Southwest Expanding In BUF

Wed Aug 04, 2004 6:17 am

I heard today on a local radio station Southwest is adding a daily flight to TPA bringing WN's total up to eleven here. I know they have been cutting flights in some places but is this a flight they saw enough demand for to take away a flight from another city so that it could be added? We already have a one stop through BWI to TPA, will this be discontinued? New schedule takes effect 9/15/04.

This addition isn't surprising. None of the Upstate airports have a nonstop to TPA right now. BUF especially could probably support one; should be no trouble for a Northeastern metro area of 1.3 million. UA used to fly ROC-TPA in the early '80s.

I'm surprised they didn't add FLL first, though. JetBlue has said they want to fly from the Upstate airports directly to Florida directly with the EMB-190's. FLL is the likeliest candidate there, given B6's focus operation, the lack of current FLL nonstops, and presence of an MCO nonstop at all four markets.

Yes, this is one of good service from BUF. You will wait for EMB-190 is come in for next year in August 2005. They will make announcement with their new service to FLL & MCO.

Jim,

" FLL is the likeliest candidate there, given B6's focus operation, the lack of current FLL nonstops, and presence of an MCO nonstop at all four markets."

Here at SYR, we have a whopping Saturday-only 733 on US to MCO. TMA flies 6x weekly (x Tuesday) to SFB, and it's always full. We had TMA to FLL in the winter- this was also full. Apparently, TMA needed to re-deploy the aircraft elsewhere for the summer season, so we lost our 6x weekly non-stop to FLL. Hopefully, if the TMA flight doesn't return this winter, SYR will get it back with B6 again when the EMB-190's arrive. We desperately need another daily to MCO/SFB. Preferably MCO for me, though.
We also had a short-lived Tampa service, using PIE. I don't believe it was ever non-stop; there is a trip report on A.net that described a stop in FLL. So, either way, we had at least a one-stop.

P.S. Could SYR support a TPA/PIE non-stop? We've got ~775,000 metro, as per 1999 government figures.

Not sure how accurate this website is?...but Faremeasure.com shows an average of 450 pax fly between BUF and Tampa daily. This makes TPA a surprising 5th on the BUF list and not far behind Orlando's 613 daily pax. If this is remotely accurate, then a daily nonstop to Tampa is a lock to do well. Between SYR and Tampa it shows 165 and ROC 171.

Then again it shows BUF-ATL only draws 485 pax a day and that doesn't seem accurate at all when compared to Tampa.

It's anybody's guess if it's accurate or not. In my opinion, it's a bunch of crap.
For example, there are more than ~200 daily passengers from SYR to Orlando. I can speak for that, too. There is a non-stop to SFB 6x weekly on TMA- it's always packed to the brim; all the legacy carriers, and jetBlue. Everybody carries their fair share to Orlando- there's without a doubt more than ~200 daily passengers.

But, if it is indeed accurate (probably not, but still), than we can definitely support a daily non-stop to TPA  Big thumbs up! Bring it on, WN (oh, how I wish they served SYR  Sad)!

Those daily pax figures cant be right. Only 12 people on average per day between BUF-PIT. Give me a break.

At an average fare of $327 one way, how many local passengers did you think would opt to fly the 186 mile trip between Buffalo & Pittsburgh?

Any news on when rwy 14-32 will open? We're going to have awesome views on touchdowns on 32 from Flying Tigers.

Danny, you work at Flying Tigers?

I cant wait for 14-32 to open. Anyone know how the approach patterns to 14 will be. I live in Northwest Amherst and the current approach to 23 from the south and west is right over our subdivision.

I heard from an airport runway construction worker the new runway at BUF will be finished on August 15th. I'm sure there is a possibility of the project being delayed. After runway 14-32 is open to mainline traffic, runway 5-23 will be closed and a different construction company will rebuild it.

FYI- he also mentioned the end of the existing main runway 23 (by the thruway) will be raised by 6 feet.

Again, this is just what an airport runway construction worker told me, so it's not official.

I guess hardly anyone on those BUF-PIT flights actually gets off at PIT! My cousin lives in Pittsburgh and she never flies to/from Amherst. I agree though, those numbers are way off in some cases.

I too can't wait until 14-32 is recommissioned for use. What a cool sight it will be to see A320's and 737's using that runway. Does anyone know exactly how long it will be when completed? I heard 7,100' but then I read something that the extension was 1,000' (which added to the existing length would only make it 6,400'). At 7,100' it would be longer than any runway at MDW, DCA or even LGA.

