Horizon air announced today that it is planning on adding 4 seats to all 18 Q400's in the fleet. Increasing seating from 70 to 74 seats. Essentially adding another aircraft to the fleet. This will reduce the seat pitch from 33 to 31 inch the same as our 37 pax Q200 fleet.
Anyone who flies Horizon have any thoughts on this? Personally even though I'm short I've always appreciated the extra legroom. When choosing between a southwest 737 and a QX Q400 what would you choose?

Well the WN 73G (assuming new interior) features leather seats, generous pitch, smooth cruising, and the comfort usually associated with larger aircraft like the 737. The QX Q400 sounded okay before the added pitch was removed, even though I've never flown with Horizon, but as a rather tall person, 31-inches of pitch does not sound fun. Two inches really does count !

I remember upfront of those Q400s has more room to begin with. I would choose a Q400 over any other plane any day, except the 747.

Pitch is less important on the short hauls. This is no big deal. I'm 6-2 and 31" pitch is fine for a short flight for me.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

That is until a huge storm comes and you have to sit on the runway for hours.
But seriously, I don't think this will cause to much trouble, even if it is a little cramped. Also, what's the range of the Q400?

Q400's not a wide or tall fuselage tube at all -- to some extent it needs every little bit of extra space to create an illusion of overall roominess.
But oh well -- I guess QX must at least be happy with the aircraft and its customer response so far with them, to go ahead with this extra packing move. Hope it works out.
As for Bombardier I hope if they do indeed stick around for the long haul and come up with some brand-new airliners, that at least a few of 'em will be something like a Q400 but with a truly-roomier, E170-style fuselage instead.

DfwRevolution - what do you mean by 'generous' pitch on WN? Please could you tell us the figure so we can make a proper comparison.
Yyz77 - surely that's a matter of opinion? Personally, I don't want to wear my knees on my chest regardless of how short the flight is.

I can't find the exact page on their website any more, but I remember seeing something before about how they've had better than average leg room all along, and it goes on to show the average seat pitch on each type of 737 they have. I think it ranged from about 32" on their oldest 737-200's to about 33" on their newest 737-700's. And they also said they had thinner seats, so a given seat pitch figure feels more roomy on Southwest than it might on other airlines.

I'm only 5'8" and I find a 31" pitch to be very uncomfortable for anything over 1 1/2 to 2 hours. It is okay for short flights, but hopefully my layover is long enough for me to tour the airport so I can unfold my legs. (Okay, so I have long legs.)
Anyways, I am sorry to hear the seat pitch news, but maybe they will put it back one of these days when the service levels across the board rise again.
