World's Largest Airline
Does anybody what the world's largest airline is in terms of the number of aircraft in their fleet and in the number of passengers carried last year? Thanks in advance for the help.

i believe AMERICAN has the most planes and carries the most people...but i don't have the numbers to back that up...

Without a doubt, American's the largest carrier in the world by fleet size, with 726 aircraft in its fleet (that's solely mainline, and does not include the AmericanEagle aircraft).
Now, if I'm not mistaken, Delta's actually the largest airline in the world based on passengers carried. However, that might've changed when American and TWA merged. Yet I'm still pretty convinced that Delta's the largest based on RPMs (Revenue Passenger Miles).
Anyone have any further information?

...keep in mind that these numbers include mainline only. When you count the regional fleet of wholy owned subsidiaries, it changes (though AA is still on top, either way).

FYI Southwest has 400 aircraft in ther fleet now

Both leased and owned...I think it is anything flown under the carrier's operating certificate. But as Concordeboy notes, it doesn't include regional affilliates.

In 2002, AA was the largest by RPM (121,646.2 mill. RPM). UAL had 109,378.8 mill. RPM and Delta had 95,207.9 mill. RPM.

The previous numbers were taken from the 7/2004 issue of ATW, in the "World's Top 25 Airlines" section. The remaining top 25 (for fleet numbers, which is what you said you were interested in):

QF Group has 192 aircraft in it's fleet now which incorporates it regional QantasLink of 42 aircraft (10 BAE146, 32x Dash 8), Australian Airlines (5 aircraft - 767-300) and Jetstar (16 aircraft 14 x 717-200, 2 x A320) So those numbers are outdated. (source QF fleet listing)

Digression or diversion. I would have thought a carrier like BA would carry many more passengers than lists show given they seem to show up everywhere. They seem to have so many wide bodies-but is this the illusion of LHR being a hub.

Holy moly.... I knew AA was the biggest, but I didnt know that it was the biggest by FAR. 139 757s and 45 777s?? That is...very large. lol....
United only has 97 752s and 55 762/3's But they do also have more 777's and 744's (obvi) than american. It seems that the MD-80 really is the backbone of AA's fleet, with 335 a/c. What will they REPLACE them with though??

Your numbers are incaccurate. AA has 34 A300s, DL has 121 757-200s, and DL has 123 767s, and they have 71 737NGs, not 65.

AA does not plan to replace the MD-80s for a while. In fact, they are homogenising the fleet in terms of equipment and fixing up the interiors. I see them flying at least another decade.
When they will be replaced, my guess would be that AA will purchase either the 737NG or whatever comes after that, or the A32x or whatever comes after that, or some Embraer equivalent if there is one by then. Yes I know this is covering all the bases

The numbers posted are only what is active in the fleet. If you take into consideration the number of stored aircraft, then your numbers would be correct. As for the Delta 757's, the numbers do not include the 36 that fly as Song.

Well, I know from DL's site that they have 123 767s, and 71 737-800s, ALL of which are active. Your numbers were in the same ballpark, but I just wanted to post the exact numbers, including aircraft that are stored. DL has removed all of its 767s from the desert, and I've never heard of any 737-800s being stored.
