Convair went from the 540/580/600/640 & 5800 series piston/turboprops directly to 880/990 series jetliners, never heard of a 770.

From what I have found out there must have been at least one aircraft that was designated a CV-770 (N600AB). Later this aircraft seems to have been (re?-)converted to a CV-580, but what did it look like as a CV-770 ?

@backfire:
that is obviously the aircraft in question, but according to AndersNilsson's list above it should be a CV580 with that registration (and as probably everyone would agree it is...).
So again: what made it different in looks in its CV-770 phase ?

Before the term "regional jet" came about, weren't several companies back in the 1960s talking about working on a regional type aircraft ? Convair I believe was one of the companies.

There are a couple of erroneous references to 770's in various databases, but such an aircraft never existed. It is more a typo than anything else.

The 880 and 990 both had different names at first - but neither of them were called the 770.

Actually there is a CV-770 but only one was ever made, and don't try to correct me, the company i work is the current owner of Convair. The Model 770 was never actually made by convair but was the designation given to one of the many turboprop conversions of the CV-340. It is very similar to the CV-580 but if you look closely at the picture in the response above, the nacelles and tailpipes are slightly different. The A/C in the picture C-GKFY is parked in YLW still, there was talk of Kelowna Flightcraft mounting the a/c on a pole in front of the companys office building.

If you look at the first photo you can see the different tailpipes, the a/c in the background of the second photo is KFY

Two CV-340s serial numbers 91 and 131 were converted to Allison T-56 power for the air force and designated YC-131C. When they were sold surplus they were given the unofficial designation of Convair 770 as they were different than the 580. sn 131 was scrapped in early 1974.

YC-131C USAF's First Turboprop Aircraft?

Tue Jun 15, 2004 3:19 am

Question:
Is it true that the Convair YC-131C was the USAF's first turboprop aircraft, as claimed by the seller of a YC-131C Service Test Manual ?

Lockheed built four C-121 Constellations with P&W turboprops for the Navy. Two were later transferred to the Air Force and operated as YC-121Fs. The Air
Force also had two turboprop YC-97Js. All were around about the same time but I have no idea which aircraft type was in service first.

I received an email from someone who is not an a.net member and cannot post this - so I am posting it for him.

" ... I have been lurking for some time but haven't joined A.net yet. I saw your post and wanted to comment. I used to crew(flight attendent/mechanic) a Convair 580 in the early 80's. Our chief pilot was familiar with the 770's (2) that were converted since he had flown one for Chance Vought aircraft. They were converted as test airframes during the quest for the reason that the Electras were loosing engines. It was found that there was a harmonic problem with the engine/nacelle/wing on the Electra and the problem was fixed. Thats why it has a non standard cowling and nacelle. In about 1981 one was on a ramp at one of the Oklahoma City airports. We had a trip there and walked around the airplane as Fred told us the story. I couldn't tell in the posted picture but on both sides of the fuselage there are large spring loaded plates that were used for something like vibration detection, flush with the skin. The other aircraft was in a storage building behind our hanger at HOU (Hobby A! irport). We accidently found it when we went looking for parts for our aircraft. We ended up stealiing the right side service door and placing it on our airplane. The 580 we flew is in the A.net database...was originally owned by Bethlahem Steel. We flew it from '79 to 82 and put about 2000 hours on it. I'm not gonna join just to post this so if you want to cut and paste this be my guest. If you have any questions email me. ... "

And on another note: " ... and don't try to correct me, the company i work is the current owner of Convair ... " - your hostility isn't appreciated at all.

I didn't mean to be hostile with my response....I was trying to prevent a flurry of posts from people saying that a CV-770 never existed which always seems to happen here on the forums.....I apologize if I offended you.

As Dc8Jet said two airframes were converted to YC-131C's, but only sn 91 was given the designation of a CV-770.
