Big Error In Sun Sentinel

Thu Jul 22, 2004 8:54 pm

If you saw today's Sun sentinel in South Florida there is an article on the front page about More Air Traffic Contollers Needed out there. Then there is a picture of a Northwest a320 taxing and a UsA3000 a320 taking off. The caption says the plane taking off is a Usairways jet. My question is how can you confuse something like this when it says usa3000 right on the darn plane!

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/southflorida/sfl-sfaa22jul22,0,2251594.story?coll=sfla-home-headlines

On that site it shows the story and if you click the picture on the left just read the caption. This story was front and center on the newspaper.

Yea that is pretty dumb! but then again their journalists not aviation enthusiasts like ourselves...people who don't share the passion like we do just see it as "another airplane".

That happened during 9-11 as well many people were saying it was 747 (people as in News Industry), when clearly by looking at the footage you could tell it was a twin jet liner.

That's journalism for you. I find that all the time. Why can't they take the time to do just a little bit of research? That says a lot of the person writing the story. Same thing happens with firearms in the news, the actual weapon involved is a revolver and they are either picturing or describing a belt-fed machine gun. Go figure.

I understand how you can mix up an US Airways and USA3000.

Maybe they thought "3000" was a special paint scheme  Laugh out loud

I have found that the area of aviation in general is probably the one in which the news media, and that's mostly TV, is least informed. Newspaper reporters tend to spend the time to research a story, but not always.

I offered my assistance to several TV stations where I used to live to review their stories on aviation events and happenings for technical accuracy, but none of them took me up on my offer. I guessed they chose to let their ignorance continue to be broadcast.

Yes, it was a mistake, but it was a photo caption which really does not affect the article. The article was about aviation, so they wanted an aviation picture and somehow came up with that, but you do have to give them credit for finding a picture with a control tower (that can barely be seen).  Wink/being sarcastic

I just think it's funny that the usa3000 name is quite hard to miss on that aircraft but they managed to.

Well US Airways ICAO code is USA after all, but they don't know that. Not to mention both companies have completly different liveries. Don't by the Sun- Sentinal. It's as bad as my local newspaper back up in Philly, the Distorter (Reporter).

Actually the Sun-Sentinel is a much more local paper being in the Broward County area and tends to win much more awards then the Herald does.

It's funny when the big news stations run a short segment on, say, a bomb threat at LAX, and then they dig up some old footage of BA 777s in the old livery taxiing at LHR or something. It's more funny than annoying at times.

B-52s don't take off. They scare the ground away.

Sitting in the news plex right now at a station in Miami, I can tell you that we have thousands of tapes in the library and instead of going out to shoot footage or find extra footage it's a lot easier to go into the tape library and grab a tape with what you need.

Probably not the best of ideas to insult the newspaper that sends one of your moderators a paycheck  Big grin

Seriously, these things happen. Someone asked someone else to dig up a US Airways picture and either it was mislabeled or someone simply was not as familiar with aircraft as ourselves and just saw the big "USA" on the side of the plane. It's quite easy to see how the error got in. If it really bothers some people go here http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/corrections/ and submit a correction.

This is very interesting story about FLL and what are you think is going on with traffic controls?
