Delta MD90s
I was just curious as to what the future of Delta's MD90s is. I've heard there was plans to shift them to the Shuttle operation, but recently DL announced plans to scale back the number of aircraft types they operate and some seem to think that the MD90 is on the chopping block so to speak. Any thoughts?

The 90 is here to stay. They just approved the fleet to get the new interior mod done while the insulation mod happens.

I'm glad to see that the MD-90s are here to stay, they do have commonality with the MD-88 and SLC would hurt without them due to its high altitude. When I used to hear of its disposal I used to get so angry because it's such a waste when an airline operates a plane for such a short time. Thank goodness they're keeping them.

The insulation mods DalMd-88 is talking about are the retrofitting of a new sheet of insulation in the cabin which would prevent a fire from spreading. I saw an MD-88 the other day, believe it was ship N903DL and its retrofitting had been completed. All it looks like is a yellow color tarp throughout the cabin ceiling. I believe the whole fleet will be completed fairly soon. Anyways, this modification doesn't really mean much as it was forced upon by the FAA and if DL wanted to sell it's MD-90s, they would be in a much better selling situation by having the mods done than saying to the new buyer, here...so many MD-90s and oh...they also have to have these modifications done to them per FAA, so anyways, I don't see the MD-90s staying.

what's the difference between the 737-300 and 737-300G?
And what are you guys talking about DL doing with all the routes these a/c fly? They certainly don't have the money to replace these a/c with newer a/c, specially after the debt from the buying binge they had in the late 90's?
I see the 737-200/300s returned to the leasors and retired respectively, other than that, the 767-200s will stay because they are paid for and are operating important routes such as CA, and FL.

As Bucky already said the 90s are going to SLC. That's a done deal. They've recently brought the V2500 overhaul inhouse and are installing the new cabin interiors in them.
Seems to me like Delta is planning on keeping them around. Believe me I'd like nothing better than to see them leave as I'm in SLC mtc. and I HATE working on them. The last thing I want to see is us becoming the main base for them. But as they say you can wish in one hand and sh#t in the other and see which one fills up first.

I thought DL's MD-90s were already main-based here in SLC? I know there was a few in DFW. but I've only REALLY seen them here.

They are going to SLC and they are here to stay from what I have heard. It's a good thing. I have also heard that MOST 757 are going to Song eventually as part of the fleet plan. The 737-200/300 are going to be history and I doubt we will see any 777 purchases or replacement for 767 series anytime soon.

The 90s have always done a lot of their flying out of SLC, and lately they do most of their flying out of SLC. But the crews were based at DFW. So really, not much will change for the aircract themselves, but the crews will now be based at SLC.

Ahhh, I see, I see. I can't wait to go spotting again today, the rain ought to make for some interesting approach shots from my house in North Salt Lake...been a while since I took a decent photo of the -90. Just out of curiousity, What ever happened to the supposed 75/130 MD-90s DL was supposed to order along with 100's of 733s?

Speaking of new interiors, are there any pics of DL aircraft with the new interior? I have yet to see how they look.

The insulation mod has always been on the approved list for the MD-90, it has to be done per the FAA. It's not just cabin either, all the metalized mylar covered insulation must either be removed or isolated from wiring. This AD came as a result of the Swissair MD11 crash. Nearly the entire aircraft has this insulation in it, not just the cabin. The HMV aircraft have been done during their overhauls and I think they are almost done. Any aircraft that wasn't due for overhaul before the AD deadline has been done on mod line at an AeroMexico facility. The MD90's will also get the new interior done when they get the insulation.

I'm so glad to hear that the MD-90's going to stick around. They used to come into Billings (I so so so wish they still did). Those are one of the neatest aircraft I've ever seen and ridden on. I love the dramatic takeoff in the 90. Maybe one day they'll be back at old BIL.

I am glad the MD90s aren't leaving DL's active fleet! I love all the Douglas twin jets from the DC-9 to the 717! Most of the DL MD90s have been repainted as well. I flew on ship 9216 last year in the widget colors. I notice it has just been repainted in the new colors within the last couple of months.

Actually all DL MD-90s are in the new colors, DL has no aircraft in the old old colors, so essentially we only have 2 DL paintschemes now. Strange.

It should hardly be a surprise to anyone that Delta is keeping the magnificent MD-90s, oddballs that they are.
Plus, the resale value on any MD-90 is probably pretty poor.
