JetBlue Adds Service From New York

Discount Carrier JetBlue Adds Service From New York to Destinations in Florida

NEW YORK (AP) -- Discount carrier JetBlue Airways Corp. reported Thursday that it will launch service from New York's LaGuardia Airport to destinations in Florida, while increasing the number of daily departures to Florida destinations from Boston's Logan Airport and New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport.

The carrier will add new service this fall to Fort Myers, Fla. from Boston, and is expanding its existing service from Logan International Airport by up to 20 daily departures to Florida cities including Fort Myers, Orlando, and Tampa. JetBlue's new route is currently being offered with an introductory sale fare of $69 each way, when booked at JetBlue's Web site.

The airline plans to offer seven daily roundtrips from LaGuardia to Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood beginning September 17, and is also adding flights to additional Florida destinations from its base at JFK. JetBlue's new route is currently being offered with an introductory sale fare of $79 each way, when booked at JetBlue's Web site.

In addition to up to 17 daily JFK departures to Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood, the airline is expanding service to include as many as 15 daily departures to Orlando, up to 14 daily departures to West Palm Beach, up to 10 daily departures to Fort Myers, and up to eight daily departures to Tampa.

Wow, I wasn't expecting 7 Daily LGA-FLL. I thought they would split it up between MCO and FLL. It is very ambitious of B6 to add 1000+ seats to the NYC-FLL market...However it is a large enough market and should be able to absorb the new service. I'm sure American and Delta will be responding soon enough.

Does anyone know what gate they will use at LGA? The headline on this thread said from an AC gate but I coudln't find it in B6's press statement. From their schedule, they only need one gate.

I too am surprised that everything is being thrown to FLL. But their CEO said in a presentation a few months ago that the reason they didn't add more flights to FLL was because they didn't have enough planes. But their new flights from LGA will take up at least 2 planes. I think this will be a very popular route though, and hopefully it won't cut into JFK's traffic too much.

About the new BOS-RSW service, that's excellent! I know Song has had extraordinary LF's on this route, and they have high yields on the route since there is no other airline operating the route non-stop. No wonder JetBlue wanted to jump on while they could.

I read they are "sharing" a gate with Air Canada. It seems like they would need two gates to handle these flights (it looks like two planes will handle this rotation):

New York (LGA) to / Fort Lauderdale to
Fort Lauderdale (FLL) / New York's LaGuardia
Depart - Arrive / Depart - Arrive

6:00am - 9:00am / 6:30am - 9:20am
7:30am - 10:30am / 9:40am - 12:35pm
10:00am - 1:00pm / 11:10am - 2:05pm
1:15pm - 4:15pm / 12:40pm - 3:35pm
2:45pm - 5:45pm / 5:20pm - 8:20pm
4:15pm - 7:25pm / 6:30pm - 9:30pm
9:00pm - 11:59pm / 8:05pm - 11:00pm

I see several times they will have two planes on the ground in LGA, Does AC have several gates?

Almost 11k seats per day between NYC and Florida on JetBlue, that is amazing!

So exactly how many flights are their from the NY area to South Florida area? Does everybody in each of the two Metros travel to the other on a daily basis? Good Lawd! That's a lot of seats! But if you can do it, go for it. Go ahead B6! Now, what is AA, DL, CO, US gonna do about it? Should be interesting to see...

Meanwhile, here in pitiful RDU.. we have about 15 flights to South Florida (FLLx4, MIAx3, TPAx1, MCOx7) with <1400 seats.

I am wondering if all this increased service will clog up the Air Traffic System. There is an enormus amount of Air Traffic that goes up and down the East Co I know that U.S Airways Funnels Planes up and down the coast all day from PHL -to many Florida destinations, as do other airlines from LGA and BOS. As well as the Shuttle serice between BOS-LGA-DCA. Are any controllers out there that can explain how put all these airplanes... I know there one two Jet routes (J75) that goes up and down the coast. Any info would be greatly appriciated.
I am very excited that Jet is doing well. I rember when I read about B6 is in an Airlines magazine, bacn in 1999. I have only flow B6 from OAK-LGB a bunch of times but would love to try them out cross country if they ever start serving PHL ( Maybe through JFK w E190). Comment, Suggestions from anyone always appriciated.... I will be in front of this computer ALL DAY AHHHH ;-(

What a great airline! Man, they are just so awesome!

I think all FLL is great. They are doing in FLL what AA has done to MIA. Get as much market share as possible and then dominate it. I can only hope MIA is next. Love to see 20 daily flights from JFK to MIA.

By the way, for all who dislike B6, remember the three daily flights to FLL from JFK prior to B6. One MD 80 on TWA and two B727s on DL.
And remember the one daily flight from JFK to PBI? A TWA MD 80.
15 a day!!! I love B6.

I doubt you will see that many flights a day from MIA TO NYC (JFK OR LGA)
AA will tear them apart or at least put down a very good fight. I think now AA has 13 flights a day from MIA To NYC Area.

