When Did NW Start Putting A320's In The Desert?

When did NW start putting Bus's (320) in the desert? Are they already shipping out the oldest A320's?

i think they were pulled post 9/11 but are back on line

Northwest parked a ton of planes post 9-11, but yeah they are probably back online now.

Maybe that old joke is true "When Northwest parks its last A320, the crew will be ferried back on a DC-9"

Thanks guys...I thought all the 9/11 desert planes were DC-9(s), 742, and some DC-10. I had no idea that the A320's also went to the desert. Thanks again

I can't be specific about the A320's but are they all back in line? Initially when the B RWY opened at NRT, they had services to TPE with an A320 (known as narita special) but since the capacity was too small, they convereted this to a 757 recently) Well glad if they are all in the line.

The last four A320's have been placed in active service. There are some 757's still in the desert.

My understanding of the parking of modern NW aircraft is as follows. All modern aircraft that ended up in the desert were due for heavy maintenance. Due to the maintenance costs involved, and fact that the aircraft were not immediately needed because of lower demand, they parked them. Any remaining modern aircraft will return to NW revenue service as soon as the heavy maintenance can be afforded, or demand forces them to return the aircraft following maintenance.

I believe there is only one 757 still parked in the desert and its coming back on-line here next month.

Hey

maybe those where new A320s to be delivered? I know South West sometimes keep there new 737s in the desert until they are ready for delivery.

clc has it right - 5 757s in the desert and no plans to bring them back anytime soon - no planned expenditures on them at this point. they are all due for major checks, so it will be costly to bring them back until absolutely needed. there were 4 320s in store too and they all came back this last spring - again they were all parked prior to checks.
