It said in a thread about AA's 3rd quarter results that they are planning on installing lie flat seats in business class. Anybody have information/details?

On their 777 and 763? Wow that will be interesting as the 763 does not have much of a business class. But cant wait to see this happen.

Yes, lie-flat seats in B/C are in the picture. It was obvious that we were falling behind when BA introduced the lie-flat seats in B/C ages ago. Since then, we've seen Virgin, Air France, Lufthansa, Continental, Northwest, JAL and others we compete with introduce a lie-flat seat. Financial constraints have prevented AA from putting them in sooner.
I still don't have a timeline, but it has to be done if we're to keep any premium passengers. I believe the 767-300 will receive them first, because it is a 2-class aircraft, and most airlines with a 2-class configuration have a far superior seat, and also because the 777s still have First Class, so full fare B/C pax on the 777s can be upgraded to the Suites on that aircraft until lie-flat seats are installed.
With only 22 seats in Business Class on the 763, that will be the place to work in the cabin. No more MRTC will mean 196 or 197 in coach on that thing!

I have two clients who were invited to Dallas about two months ago to view and test the new seat. There was also an article about it Business Travel News around the same time. They told me it looks similar to Lufthansa's new J/C seat.
A JFK-based friend of my wife's, who used to be an AA F/A herself, said the current 763 seats in J/C aren't too comfortable, though I didn't seem to mind when we flew them.

Theyr'e okay if you're not going to sleep, such as on a day flight from Europe to the U.S. But if you're going to sleep on an all-nighter, they're very awkward and your body feels contorted in a strange position. I get complaints from passengers all the time about it.

Lie-flat seats. I doubt they will be fully flat like BA and VS. If they're anything like Lufthansa's, then they won't be like the beds at the British carriers. Still, it's a BIG improvement over the 1997-vintage seats currently on the 763.

That would also mean that upgrades using miles or VIPs will be harder to come by.

Well technically those "beds" you talk about are not lie flat because they recline to 180 degrees, well before you get too excited, its more like 184 degrees because planes dont cruise leve, so NW really has the only true flat bed reclining at 176 on its own and the plane takes care of the last 4 to truly make it 180.

I'm really confused. To me, "flat" has always meant 180 degrees regardless of the attitude of the a/c. 176 degrees, even in a slightly nose up attitude, is still not flat.

I recently fleww the AA 777 in Business class and thought that it was very good. You may think that it doesnt look good but it is actually finaminal. It is almost a life-flat and i was asleep for half the flight. Really allows for the time to go by. Also there is great legroom as long as you are not in the bulkhead. So if the 763 is going to get anything similar to what the 777 has I cant wait!! That means truly flat beds to Hawaii.

Its an extrememly comfortable seat to sit in for a long time. I fall asleep quickly in it. They were made by BE Aerospace and would absolutely stand on my head for a row of them for my house if they were going to the dump after being removed ?

Although certainly only a small reason in the grand scheme of things, the intruduction of AirTran on high traffic routes has hurt AA's the bottom line. For instance, the addition of a couple Airtran DFW-LAX flights has forced AA to lower their fares to all the LA area airports (AA flies to all five). For example, i paid 313 dollars for a DFW-LGB roundtrip last spring, and nowadays the same flight is about 100 dollars less. The same can be said for BWI, LAS, and MCO. Part of the reason Delta failed at DFW was because they were caught in the crossfire. If southwest heads up to DFW, I imagine things will only get worse.

I heard yesterday that the new Business Class seats will be installed in 2006. Also heard that AA is looking to follow Continental's lead with the transatlantic configured 757s, though nothing definite. Something to watch.
