UA Plane On Friends

Fri May 07, 2004 10:56 am

Considering that tonight's finale episode of Friends is a new one, why do they use an old color scheme plane? UA hasn't had that red/orange CS for years now. Most people would probably recognize the gray one instead.

It's the same one they used during the Seinfeld episodes too. The image also looks reversed.

I'd presume that she was sitting in J, as the config was 2x2x2. Does UA have that config for J, or do they do 2x1x2 like CO?

looked like the exact same plane/scene as the Seinfeld episode where they take "O'brien's" limo...which was conveniently on today.

It is the same one used in Episode 22 from Season 1 of Friends "The One With the Fake Monica."

Most people don't care.. 99.999% of the people watching the show are more interested in the actors in front of the plane. The picture of the United jet (I agree, it looked like a DC10) was simply there to add the effect of them being in an airport.............

Oh my god, who cares????? The point of the show is the "Friends" finale, not making sure aviation is represented.

I agree its a small detail not many people care, but this is an aviation forum and we like talking about airplanes anytime we see em.

My bet is on a DC-10 and I'm not sure about this but weren't friends and seinfeld both produced in NBC studios using the same backdrops... kinda reminds me of the epsiode of A-team when Hannibal and crew take over a 747 that was hijacked and loose the breaks on landing and the plane stops right through the window of the terminal (scene stolen from airplane, another fine fine movie).

I bet; it's a DC 10 also.

and yes NBC produced both Seinfeld and Friends. However, Seinfeld was taped at Sony studios and Friends at Warner Bros studios.

Regardless, it's still the same background.

MD11LuxuryLinr,

Alfred Hitchcock once said that he tried to get every detail right, because even if only one person caught a mistake, then he will think about the mistake, rather than enjoy the picture.

That's why in North by Northwest, Cary Grant gets on an NW flight out of MDW for Rapid City, SD. Because at the time, NW was the only airline that could get you from Chicago to Rapid City.

It just makes me want to say, "Get an AA jet for the backdrop. The livery hasn't been changed in 35 years!"

Did anyone else notice that the jetway pulled up to the Right side door? I have never seen a plane boarded that way, i guess only in Hollywood!

I could be wrong, but that wasn't UA's DC-10 Business Class seat either lol. They didn't do all of the aviation right, but I didn't really care. I liked the ending(I think that's the details they tried to get!) though and I guess that's what counts.

Like I tried to explain in my deleted other topic, the biggest error to me was that they made a big deal about Rachel being in Seat 32C yet she was in Business Class.

Maybe I'm confused, but didn't Ross and Phoebe get tickets at JFK for a flight leaving for Paris in 20 minutes time - from EWR?

When they bought the tickets they just said to give them the cheapest ticket, not tickets on the flight to Paris

I think it was a 767. It was great when they got JFK and EWR mixed up.

The only reason they were buying tickets was not to get on the plane with Rachel, but to get a ticket that would get them through security. They wanted to get there and talk to her BEFORE she got on the plane. What ended up being the problem, was that they went to JFK instead of EWR.

It was definitely a DC-10. I could tell just by the cockpit windows. Must have been that daily EWR-CDG that United operated using DC-10's.... Insane

Friends and Seinfeld loved United...when Ross went to China several years ago, they showed several UA 747's.

It was nice to see the old paint scheme regardless!

BoSugaDL: I noticed that as well. In fact, there was a gate at the old Stapleton airport in DEN that boarded on the right side...often DC-10's, also. B44 I think it was.

You people need to get a life! The United plane with the very old livery on the shot was there to lend realism to the shot. However, anyone who has traveled realized that even the airport was not realistic. First, that terminal was tiny for a wide body jet. Also, nothing indicates that Rachel boarded the plane in the background. The biggest giveaway was that they were boarding from the right. Also, the person who took the boarding passes closed the door at the end. The first time he punched a code but not the second time. Regardless, that was not a regulation door, just a regular house door. I would even suspect that the "business class" airplane is a mock up since it would be too difficult to use a real plane.
Let's take this a little bit further. They got one security detail right. Phoebe and Ross had to buy a ticket to get through security. However, when Rachel got the phone call about the "phalangy", how come there wasn't a flight attendant right on her tail about using the phone. And, let's face it, wasn't there (technically) a security threat because of the situation that arose that made the people want to deplane? However, people were back on the plane in about twenty minutes.
We could sit her and pick that episode apart piece by piece. But as other people have said, no one (except for a.netters) gives a hoot about the details. The only thing these people wanted to know was "did she get off the plane or not????", which was the climax to the episode.
The point was for everyone to enjoy a little bit of Hollywood's most successful current television series. I sure did.

so what's a left falangy?

It holds together all the doo-hickeys on the left side of an airplane. It was broken so all the passengers had to get off. They put a lot of extras on, and then everyone got back on.  Insane

I'm sorry. I just couldn't resist!  Big grin

Probably because the producer doesn't know any better. May I add, if this were Newark, Rachel would probably be boarding a Continental airplane, not United. Also, I noticed the plane interior wasn't correct for a widebody. The walls were that of a Boeing 727/737 from the early '70s.

I've seen that same backdrop with the old UA plane on several TV shows--besides "Seinfeld," on "The Nanny" and others.

The photo backdrop and the boarding area set are probably just kept in storage somewhere here in L.A. and hauled out every time a TV show needs to film an airport scene.

And to prove what a dork I am, did anybody else notice the cities on the departure monitors? Flights to "Dallas" and "Fort Worth"? Wonder if they listed "Newark" and "New York Kennedy" as well. HA! Will have to wait for the DVD...

I can't believe this topic came up.... honestly not surprised though.

She was allowed to use her cell phone on the plane bcause the plane was still at the gate, that's why they were able to get off and on so quickly.

Good God, why am I going to answer this...

During the airport scene when they are looking at the departures board at "JFK", under Ross or Phoebe's right arm, you can see Newark listed....unless of course it was non-stop service to Newark, OH or Newark, DE...oh yeah, silly me!
Blame my wife, I taped it for her...
Off on another topic, regarding Seinfeld episodes in later years, I used to love Jerry having an EWR Family Day brochure hanging on his fridge...clearly you can see EWR...
