DL MD-11 Still Flying?

Sat Apr 10, 2004 6:16 am

When I was in ATL, I saw a DL MD-11 over by the FLY DELTA JETS Hangar. It was in the Ron Allen Scheme. What gives? Is it a backup?

Don't know about that specific a/c. Sounds like Delta will sell that one. Found this pic with a good caption though:

I would be very surprised if she is a W/O given this picture...

She is definitely a writeoff.

She has a gaping hole burned in her fuselage.

The aircraft is not being written off. It is in fact being repaired prior to departure for either victorville or montreal.

Upon a run-up of the engine after a swap out, a fan blade blew out and ripped through the ribs and spars of the wing.

802 is in fact a leased aircraft and as such payments are still being made.

Well, it's good to hear N802DE will be flying again. I miss the DL MD-11s already. Is it still wearing the DL livery? Hopefully it will on it's flight to Victorville. Of course, there's a good chance it won't be since it is technically no longer in service for DL.

I have seen 802 while taxing for take-off recently and I did not see any hole in the fuselage. The right side wing-to-body fairing also seemed to be in good shape. Can anyone confirm that it does have a hole in the fuselage or wing structure? OTOH, the number 3 engine was missing as well as the inner and outer trailing edge flaps on the right wing. It was pretty sad looking, like it has one main gear strut in the aircraft graveyard already.  Big grin

I hope it soon is flying again, there are too few trijets in the fleets of US airlines (save NWA). I taxied past it just yesterday and it looked fine but from 100ft away looks can be deceiving. -Matt in ITH

It is clear that twin engined and four engined jetliners are preferred more these days than trijets. The trijets are vanishing while the twin-engined and four-engined jets are rising.

I saw it on Wednesday while I was in ATL & wondered the same thing. Didn't get close enough to see any of the damage mentioned above though...glad to hear that they're going to fix it & it'll fly again.

I was in Atlanta on Saturday (April 10th) and it was still parked at the hanger. I also drove around the airport to see what else I could find...a 767-2 was parked at a hanger and also a 737-200 with the old wedge paint scheme. Not sure the significance of those -- anybody know?

I made the same observation as DAirbus.
No visible hole, but a visible missing engine.
Where have all the tri-jets gone...

I saw that MD-11 last week while taxiing past iit - and it in no way looks airworthy. In fact, it looked to me like it was about to be stripped down.

Much of the damage has been repaired, but not all of it. Remember, it has been in repair since early december.

I'll try to find some pics if possible...

Taxied by it yesterday afternoon/evening....no fuselage damage, just missing an engine. I remember right after it happened, it had it's best side facing the a/c that taxi by....and the rather well-done side facing the TOC hangar..hopefully it didn't alarm any pax  Big grin Hope to see her flying again, but sad fact is, she'll prob just be making it to the desert.

Delta made a sad mistake by retiring the MD-11....its range and pax capability was nice, I was chatting yesterday with some DL 767 pilots about this- good for FL-ATL runs.

Very funny Delta....joke's over now!.....bring them back!  Smile

They have 777, which has better payload/range capability than the MD-11.

Also, if they need more capacity into Florida, they can run a few more 767's down there, as they have one of the world's largest fleets of them.
Firings, if well done, are good for employee morale.

That was one thing the DL 767 pilots were telling me....they shoulda had the M11 back on the FL routes, for a few mega-huge hops, then some 757's in there too, to free up the use of these 767ER's for bigger legs...you should see the FL legs....5/6 to/from JAX a day, 10/11 MCO, 11 TPA, 11 FLL, 5 MIA, 3/4 PBI...not to mention these flights are routinely oversold....calls for a high-denisty airframe.

As for the 777....should be used for the long-haul, as it is...but there's not enough of em, their small fleet size is felt by the loss of it's longhaul brother, the 11.

Southwest has 40 flights a day from DAL-HOU, and I feel fairly confident in saying that they are not considering a larger craft for this route.

It's frequency, not capacity, if Delta doesn't get that, no wonder they aren't doing well. They have the perfect plane for high density domestic routes already anyways...the 764. They need to run a few more of them down to Florida, apparently.
