US: Not Flying To DAB Or MLB

Fri Jun 18, 2004 4:45 am

When did US stop flying to DAB or MLB alltogether? Not even an RJ is assigned to the route?

I use to remember US having at least 4-5 737 flights a day into DAB.

All US service at DAB & MLB was discontinued in September 1997, if my memory serves me correctly.

I've heard rumors that a major airline is planning on adding routes into DAB in the near future...could it be US with RJs?

May 8, 1997, Thursday, AM cycle

US Airways said Thursday it will drop unprofitable routes, halt jet service to nine airports and consolidate some maintenance and reservations operations in a corporate cost-cutting move.

US Airways plans to halt service to its top money-losing destinations: Cincinnati, San Antonio, Albuquerque, N.M.; Austin, Texas; Bangor, Maine; Daytona Beach, Fla.; Islip, N.Y.; Melbourne, Fla.; and Newburgh, N.Y.

It will close its Los Angeles-based pilot and flight attendant crew base and phase out maintenance centers in Roanoke, Va., and Greensboro and Winston-Salem, N.C.

Maintenance centers in Pittsburgh, Charlotte, N.C., and Tampa, Fla., will be expanded to absorb the work of the shops in Virginia, Greensboro and Winston-Salem. Those operations will be phased out from September through the end of 1998.

Five old F-28 jets and 17 old DC-9s will be grounded in the next few months. Retiring the F-28s eliminates one entire fleet type for the airline.

Maybe in the near future we'll be seeing US flying RJ's from DAB to CLT and PHL.

Daytona Beach isn't exactly a profitable destination for carriers. Delta does well becuase they have a near monopoly on the airport, except for a couple daily CO ERJs, and 3 Cape Air flights.

One of my teachers at ERAU, who used to work at AirTran, said that FL had looked into operating into DAB, but that it would not be profitable for the airline at this point becuase DAB is too much of a leisure destination.

The profitability of airlines at DAB has long been a two sided argument. The airlines here make money, as did the service in the past. Where the airlines see the loss however is economically, they see that they can put the plane on another route, make $1 million more, then turn around and say " we're loosing $1 million in DAB" What has been increasingly beneficial for DAB when dealing with the legacy airlines is that MCO has some extreme LCC competition, where many people will pay a $50-$100 premium to fly out of DAB. That premium over MCO is becomming more and more attractive as MCO's fares get lower and lower. I would expect to see at LEAST 2 new airlines at DAB in the next 2 years.
Experience is what you get when what you thought would work out didn't!

MLB is getting a new airline in September *grin*

By years end MLB will have charter flights 3x a week to Germany and England, supposedly DL flights to NYC, and the *grinning* airline. More talks are in the works as the incentive package is making it really hard for an airline to say no and that is why Delta will be adding service to a market other than ATL.

Would this be another airline based out of another NYC airport that purchased a IFE company based in MLB and installs IFE on a LOT of Airbus A320s?

Does anyone know if the new DL destination from MLB will be a Delta Connection destination or a Delta mainline flight? A DL Connection flight seems the most likely... I could see a MLB-LGA CRJ flight...

I tend to do a few flights in and out of MLB each year and there is somewhat of a market there. The ATL flights are usually near capacity in late summer and mid-winter. There may be a need for a NYC flight since Spirit left MLB a few years ago and took with them their LGA flights. Since then, I dont think there had been NYC flights. Also, I believe there is still a Comair flight to CVG a few times a week (probably only weekends).
The charter flights I believe are being created for MLB business that have contacts in Western Europe. Of course, thats what I've heard in MLB, who knows.

Anyway, MLB is quite the small airport, although being remodeled, but some new serive could really help boost the livelyness of the airport (for lack of a better word)

what remodeling? Its an absolutely beautiful terminal... although the car rental area could be moved around a bit & opened up... and walking to bag claim makes you feel like you've just walked to Daytona Beach...

DCI and to JFK. Not certain when it will be announced. It was supposed to be announced around the beginning of May, however the loss of ACA has caused Comair to relocate some of their aircraft to the BOS market and thus took away the aircraft for this route. It will be announced once the FRJ's have a new operator and are returned to BOS. Right now it looks to be a 50 pax CRJ though twice a day to JFK.

what remodeling?

