According to the Topic ("No Frills" London To Capetown & Durban) Civair will make use of a 747-200. They will fly in and out of Stansted according to their website.
I was wondering how many (if any) 747"s visit or make use of Stansted ?

Ah nice one! I bet they charge less fees than LGW. It's also quite a convenient airport for those going to central London, in view of the regular train links. It is clearly a 'low-cost haven', evidenced by so many low-cost flights every day. It is also indicative of the fact that, if the price is right, people will travel to the departure airport instead of flying from their local airport.

I did a photo search > boeing 747 > london stansted : only a handful of cargo airlines that fly to STN with 747. There are photos of MEA and Saudi Arabian 747s but I doubt that they are regular scheduled services.

I flew in and out of STN recently.
It's a nice airport (newish, modern) but it isn't great for planespotting (from inside the terminal anyway)... they have erected large semi transparent screens in front of the main terminal to make it hard to see the planes!
I was also disappointed to have to pay 6 quid on a bus to Stratford then a 2 or so quid tube ticket just to get from STN into the centre of london (was a late evening arrival back into STN).
Back onto the topic... Phuket Airlines are starting to fly a 747-200 from Bangkok to London; but I'm not sure whether they're flying into LHR, LGW or STN.

civair booking engine does not show the flights as yet. which 747-200 are they planning to use? is it ex-SAA?

I flew out of STN for the first time a few weeks ago, and have to say I much prefer LGW, even if it is the other side of London.
LGW seems to be more comfortable, better facilities, better bars, better viewing, and (of course) better planes!

B747s are a regular sight at Stansted; she doesn't currently recieve any scheduled B747 pax services, but does recieve much in the way of cargo. These include services from Asiana Cargo, Atlas Air, Global Supply Systems (STN based -400F operator), JAL and Nippon Cargo Airlines. Others arrive on a more ad-hoc basis, for example Polar, Lufthansa, Singapore and Saudi Arabian. STN is also big on executive B747s (inc. SPs!) with aircraft from the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Oman being very frequent visitors.

The new South African low cost airline has set October 30th as the date of its first service from Cape Town to London Stansted. The airline will operate 3 flights a week with a Boeing 747. In addition Civair will launch Durban to London Stansted service on December 3rd.

How much do food and drinks cost, or does one have to starve (I guess at least water is free, or does one have to take it at the washing basin)??
I was also disappointed to have to pay 6 quid on a bus to Stratford then a 2 or so quid tube ticket just to get from STN into the centre of london (was a late evening arrival back into STN).
How long did that take you
Stansted express is even more expansive albeit quicker... more than GBP 23 return, more than many tickets...
I prefer good old Heathrow or City - and some tickets from there are quite cheap, too, so AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA-LHR (LCY) AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA EUR 99 Return, BA LCY, LGW or LHR (?) - AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA GBP 74 return, which makes it often cheaper, since you do not need to take much local transport to your destination...

Bus to Stratford - 45minutes; tube to Picadilly Circus - 20 minutes.

Looking at the Civair website, the 747 in question sure looks like a QF 747-300 with minimal changes to the livery.....

The engines on that site are from the -400. It looks like they have taken a picture of a QF 744 and taken off the winglets. Looks like a horribly amateur site. Yet another venture that won't get off the ground? I won't be putting any money their way just yet.

Yes the rail link from Stansted to the City does run every 15 mins but from LGW you can go every 15 minutes to the West End (Gatwick Express to Victoria) and every 15 minutes to the City (Thameslink). This makes it convienient for business and leisure passengers alike.

This is silly. You can't have arguements over "which airport is better/easier to London" because it depends WHERE in London you want to go! If I wanted to go to the west end / Hyde Park etc, I'd choose Heathrow. If I wanted to go to the City then Heathrow would be the very LAST airport I'd choose.
£23 for the Stansted return is cheap for the distance (37mi). Heathrow Express (HEX) is £23 for a 15-mile, 15-minute journey.

LHR is much better than stansted and very conveniant for the city, and it is much cheaper. Tube ticket below £4, and in the city quicker than from Stansted, and so much cheaper... tube leaves more often than every 15 Min. Stansted Expr anly stops at Liverpool st (and somewhere before), and going further in the city again costs!
