CO Emergency Landing In EWR Soon + ATA Rumors

Sat Oct 30, 2004 11:30 am

Dad just called to tell me that a CO plane is inbound to land with no flaps... He believes it's a 757, but not positive... I'll give more info as it comes up

It was also reported in the manager meeting's CO is trying to buy ATA's 757's... I'll also give more info on this as it comes up...

I heard that WN is also talking with ATA about buying their 757's and 738's. Big grin

The latter wouldn't be entirely out of the question.

Looks to be two possibilities... 455 from PBI or 1700 from FLL. Both show on the ground in EWR, but not in the gate(s).

As for the ATA... Wonder if it's the 752's, 53's, or both.... hmmmm...

Their 757s have never been a consideration, I assure you...  Big grin

IAHcsr,

He said that it probably still hadn't landed because he didn't see any crash trucks go out, and that it was supposed to be at one of the gates he was working.... Maybe it's not a '57.... can you check to see any arrivals going into any of the 70's gates?

CO 1769 LASEWR ship 138 gate 75 eta 1229

That's the only one I see into a '70' gate.. and it is a 757. I didn't look at it earlier because it's still 1.5 hours out.

Would the pilots get a warning in the cockpit that the flaps had failed? Or do they find out by trying to use them?

If its the latter, why were the flaps deployed 90 minutes out?

I would say a warning of some sort popped up ... This is not from certain knowledge, just many years of working with the aircraft that has given me a basic understanding of such things.

I expect WN to buy/acquire some of TZ's 738s, but I wonder how things are going to go at MDW with AirTran now having gained control of ex-TZ slots. That'll be interesting - and very good for Chicago consumers.

As for FedEx, yes, they do seem to drop quite a few bits; I knew they had a door to door service, but dropping things into people's backyards on the way to the airport is quicker service than most people like!

Ha, ha, ha.

Now everyone wants ATA's B757's.

I bet if they had DC-9's, NW would go for them.

So what is the CO flight number? CO1769 is still in Vegas and scheduled to depart at 3:15.

CO has been very pleased with their 753s. It wouldn't superise me to see them interested in them. They could use these A/C to replace some 767s on domestic routes and some others like EWR-SDQ. It has the reange and better economics with similar capasity.

What I don't like about the 753 is that it takes the place of widebodies which is what some pax would prefer b/c of the PTV's and more space. Like the 753 holds more than the 762 which it's used to high capacities like Florida or transcon instead of a widebody.

I guess no news is good news. Another successful landing by a well trained crew that handled an abnormal situation. Happens everyday in this country. Makes me laugh once again about the latest pilot pay thread above.

Heres the story....

Apparently what happens on 757's is that when the flaps are selected from 0-1 or 1-0, the flaps will move, but the indicator takes a couple seconds... So this happened and the pilot (presumed to be new on the type) saw this as the flaps malfunctioning and assumed they were inop or something. Radioed to EWR of the situation and ended up lowering the flaps electrically just to make sure.... Mechanics on the ground checked it out and found no problems at all...

Reading your description of what happened it was pilot error. But in his defense, he was unsure of his flap situation, he took the safe option for his passengers and everything came out ok, so I don't blame him one second.

WHy would WN acquire the 737-800s...isn't there the issue of adding an extra flight crew person?