The main runway 5-23 is supposed to be shut down for a period 3-5 months starting in June 2005. Should be quite a ride when the winds are strong out of the southwest since either 14-32 would be a nice crosswind landing.

From the NFTA website last year, they are lengthening the runway 23 end (out towards the Thruway) by 750 feet and shaving 200 feet off the runway 5 end to improve the safety zone and make it up to current FAA regs. When finished, it sounds like 5-23 should end up a bit longer than it is now.

I think Tex must have Betazoid empathic abilities, reading my mind. I wanted to fly PIT-ROC a couple of months ago and US wanted $358 rt with two months advance notice. They can stuff it. If WN or AirTran were offering RT fares below $100, like WN does on Texas intrastate hops, I'd bet the route would fill at least a couple of daily roundtrips. Lots of people in Upstate know people in Pittsburgh, and there'd be more business traffic too.

Glad to hear that BUF's runway projects are moving along. I'm still unhappy that ROC gave up on trying to really extend 10-28, and settled for a 1,000' soft-pavement override zone.

Like I said in another post...great news for ROC. So when does Southwest start BUF-FLL flights?!? You gotta think someone is going to jump on that segment especially with winter fast approaching.

If WN doesnt somebody else really should. I could see DL or US really capitalizing on the BUF-FLL market. The numbers might not be the 465 that the website says, but i wouldnt doubt that it is close to that. BUF-FLL would certainly do well.

I can see US jumping on a BUF-FLL route but who knows what their future holds? Airtran seems to be a minor player here. I'd rather see WN or B6 take up the route. Those 2 carriers are so popular in Buffalo (and nationwide) that they could do whatever they want at BUF and dominate.

As a side not about US, my buddy who lives in Tampa flew them last week TPA-PIT-BUF-PHL-TPA. He was pretty harsh about the whole experience. Said the 757 interior was dripping water (from the A/C condensation) on his head for 1/3 of the flight and the F/A's said "it's normal". He also said his layover connections were 2 hours late both ways for "maintenance" trouble down the line. At PHL he called me so I could check flight tracker to see how far away his inbound connection flight was since US was not giving accurate info to the people waiting in thew gate area. Anyway, moral of the story is he is looking forward to those WN nonstops to TPA and so are many others.

To all:

I have also heard of an Aug/Sept completion date; my neighbor is an electrician working on the lighting system and they have to be finished sometime therein. I might see him today so maybe I can get an update.

The sun will be a problem for photography from F-T when 14-32 is being used; just stand in the parking lot anytime now in the pm and try and watch arrivals/departures at the terminal.

I am always pleased to hear of any additional flights by WN out of BUF. They have rapidly become a favorite of mine when travelling. I know there are lots of WN bashers out there, but I'm yet to have a bad experience with them, and that included alot of BUF-PHX. It's a long flight on a 737, but the 73G's are quite alright and it's not an issue with me. I understand that jblue will offer BUF-PHX soon. It will be interesting to compare.
I still will not fly US unless absolutely necessary given my long history of problems with their service and DL is out until (if) they bring back mainlime service to BUF; BUF-ATL on an RJ...never again. Hi AirTran...

KBUF737: I also can't wait for 14-32 to open. Let someone else listen to the 6am departures for awhile...  Big grin

regards,

FYI - Denver Broncos arrive this afternoon on a United 763. The flight is designated UAL9902 and it's ETA is around 4:45 - 5:15pm. Can someone snap a nice pic for the database? I'd love to see it.

Hey, no problem on the hint. Just let us know if you post the pictures anywhere? I like to see unusual planes at BUF. keep in mind for the season that the Bills opponents from the East and Central time zones usually arrive about 24 hours prior to game time. West coast opponents may come in a day earlier. Flytecomm is a good place to check arrivals. Anyone know if the Bills will be using World Airways MD-11 for their charters this year?

I so desperately hope. I guess we'll know in 2 weeks when they have they're first away game against Indy.

I have photos of the 76 in the queue. I send you an e-mail of it, I don't like giving out secrets(posting photos in the queue) but I desperately want somobody's opinion on one, check your e-mail too Daniel.

EDIT: Zrb, i had your e-mail as withheld, do you mind posting it? If not I can try and find another way to send you the link.
