I don't know if SU ever flew to Montevideo, but I can assure you that there was at some point (maybe it's still there) an Aeroflot office in downtown Montevideo.

Edit: sorry, somehow I mixed airports and routes in ONE SAME sentence! I should go to sleep now. As for the best served ROUTE, I'd say MAD-GRU or MAD-EZE, but I'm definitely not sure.

Iberia and TAP are probably your best airlines to fly to Latin America as this is where many Latin American countries can trace their routes too.

Well latin America is big but it depends which area woild you like to visit. Main cities; Mexico DF, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are well served both by AM, IB, RG and AR.

Anyway, main routes between MEX and Europe are these:

AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA-MEX Lufthansa
CDG-MEX Aeromexico, Air France
MAD-MEX Aeromexico, Iberia
LHR-MEX British Airways
AM), Netherlands">AMS-MEX KLM

Recently, City Bird flew BRU-MEX and Aeroflot also flew MOW-HAV-MEX. Other airlines that operated services from Europe included CSA, Sabena, SAS, Swissair, and Interflug.

GRU is served with the same number of flights from MAD as EZE by IB (or MEX for that matter)?

That doesn't seem that logical at first glance, but I guess there must be a reason for it.

Re: SU

SU had a considerable network in Latin America. In fact, compared to current network (except IB), all other European airlines tend to pale to SU in 1991.

The following destinations are taken from SU timetable from 1991:

MEX (2x; 2 stops) IL6
HAV (7x; 1, 2 and 3 stops) IL6, IL86
KIN (1x; 3 stops) IL6
MGA (2x; 2stops) IL6
LIM (3x; 3 and 4 stops) IL86
SCL (1x; 2 stops) IL6
EZE (1x; 3 stops) IL 86
GRU (2x; 3stops) ILW
CCS (1x; 2 stops)IL6

And guess what?
1. They were still serving BGW twice a week with a TU5.
2. They were codesharing with PA on their NY services
3. SU had an impresive African network covering: ALG, TUN, TIP, CAI, SID, DKR, BKO, Conakry, Freetown, COO, OUA, ACC, DLA, Malabo, BZV, LAD, EBB, ADD, DJI, NBO, Bujumbura, DAR, Seychelles, Antananarivo, Lusaka, HRE (A total of 26 destinations)
Next flight: IAH-DBX-MRU-ANT

To answer the question about SU into Latin America, they used to fly Moscow - Shannon - Havana - Lima roundtrip for years. I don't believe they still do that. I had a cousin who would fly that route from Sweden and back. The entire trip took him about two days each way, and he saved very little, from what I remember.
To me the best service from Europe to Latin America is still AA via MIA and DFW. One stop service. I also understand that KLM flies to several cities. They fly AMS - BON - LIM, few times a week. At least they did until recently.

I flew the MEx-HAV-SNN-SVO flight back in 1991, on board SU's Il62. The HAV-SNN portion in a single-aisle aircraft was, simply put, claustrophobic. Upon arriving in Sheremetyevo, we were kept two hours inside the aircraft on the apron, without air conditioning, food, drinks or explanation of any kind, after a 17-hour flight... I was glad I bought sandwiches in Shannon...

Last time I checked, the Latin American cities best served by European carriers are:

GRU - 52 weekly flights, 8 carriers (AF, AZ, BA, IB, KL, LH, LX, TP)
CCS - 41 weekly flights, 7 carries (AF, AZ, BA, IB, LH, TP, UX)
MEX - 36 weekly flights, 5 carriers (AF, BA, IB, KL, LH)
EZE - 34 weekly flights, 5 carriers (AF, AZ, BA, IB, LH)
GIG - 28 weekly flights, 5 carriers (AF, BA, IB, LH, TP)

It's quite remarkable that CCS outranks MEX on the list. Obviously, if AM's MAD (x11) and CDG (x7) flights were included on the list MEX would far outstrip CCS, given that S3 only serves MAD (x5) and TFN (x1).

