Mesaba Crew Base At CVG

I flew Mesaba last week DTW-PWM. I was surprised to learn the flight crew was based at CVG. They only have about 10-12 flights a day out of CVG so why do they have a crew base there?

I believe they also have a maintenance facility there.

[It is uncanny b/c for a while, NW had a MX facility @ ATL and Mesaba had one @ CVG - that could be a good trivia stumper]

Yup on both, although the maint is now outsourced.

DC8jet - what day were you flying DTW-PWM last week?

As mentioned we have a crew base in CVG because of heavy maintenance that used to be done in CVG. Now there is only night line maintenance, like in DSM. But the company sees it being cheaper to operate the station as a crew base than stage crews for overnights in hotels. Mesaba has 3 overnighting planes in CVG and the NWA schedule has the avros doing the terminating flights and the originating flights.

The costs in closing the base would be tremendous. Reason being is that the company would have to follow the pilot and flight attendant contracts for involuntary displacements. This means paying for folks to move, retraining etc... After the CWA and RHI debacle where they violated the pilot contract I think they learned their lesson. The subsequent costs to the company in losing that grievance were more that what they probably wanted to pay so they'd be wise to follow the contracts if they were to close CVG.

I flew DTW-PWM on 9/11 and PWM-DTW on 9/20. The return flight had a DTW based crew.
