Airlines Might Quit CDG Due To Callopsed Terminal

Sun May 30, 2004 2:16 pm

Airport Authorites are considering moving some airlines from CDG to another smaller airport nearby due to the callopsed terminal at CDG. The $900 million Termianl was built by Air France in a move to try and win customers from rivals British Airways and Lufthansa. The CDG airport company have asked Civil Aviation Authorites for permission to move some airlines to another local airport because it would make it easier for CDG to cope over the Summer Season.

I have to laugh...they talk of a smaller field nearby. Makes you imagine some kind of airfield with cows grazing on it somewhere nearby....not the other relatively large international airport Orly! Also, Orly is not exactly nearby, it's the other side of Paris!

They could be talking about Le Bourget--between CDG and Paris.

That would be cool. I would have to take a trip if they opened LeBourget back up the commercial flights.

They could be talking melt down. A bit like if LHR / BA lost T4 really. No-body would fly via LHR, you'd be nuts to with so many choices. The queues would be a nightmare going to the US. Isn't CDG the third largest transit point for US-bound traffic (after LHR and AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA)? At least they can ship traffic to KLM/NW ahead of the deal  Smile

From what I have read on le figaro.fr, the president of airport authority has suggested that thraffic from CDG be moved to ORY.

Bue due to sounds nuisance, all cities nearby refuse this idea.

ORY is on the south side to Paris, but very close to the city of Paris, therefore I think it is a good idea.

Beauvais is quiet far from Paris and has not the ability to handle international traffic. Just a low cost airport.

I just hope that all SkyTeam flights remain in CDG. I will be flying MEX-CDG-MAD and STR-CDG-MEX with AF in July and I would hate it if one or more of my flights were routed to/from a different airport.
Upcoming flights:
April/May: AM MEX-SCL 788 (J), AM EZE-MEX 789 (J).

Eddiebaby, why use AF to go MEX-CDG-Madrid? I'd use Iberia if I were you. You want to get to Madrid right? Also, more interesting, exotic airline rather than the bog-standard all white plain vanilla AF type.

Eddiebaby,

If I where you I would avoid CDG at all costs, it was a nightmare transfer airport anyway, but now with the terminal 2E gone is must be hell.

After having flown both airlines, that "bog-standard" was a lot better than "the exotic airline".

Well, the story of how I came to fly to MAD with AF is a bit long. The bottomline is that AF is the airline with whom I could get the "cheapest" fares (there is nothing cheap about the amount of money I am paying but I guess it is because it is the summer season).

Anyway, hopefully I will land at and depart from CDG.

Upcoming flights:
April/May: AM MEX-SCL 788 (J), AM EZE-MEX 789 (J).

As always the Spannish seem to have only managed to shoot themselves in the foot again. Ah well, you'll have a good flight eitherway. Pack a hard-hat just in-case though. And make sure your mobile is off because it could cause vibrations apparently.

All the major airlines will keep their flights at CDG.
Some airlines moved back already from CDG2 to CDG1 like IBERIA, AIR INDIA, or AIR TAHITI NUI.
More will follow soon.
The renovation work at CDG1 has been stopped for the moment.

SkyTeam airlines will remain at CDG2F or 2C.
KLM WILL move from CDG1 to CDG2F on june 1st, as anounced but NW will probably remain at CDG1 for a few more months (NW was also supposed to move to 2E this summer)

No traffic will go to LBG !!!  Insane

But some flights could be transfered from CDG to ORY...
AF will tansfer to ORY some domestic flights, not generating International connections...and that's it !

Everybody wants to wait the first results of the investigations and what will happen to Terminal 2E before taking any "bigger" decision

Noise considerations my ass! LeBourget takes in Freight and maintenance traffic all the time...they can help take up the slack for cdg along with ory. Some union is holding up ADP for money on this thing.

Considering LBG as an alternative to CDG is like considering Concorde back in service to boost traffic over the Atlantic !!!

LBG is closed to all civil regular airlines for some 30 years.
What was used to be the main terminal is now a (great) Museum.
There is NOTHING but runways for regular PAX traffic (no terminal, no check-in facilities, no customs, no luggage delivery system etc...)

Re-builidind the whole Terminal 2E at CDG would be even much faster than creating new conditions for PAX traffic at LBG !

OK So there are a couple of minor considerations  Laugh out loud ....Remember this is only temporary....run limited flights to take the pressure off CDG during rebuiding and let the people check in through expanded facilities in the show areas or the general aviation terminal or through new areas that could be quickly built in one of the maintenance hangers (unless they have been torn down in the last 2 years). They could be bussed out to their flights and board on truck-borne airstairs, and deplane the same way. One could even take a tour through the truly impressive museum while waiting to change planes. We know there is space for temporary facilities at LBG..they have the show there every two years, and they accomodate thousands of people a day there.

Wonder what EasyJet will have to say about these slots at ORY suddenly becoming available for AF - Kind of proves their point that there is more room at ORY.

I agree with AF330. The collapsed terminal only opened last year, I don't believe that the growth at CDG has been such that it cannot operate as it did 12 months ago!
I don't think we'll see any airlines 'quitting' CDG as the title of this thread suggests
