Who Would Not Feel Confident Flying In A L1011?

Sat Apr 10, 2004 11:06 am

I personally would feel pretty nervous taking a flight in one of these. Anyone else share the same feelings?

ANA777, I've never flown in a L1011 Tristar. I'd look forward to it.

What's your concern ?
By the way, is there anyone on board who knows how to fly a plane?

I had one flight on a Delta L1011 back before the retirement. It's a very solidly constructed airplane and I've never felt safer. Knowing how Lockheed built the aircraft to withstand just about anything made me feel quite safe.

I have flown on so many L1011's that given the chance today I would gladly board, take my seat and enjoy the flight.

I had my first and last flight on the L-1011 Jan. 1 of this year, C-FTNG on TS. Unforgettable experience, very comfortable and roomy interior and relativley quiet in cruise.

I've always wanted to fly on an L-1011. They have a great record and are built by a company that specializes in complex defense aircraft. I want to try to hitch a ride on one before they're all gone.

Well you posed the question and it seems like people who answered feel that the L1011 is a very safe plane even today when it is no longer the new kid on the block.

That's asking quite a lot.

Why would you be scared / nervous, ANA777Master?

I'm curious.

I doubt I'd be nervous about flying on any aircraft, to be quite honest...

I would get on an L1011 with about as much concern as I do getting in my car in the morning, as long as it isn't maintained in a 3rd world country, show me to my seat.

ANA777Master,

I do not think you are an idiot. Many people on here state how they do not like certain airplanes, and you have a right of course not to like the L-1011. I however always thought it was a beautiful airplane. I wish I would have had the opportunity to fly on one. However someone said earlier on this thread about how the L-1011 is no longer the new kid on the block. Well it is not really even on the block anymore, so don't worry your chances of being able to fly on one are very slim anyway. Here in the USA just about the only way I can think of that you could fly on an L-1011 is if you joined the military since ATA does a lot of military charters.

My confidence ranking wrt safety is based more on the airline than the aircraft type.

For example, I would be much more comfortable flying safety-wise on a 30yo Air Transat L10 than a much newer aircraft operated by a 3rd world airline.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

Yeah I would fly an L1011. As long as the airline keeps it in top flying shape, and there's nothing wrong with it, then yeah I'll fly an L1011.

I would get on one anytime but unfortunately not many remain in service. It's a solid aircraft as long as its maintained. I had the pleasure to by one the last Delta flight to Victorville to retire the fleet. That aircraft went through a lot and still made the historic trip fine. I even made a website with lots of pictures from the final flight. http://www.L1011.homestead.com

I flew from MCO to ATL (Delta) with L1011. It was very nice experience. The body looks very wide from inside. The seating configuration was 2-5-2. I don't think that I've seen 5 seat in a row before.

I have flown on the L-1011 9 times, all on Delta and I will tell you I feel safer on the L-1011 then a brand new Boeing 777. The L-1011 was designed to be way ahead of its time and has many safety features that have made it a great aircraft. It is also my favorite aircraft ever!

ANA777Master

I would like to know why your concern for this particular bird. Is it the age issue alone? Their are a lot of DC-10s and B747s And B727 and even B737s out their that are just as old. Aircraft lifetimes are based on cycles not just years. If the family car was subject to the same scrutiny then you would never see breakdowns except for flats along the roads.

The L1011 actually has one of the best safety records of any airliner even when you factor in the modest number produced.

The only time I would be concerned, and I've been flying for almost 50 years, is if the Airline had known safety and maintenance problems. I'm going to take a wild stab and say that since your in the US you are planning on flying ATA. If that's true, you should have no worries mate. They do not have these kind of problems at all. Enjoy the flight then when you get older you can have bragging rights.

And I'm sure you do value the opinions of others or you never would have started this thread. Just remember that the anonymity of the net allows some pretty callow folks to talk bigger than their pants so just ignore them. Most of us just like planes and flying. No harm there.

Yup. TS still has at least one operational L10 (sked on a twice weekly YYZ-LAS thru end of Apr) and 3-4 operational L15's. All will be removed from service in 2004.

I always felt confident in any airliner... I just don't feel confident in some airlines.
I would fly the oldest bird on earth with certain airlines and I would refuse to fly the last brand new top of the art Boeing or Airbus with some others.

I would love to fly the L1011 again and I always felt so very safe to fly them (but I have to admit - I always feel very safe to fly!). My very first plane was a L1011 from LTU from DUS to JFK vv. and I really felt in love with this wonderful bird. In the following years I used every chance to fly the L1011 and up to now (I think there will be no addition Crying) I have 15 flights on my list (all Delta) that includes Europe-USA, USA-domestic and Hawaii services.
I really miss this three-holer and for sure it will be my all time No.1 jet-aircraft!
Born to fly! It's more than a passion - it's a yearning!! At home in DUS(Dusseldorf)!

L1011 is an amazing plane. Having flown her many times when Cathay Pacific still owns them. I will still dare to fly and look forward to flying her again on Orient Thai if possible.

I have only flown on Tristars belonging to Delta Air Lines. Each flight I took, I felt very safe and if DL were flying them now, I'd be delighted to climb aboard.