MLB is remodeling. Presently they just completed a new restaurant and a more efficient security checkpoint. There are plans to renovate the terminal further to include another cafe/duty free shop on the concourse as well as a welcome center that will be converted from the hangar currently used by FIT.

It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.

actually i think they want to put the duty free area where I want my gate to be ** grr ** and its just before the security check-point. Most of the things going on are small fixes, but nothing I'd call a "remodeling" of sorts..

Where exactly do you want your gate to be? If its where I think you are saying they are about to start strengthening the taxiways (or supposedly) and that is why DL relocated from Gates 2,3,4 to 2,4,6.

They are also about to start renovation of the bagroom areas. When this is complete TSA Bag screeners will be relocated out of the lobby of the airport and in the new bagroom (approx 30 days from now).

If DL does well with MLB-JFK, perhaps we will see JetBlue enter the picture when they get their Embrarer 190s...

I've asked Jimmy (director) to let us use the fire doors to the left of the security check points ... right now there is just a navigational light from the 1940s era display... we would just set up a counter with our backdrop & use that as a gate until we depart sterile out of MLB....

USAirways moved out of DAB I think after GE moved out. I may be wrong, but wasn't it GE who used to have several offices across the street from the Speedway where the NASCAR offices are now and Embry Riddles off campus classrooms?

When GE or whoever was here, DAB was a busier business location, now it is about 95% leisure.

We had this thread a few weeks back when I posted wondering why American Eagle doesn't fly here from MIA, comparing that to NW serving smaller destinations from its Detroit hub like Alpena etc.

Airlines I could see coming to DAB

If the Emb-190 works for Jet Blue, it would probably come to DAB. Jet Blue had announced Daytona as one of its possible Emb-190 destinations.

I could see Northwest flying CRJ-200s from Memphis daily and perhaps weekend flights from DTW.

USAirways Express could fly from CLT daily on CRJ-200s.

I think the new Independence Air should look into flights from IAD on its CRJs. They don't have MCO named yet and since Washington-Orlando market is already over saturated- Ted, United, Song from IAD, USAirways from DCA, and Air Tran, Southwest from BWI, Independence could fly to DAB.

Hell one of Independence's first destinations is LAN which is furthur from Detroit than Daytona is from MCO, and there is more stuff to do in DAB than LAN.

The only other LCC I could see flying to DAB is possibly Spirit seasonally from DTW

People have been saying that more airlines will come into DAB for years. It aint gonna happen!! and if it does I will be VERY surprised. I have been here since 98 and the only thing thats been goin on at Daytona was airlines puling out or reducing flights. From what I was told fees cost way to much at DAB, its all leisure as stated, and there are airports within somewhat easy driving distance that just simply make more sense for the airlines (ei. MCO). I wouldnt expect anything new in Daytona.

CLT with a variety of equipment. Mostly D9S, 733, 734, and F100.

Segment King,

What destinations are you looking at? I figured FLL, but I thought you guys operated out of a sterile concourse down there.

right now we're a 100% non sterile operation.. the TSA has threatened to turn the FLL commuter terminal sterile, so we have to be ready for that. One of our new cities' passengers will depart sterile, but arrive non-sterile. MLB is a city where we'd like to have the option of departing from Gate 1 (sterile) versus a nonsterile gate (beside teh check point) for markets that don't require a sterile connection, which is why I want the area just to the left of the checkpoint as a nonsterile departure/arrival gate.

We're trying to keep EYW non-sterile, but the Palm Beach flights will depart sterile, as will Sarasota. FLL & MTH, I hope, we'll be able to keep doing how we're doing in..

Vintage Props and Jets flies Beech King Air 100s.

Also a new airline at DAB is that new charter airline TAB Express. I finally seen one flying fully painted in TAB scheme and not an all white B1900.

It has to do with security. Passengers on flights that depart out of Ft. Lauderdale's commuter terminal do not go through a screening process. Most of the planes are small 8-9 passenger Cessnas. The biggest plane that the terminal gets is Chalk's 17 seat Mallards.