Although part of the Caribbean Islands these Latin American nations I believe have the following service to Europe.

San Juan, Puerto Rico:

IB to MAD - 7x weekly - A343/A346 service
VS to LGW - 2x weekly (I believe - may go to 7x) - A343/744 service
as well as Euro.Charters to the pricey resorts on the island.

Dominican Republic:
(Santo Domingo, Punta Cana, Puerto Plata, Casa de Campo/La Romana)

Has alot of EURO service to and from the cities listed above in the Dom.Republic. Some of the airlines that serve the island are:
IB, AF, LH, Condor, Thomas Cook, LTU, Air Madrid, Sobelair, Corsair, Sata Int'l, Air Europa, Brittania, Transaero, Lauda(Austrian), Eurofly and others.

Cuba:
(Havana, Holguin, Santiago, Varadero, Cayo Coco)

Has alot of EURO service to and from the cities listed above in Cuba. Some of the airlines that serve the island are:
IB, Thomas Cook, AF, BA, Novair, Air Europa, Volare, Edelweiss, Martinair and others.

So how come Aeroflot pulled out of all these routes? A result of fragmentation possibly? Or weren't the seats filling up?

Once again thanks for all the info.

S3 will also be adding a Saturday flight to Santiago de Compastella later this this month. Where Caracas really wins is it's number of destinations. Alitalia serves both Milan and Rome; TAP serves Lisbon, Porto, and Funchal, while Santa Barbara serves Madrid, Santiago, and Tenerfie. On three carriers alone, you have eight destinations.

Don't forget IB's new nonstop from MVD-MAD five days/week, operating the A340-300. This will mark the first non-stop from MVD to Europe, rather than having to connect/stop in EZE, GRU or GIG.

PU does operate the MAD route, but flies its 763 via GIG, rather than non-stop from MVD. PU's MAD flight is code-shared with RG; RG owns a majority position in PU and manages the carrier's operations. All flights and programs are jointly-operated with RG.

MVD used to have quite a large selection of European carriers, including KL, AF, and SK (believe it or not), serving it, in the 60's/70s/80s. With the 'contagion' of Argentina's economic blowups and increased carrier concentration, these carriers have either left the LatAm market (SK) or concentrated their operations to the region's primary hubs in EZE and GRU.

Hola Pdpsol!

No, it isn't strange you mention SK. My family (shortly before I was born) took SK from LON to EZE a couple of years running. A DC-10 operated the service. From LHR they would fly to CPH, and after spending most of the day there, took an evening flight via Brussels, Paris, Madrid, Rio and Montevideo or some milk run like that. 36 hours in total! SK stopped flying to MVD and EZE by the late '80s, if I am not mistaken.

If you count that small stretch between North and South America and the Caribbean within this list......then this is the destination list for KLM and Martinair:

KLM:

MEX, AUA, CUR, BON, PBM, GRU, UIO, GYE and LIM

Martinair:

CUN, HAV, VRD, HOG, MBJ, SDQ, POP and PUJ, and a weekly charter flight to PMV

At some point in 1990, Aeroflot had this incredible routing:

Santiago de Chile-Miami-Shannon-Stockholm-Moscow, with IL62

Aeroflot routes were more political in a way.

In EZE they were trying for years to increase frequency (they operated once a week). Also much traffic went to Spain and Italy so they were heavy discounters on that routing.

@ KL713

Then you can add for KLM SXM as well and for MP you can add SJO to your list.

CCS - 41 weekly flights, 7 carries (AF, AZ, BA, IB, LH, TP, UX)
MEX - 36 weekly flights, 5 carriers (AF, BA, IB, KL, LH)

A little update to MEX.

Yes, cargo. Martinair Holland's only scheduled passenger destination in Latin America (outside of the Dominican Republic) is San Jose, Costa Rica.
