a couple others. supposedly.

I flew Caman Airways in March 2001 TPA to GCM to TPA with 13 other members of my family. It was our second vacation to CI. (Delta the first time) The service was excellent; we were told that the TPA to GCM leg was the first GCM landing for the pilot (a Camanian, as I remember), who had recently been promoted. A perfect touchdown. I must tell you Caymanair, your islands are a paradise, we all can't wait to get back. Such a safe place, beautiful weather, friendly, happy people. For you others out there, the cost is not much more than other Carribean/Florida vacation spots, if you consider what you are getting for your money.

also, what kind of service do you think a Good airline should have? exclude LCC. does a large network always matter when you think about flying an airline? I once overheard a lady at a JFK checkin counter saying she was afraid to fly an airline that only had 1 checkin desk.

I've heard and asked about those rumours for a year by now, is it true Cayman Airways will lease 737-700's to replace their current 737 fleet? Someone mentioned again in this post, but can anyone give me article or link to any article reffering to this lease? Which company will lease those 737-700's to Cayman Airways and how many will be leased, 5?
I would love to see another Caribbean airline operating new aircraft. Now Dutch Caribbean Airlines (DCA/K8) is the next airline who definately needs a fleet update....

I went to GCM in the past year. I flew Cayman airways from FLL-GCM and GCM-MIA. I think on the leg to GCM we were on the -300. It had bigger engines. It was also a convertable freighter as the overhead bins were mighty skinny and a friend told me after we got inside that he saw a cargo door on the outside.

I flew on KX years 3 years ago....I found your crews very friendly and the rumpunch was a nice touch to get you to relax and enjoy the hospitality of your wonderful island paradise......hope to fly you again someday!

I recently read an article on them that quoted they lose about USD$4-5 million per year, but their actual economic benefit to the islands is much greater. They are actively looking to acquire a second 737-300 and, as mentioned above, the 737-700 for longer haul services, possibly to LAX and the US East Coast. ORD hasn't done as well as expected, HAV has exceeded all expectations.
For the most part, they're run by locals but some of their senior management is expatriate. Richard Blake, their vp of marketing, is a former Pan Am exec, amongst several others.

After reading John Grisham's book- The Firm. I have really gotten to like the Cayman Islands and it aviation sector. I just hope that they can slap on a few more destinations!

thats very true. our people have operated it at a loss for 30 of its 35 years because it has provided a platform for economic growth.
anotyher reason i respect Cayman Airways is because it attemps to compete with the US majors in some difficult market conditions. Its interesting to note that when KX started the ORD route, UA entered and ATA added frequency. KX is repeatedly $400-500 less than the competition, but the market is crowded.

Didn't they used to have a JFK flight a while back? I remember having a reservation on their JFK-GCM flight a while back, but had to cancel.

Early 1990s. Come to think of it, I have and old Port Authority of New York timetable fro JFK and LGA that has a picture of the Cayman 737-400 on the cover. I am sure the service was very short lived.

it was. they have on occaison done special charters, like one that they did when the CI government gave 400 firefighters and recue workers free vacations after 9-11