But congrats to B6 on expanding!

Besides the normal jet routes NE - FL, B6 A320s have ability to go deep water which are used when traffic or weather is tying up the system...  Big grin

Also expect MIA sooner than later. A good portion of that FLL traffic is from farther south and have asked for MIA. It would be a fight with AA but let's face it, B6 and AA have more overlap than any other airline with B6.

It is competition of AA, DL & NK service to LGA and already always flight is full. It will make extra flight from LGA-FLL on B6. I think will do well with them into the this fall. I surely will hopefully with workout is good.

as far as the ATC issues go....you can only fit so many airplanes into a finite amount of airspace...not so much enroute, but in the terminal areas...LGA flow control delays are horrendous now during bad WX..this certainly won't help.

Does New York City-Florida need that much service? The amount of flights that B6 is adding is like both AA and UA flying every 30 minutes between ORD and LGA.

So exactly how many flights are their from the NY area to South Florida area?

This winter, we are looking at this:

American (final winter schedule won't be out until winter. Look for more MIA/FLL-LGA this winter)...
FLL-LGA: 4x
MIA-EWR: 4x
MIA-JFK: 6x
MIA-LGA: 10x
PBI-LGA: 3x
TOTAL: 27x

Continental...
FLL-EWR: 7xr
MIA-EWR: 5x
PBI-EWR: 5x
TOTAL: 17x

jetBlue...
FLL-JFK: 17x
FLL-LGA: 7x
PBI-JFK: 14x
TOTAL: 38x

Song/Delta...
FLL-JFK: 5x
FLL-LGA: 4x
PBI-JFK: 2x
PBI-LGA: 5x
TOTAL: 16x

Southeast...
FLL-SWF: 1x
TOTAL: 1x

Southwest...
FLL-ISP: 3x
PBI-ISP: 2x
TOTAL: 5x

Spirit...
FLL-LGA: 8x
TOTAL: 8x

USA 3000...
FLL-EWR: 1x
TOTAL: 1x

All in all, there will be 113 round-trips every weekday between the New York City and Miami metro areas this summer. Only Los Angeles-San Francscio comes close to matching that within the US.

think now AA has 13 flights a day from MIA To NYC Area.

This summer they are operating up to 21: 4 to EWR, 7 to JFK, and 10 to LGA.

What about MIA news? any info on that?

A jetBlue spokesperson confirmed they have talked with MIA officials and that MIA is being looked at. They, however, mentioned that it is being looked at the same way that many other cities are, and it is not on the priority list. Neelman, however, has commented otherwise in the Miami Herald, talking much better about potential MIA service. He even publicly threatened to move the majority of FLL service to MIA if FLL does not go ahead with the runway expansion (though I could never imagine that ever happening).

There is more demand between NYC and South Florida then there is between NYC and Chicago.

I second that... with NYC-FLL is the highest O&D, most traveled route in the country!

MAH4546,

This is the number one of JetBlue is going to New York with more than of 38 flights of the day. It is bigger people are flying to LGA, JFK. Those are too many people are flying to Florida flights. It would be perfect timer. I am really think about with those day will get jumbo jet to JFK.

Scotty, IMO B6 will never have anything bigger than the A320. Yes the skies are full from NYC to South Florida airports, but the answer in todays world will be more flights, not bigger aircraft.

MIASkies:

14 flights a day between JFK and PBI may sound like too much to you, but this last winter they ran up to 11 per day and filled them all. 3 additional flights per day and they will still be full.
PBI is South Florida's BEST airport!

how will jetBlue get creative with gate space? They are using C4, C6, and C8 full time and occasionally C9 and 1-3X daily B9....and still filling it up!

glad to see B6 going to LGA...I may actually have a chance of flying them, now!

looking at it, jetBlue did something really sneaky...they scheduled service when song took out some service! On Sep 7, FLL will be lsoing 1X to JFK and 1X to LGA and another JFK run will be taken down to x36! Additionally, BOS will be downto 2 daily from 2X daily +1X x1.

Those are temporary reductions that usually happen in September-October, the slowest travel period into/out of South Florida. Song will be putting alot of thier 757s into heavy maintence, and frequencies will increase again in the winter.

Many New Yorkers have family in Florida so there is A LOT of VFR (Visitors Friends Relatives) traffic.

US stopped competing nonstop on LGA-FLL/PBI a while ago....Although they still do route pax via CLT and DCA on those routes.

40 minute turns seem a bit ambitious in LGA, unless there is a LOT of padding in the schedule. Aaah, yes. THREE HOURS allotted for the air portion, whereas it's really a 2:15-hour in-the-air segment, so that's a good bit of padding. Let's hope that Air Canada doesn't hog those gates, b/c otherwise JBlue pax are going to be regularly sitting on the ground at LGA waiting to get to their gate.

Best,

Bill
