No A346 At ORD
Why cannot carriers fly the A346 into Chicago O'Hare but other airports in the US allow them?

I do not think IB flies to ORD w/ A346 but rather A343.

I have seen IB with only the A343. As such a predominant airport, ORD does not look like it should have a hard time accomodating an aircraft 16 ft longer than a 744. And lots of 744s fly into ORD.

Scotty, I don't think Iberia flies the A340-600 to ORD, they fly the A340-300

I don't know if Emirates has an A346, but I remember Emirates talking about a possible Chicago route which would bring in an A345. That would be pretty cool.

IB I think only flies the A346 in the U.S. to MIA (along with 742's and 743's for the afternoon flight) and maybeeeee JFK on occason.

Is there an FAA thing about length or weight on this aircraft at ORD? Otherwise, it would seem carriers would want to use this aircraft, particularly Lufthansa which operates 744s and A343s already.

Yes, it is for A346 will come into MIA with IB & VS, too. As you can see with A346 will landing into late afternoon with Virgin Atlantic of A340-600 aircraft and will able all right with them.

ORD most likely does not receive the A340-600 due to market demands, not FAA restrictions.

Could it be, perhaps that IB simply chooses not to operate the 346 to ORD so they have it available to operate elsewhere? They only have so many to go around.

Found an article at Chicago Tribune online. It says that the FAA has expressed reservations to airlines wanting to operate the A340-600 at ORD because the runways are not able to handle the sharp turns this aircraft would make without going in the grass. IB and LH have expressed interest in this aircraft at ORD. They also stated that the A380 would have problems when introduced espcially on the I190 overpass.
Apparently, the FAA sent a letter to the controllers union absolving them from responsibility should the A340-600 fly into ORD and inadvertently miss a taxiway. Wow!

Again as stated before, IB DOES NOT fly A346 to ORD...Simple as that, whether it is because of demand or runaway length..Or combination of both. IB A346's currently fly to MIA on the Midnight flight out to MAD on certain nights if not the 742/743 does the midnight flight complementing the 530PM MAD flight.

AlitaliaORD - So Iberia has a tough time filling up that daily A343 on on the ORD-MAD flight? I've always wondered how well/badly that flight does but I figured all of the AA feed that ORD gets would help fill that sucker almost year round.

Bartond- Maybe tough is an overstatement, but it has somewhat of a hard time keeping it filled at off-peak times. During the holidays however the flight is a goldmine. I flew it a couple of years ago during Christmas and it was packed not only for my flight but all during the Christmas Holiday.

Would LH's loads justify making ORD-MUC a 346 or ORD-FRA service 2 346s instead of a 744 and a 343 (current)? That would mean that the early FRA flight is perpetually undersold and the late flight perpetually oversold. Does LH even have a 346 to send on FRA-ORD or MUC-ORD? They only have 10 in the fleet currently.

Actually, IB has been performing well in ORD load/yield performance for some time. The standard equipment is A340-300. Mid-june saw the B747-200 due to high loads. The B742 will return for the month of August. The A340-600 will operate the ORD-MAD rotation beg. in September.

Lufthansa, at least for their Frankfurt-O'Hare inter-hub flights, probably wants to operate a 3-class aircraft. Since the A346 is 2-class configured at LH, you probably won't see the aircraft on this high density route. The only chance would be for the Munich flight, but then again, the airline has only 10 airframes available.

Hopefully it will not take the folks at ORD to long to make the runway improvements to start having A346 service here in Chicago.

I have to ask, what is the big deal. So IB does not fly the A-346 to ORD. Why are you so bent on them doing so. I would imagine as long as you can get a seat to where you want to go, it shouldn't be that big of a deal. As for runway improvements happening quickly at ORD, its Chicago, nothing happens any faster than King Daly want it to.

They had to re-enforce one of the bridges to support the weight of the 340-600...something having to do with the fact that all the wieght of the aircraft would be on the bridge at the same time(both nosewheel and base wheels). Currently they keep inspecting the bridge to make sure there is no fatigue when the 340-600 comes in.
