Kenya Airways Entering SkyTEAM

Thu Jul 29, 2004 6:19 pm

Ia Orana all,

I just read that SkyTEAM will greet its very first partner airliner namely Kenya Airways from november 2004.
After KLM,NWA and Continental it was only logic that KQ was going to join SkyTEAM.

Happy Flying,

Following the same logic, Copa should also join because of CO's membership.

Malaysia Airlines should also join because of their close ties with KLM, acting as their only feeder carrier to Australia (SYD/MEL/PER/BNE/ADL) + AKL.

This is how Kenya Airways can add to the existing AF & KL coverage of Africa :-

That's really good news.
Keno, tx for the map
AF is traditinally strong in western Africa. Adding KQ will complete the African coverage.

Great news! Between KLM, AF and Kenya - they've got a good hold on Africa. Now we need as mentioned above, Malaysia, COPA, Air Tahiti Nui, China Southern and Hawaiian to jump onboard. And we need NWA, CO and Aeroflot to make it official!

This is great news!...

...Except it's totally false.

Kenya has potential to be member. (Even more so now that SA is in Star)

I'm sorry but you have inaccurate information here, and I'm going to ask for a source.

Remember MEA was gonna join around now too, weren't they?

After NW, CO, and KLM around September, look for Aeroflot in spring 2005.

Once NWA/KLM enter, I would imagine that it will just be one airline after another entering SkyTeam.

Would Air Tahiti Nui cut off its ties with AA if it entered SkyTeam?

Remember MEA was gonna join around now too, weren't they?
I remember hearing that they were going to join, but I have not heard about anything since.

NonRevKing, "AF Cabin Crew" works for AF, he probably read it in an inter-company distribution  Big grin

MEA's not entering SkyTeam does not have anything to do with Kenya entering SkyTeam or not ...

CO/NWA/KLM is for sure with the start of the fall program 2004.

Im sure that AV will join instead of CM. They would feed the DL, CO and AF flights to colombia, plus would provide good connections to destinations they don´t serve. Thus, SKYteam´s prescence in PTY is very small compared to BOG. And they have alliances with DL and AF, who are founders, and with CO, that is new. Thus, CM only has an alliance with CO and NW. Avianca is a lot bigger than CM, and is already profitable. BOG is a bigger market than PTY, by a lot of difference.

They won't be full members of SkyTeam, this I'm sure of. At the most they will be some type of "second tier" member, with close ties to the other members.

The potential is there for sure tho, but they wont be full members anytime soon.

For what it's worth, I have flown on KQ (AMS - NBO) and they were absolutely FABULOUS!!!!!!  Big thumbs up I can't praise them more. The aircraft (B767) was immaculate; the FAs where some of the friendliest I have ever seen; the beverage/meal service was excellent!!

It was a wonderful experiance and I know Skyteam would be making an excellent choice if KQ were to become a member.

Yes indeed. I've seen the 777 at AMS recently. A beauty. As for KQ service, it is excellent. I flew them AMS-NBO (non-rev).

MEA is still joining Skyteam, but it has been delayed until next year as they "work out some issues."

They exceeded all the quality requirements for Skyteam.

This is directly from the horse's mouth.

No, MEA will not be joining Skyteam. No invitation has been sent.

CO, NW, KLM in Sept.

MA and KQ will have ties.

SU joins spring of next year.

That's all that's on the radar. Anything else is speculation and wishful thinking.

Sorry NonRevKing, but I have my sources and they are very very reliable, as I said, straight from the horse's mouth.

They will be joining next year, this is the plan.

If you would like my source and some more details, email me. My email is in my profile.

So CDG-NBO operations will be restarted? Who will be the operating carrier. Air France left Nairobi a couple of years ago and its East African network has been virtually blank ever since. Sky Team is definitely becoming the Alliance with the strongest presence in Africa.

Of all the 3 alliances, Skyteam will have the best African coverage, with AF's west african network, KL in the east and KQ to all 4 corners of the continent. Even with SA's membership into Star Alliance, it would still be hard to beat. JNB is way too south to be an African hub, whereby NBO is strategically positioned to serve Africa to the west, north & south; Europe to the north; and Middle East & India to the east.

But AF Cabin Crew clarified that he was not clear in saying that Kenya would be an "associate" ... so let it be clear, Kenya will not be a full SkyTeam member. :P

@KEno

I agree with you that sky will have the best coverage in Africa with KLM, AF and KQ.

But don't forget that SA has bought Air Tanzania and builds up a hub in Daressalam. And if their plan to establish the new Nigerian Eagle Airlines with a hub in Lagos will go through, SA will be a really big player in Africa - as strong as sky.

KQ has a much stronger presence in East Africa than SAA and Air Tanzania do, and KQ has quite a few more routes and frequencies.

@ SafetyDude

sure KQ is stronger in east Africa, but I didn't doubt that. I only said that SA is building up a hub in Daressalam, which will give them a reasonable presence in East Africa.

Regarding SA`s plans with Lagos will materialize, SA will have three hubs in Africa and therefore be only big player for intra African flights.

Sky only will have one hub in Nairobi. Therefore they will far away from SA`s intra African presence. Where they will be unrivaled is their European-Africa network. AF and KLM have many flights between Europe and nearly every African Capital something what Star will never come equal to, not even with Hubs in Lagos, Daressalam and JNB.

It is hardly surprising that KQ will join SkyTeam - KLM holds 26% in KQ and have made a substantial investment in there relationship with KQ (source: KLM 2003-2004 Annual Report and 20F).

For most travelers (not us airline folk) who participate in an alliance, they probably only care that they can get to a place, and most worry about flying an "African airline" and would rather fly with a European airline.

Does anyone know how to make the route map that was listed by KEno at the top of this thread? I know there is a web site, that allows you to make it temporarily, but I want to make a permanent, printable one...or at least one I can save on my computer.

Thanks!

What does being an associate member exactly mean and entails? Will Frequent Flyer members of any SkyTeam airline be able to earn miles on KQ? Vice Versa? And what does KQ need to do to become a full member of SkyTeam?

Thanks in advance.