However, there were some Tristar flights operated by a group called Air Ops from the UK, and I had no intention of climbing into one of their birds! Perhaps it was the livery that put me off. However up until the new Aeroflot livery came in, I would have declined an IL 96 flight, but now I'm not so sure...!

I wish I could fly in the early Tristars with 8 across seating, and the center partition...

Anyone know what Air Transat's schedules are with the L-1011s during the summer? I will be in the USA in May and maybe again in august and would love to make an Eastern Canada-Florida or Caribbean or Vegas flight in one before it's too late.

I'd fly on it without a second of hesitation if...
... the aircraft was well maintained and in a good condition
... I trust the airline

There are more modern planes that do not meet those two conditions that I would not board - be it because of the state that the aircraft is in, or because I don't trust the respective airline.

I've flown on TriStars operated by Delta and LTU - true, those flights are some time back by now - and I don't remember anything negative about those flights... actually, I enjoyed all of them.

That being said, if I had the choice between a TriStar on one side and a 767/777/330/340 (whichever you like best - I know what I prefer, but I don't like these constant A/B discussions), I'd most likely end up in the newer plane, given that my above conditions are met.

Happy contrails,
Frank

Typical charter offering. 3-4-3 but I had an Exit row so not too bad! And yes the livery(s) were rubbish. But I was glad for probably my only chance to sample the Tristar.

Here's one I would think twice about getting on though:

The L-1011 is a great aircraft and was ahead of its time back in the 70s. My daddy serviced them when EAL bought them. I flew them many times and think they are great. I think nowadays the 737 and 757 are much more cost effective to use, but the L-1011 is one great plane!

I fly on the L-10 very often. It is a very comfortable plane. Though I like working the lower galley on the -100, the -500 has a much better interior simply because they are 10-15 years newer than the former. I prefer our 757-300s, but the L-10 is awesome.

I did have a scare approaching LCA. Thunderstorms in the area and being in the 2R jumpseat not being able to see any surroundings. I know if wind/storms make the L-10 creak, sway and bounce that there is need to sweat. The customers kept looking at me for comfort. I tried to smile, but I am sure a bit of fear showed. I later talked to the FO that was flying the plane. When he performed a missed approach, another pilot elected to divert and a Cyprus Airways pilot decided to hold until N188AT landed. The second attempt was successful. He said it was the most difficult landing he had ever performed. I guess it really had nothing to do with the plane, but if it had been a smaller aircraft, we would have gotten slammed with turbulence. Of course, ATA will land when a lot of others cannot. The FAA just approved lower RVR to 1000 ft at Cat II airports for our 757s. This does not mean too much to me being in the cabin, but I have seen first hand at LaGuardia TZ flying when no one else was.

The L1011 is among my favourite planes and I enjoyed a lot the several trips I made with it with BA, SV, GF , EA, TW,TP, PA and NH.

A truly great plane, smooth flights, soft touchdowns, thrillling take-off angles, roomy and comfortable cabin and its unique "rumble" when you happened to be seated in the rear from the S shaped 3rd engine position !

CPDC10-30 said, "I had my first and last flight on the L-1011 Jan. 1 of this year, C-FTNG on TS. Unforgettable experience, very comfortable and roomy interior and relatively quiet in cruise."

Are you kidding me? I flew on a TS L10 about a year ago. My only other L10 experience was on an AC bird 20 years ago (could have been the same plane I suppose) but I barely remember it.

It was cramped, loud, plagued with mechanical problems and lacked that little "umph" you feel when a Boeing or Airbus fires up their engines. It seems to me that there are many L10 fans here at a.net, but I'm not one of them.

During one of our mechanical delays when departing from Pearson, a guy actually boarded the plane with binder and a toolbelt after all the pax had boarded. An F/A joked, "Uh-oh, they had to get the owner's manual out...I hope he brought his duct-tape this time". .

I wasn't supposed to hear that comment, and it's obvious they were just kidding, but still.....

As for the noise --- Deep down, I guess I kind of liked it to be honest. It was like having a little 'farvenhugen' on board. Got to feel the aircraft working working.

The best part about the trip was that it was only a 3 or 4 hour flight, and I had plenty to drink...but I won't be upset if I have to stick to newer aircraft in the future...and next time I'll gladly pay the extra few bucks to fly club-class or another airline so that I can get more than 28" of seat pitch.

Its a beauty to look at, but I feel its starting to get close to the edge of time where material failure becomes a factor.

You're mistaken.

There are B52s that are more than 20 years older, as well as KC-135Rs, and DC-8s. Many of NW's DC-9s are far older, as are most of FedEx's DC-10-10s or MD-10s.

I would fly another Lt1011 any time any day. As many tohers said if it was opperated by a 3rd world country I would not fly it but oter than that I love that plane. My first Lt flight was on Delta Airlines LAX - MCO. The plane and the seats were comfortable and the service was great. The last flight I did were on ATA back in 200 on TZ 709 LAX - OGG return TZ 708 OGG - HNL - LAX. TZ had really nice lt1011's in thier fleet. Well the lockheed 1011 will be remembered in our hearts forever.

Why? It seems to be a very safe aircraft. And built solidly.
