747 Heaven...ANC?

Wed Oct 20, 2004 6:14 am

Does ANC see more 747 traffic than any other airport in the world? They sure have a ton of cargo/fleet flights up there.

While ANC does get a whole lot of 747s, I do believe that Tokyo Narita sees the most 747 traffic.

ANC sees a lot of Freighter 747 traffic, but with the exception of Korean, China, and Asiana, almost no passenger 747 traffic.

While ANC sees a lot of 747s, especially relative to the size of the city (approx 260K people), I doubt it is even in the top 10 for daily 747 movements. That doesn't make any less of a spotters paradise though - if only it wasn't an ocean away from me!

Not even close. NRT has far more. I'm sure other airports as well such as LHR, HKG etc. probably have more.

Narita is almost ridiculous in the number of 747's you'll see.

Check out my shameless plug:

(Sorry about the annoying copyright, but you just never know.)

I count five 747's in this shot, including the tails of Reso'cha and Lufthansa planes to the extreme right. (btw, that ANA 747 three planes down was my flight.)

And a couple more shots from the database:

JAL's got like 76 747's, ANA has around 30, Northwest has more than 40... and at any given time a good number of them are at NRT. That's not including 747's from KLM, Lufthansa, Korean, Singapore, Cathay, BA and others that usually have one or two hanging around NRT at any given time.

I can see how it's easy to assume that ANC has more heavy 747 traffic due to most planes landing there being cargo planes. However its 747 frequency compared to other airports. For instance, 747 frequency at NRT is much more pronounced compared to ANC thus NRT having way more 747's... or heavies for that matter.

I don't know of the exact numbers but I'm willing to bet that, in addition to NRT, HKG, SIN, ORD, JFK, and LHR see more 747 cycles than ANC.

L-188 I believe CX also had passenger 747 traffic at ANC.
