Strange Pod On Tristar Behind Nose Gear

Hello All,

I was wondering if anyone had any idea what the long pod located on the underside of the fuselage just behind the nose gear of this Worldways Canada L-1011 Tristar is? I have never seen it before on any of the other Tristars. I have also included pictures of the aircraft with its previous two operators PSA, and AeroPeru also showing the same pod installed. Could it possibly be an additional fuel tank, just a guess. Your thoughts are welcomed.

The lobe was to give protection(in case the nose gear failed to come down) for a lounge located under the main cabin. PSA L10s were the only aircraft to have this feature. I'm not sure whether PSA went ahead with the lounge but had the lobe put into place anyhow.

Ah, that explains things. I had heard about that lounge, and that is why the aircraft had port side airstairs installed, something which was also unique to PSA's Tristars. Thanks for the help!

The lobe is only there on aircraft equipped with the lounge- yes, PSA had the lounge, if my info is correct.

Yep, PSA definitely had the lounge. Interesting to see where their L1011s ended up.

Does anyone know what the lobe was made of? Was it a solid piece of some tough material or was it a fairing over some type of tail......er nose skid?
Probably a dumb question as they are still on the planes but was it removable?

It is a structural modification to the airframe (beefed up) that was required for the FAA to certify the aircraft with the lower level lounge. Specifically the airframe had to be beefed up to protect occupants of the lower lounge should the aircraft have to make an emergency, gear retracted landing before the lounge could be completely evacuated (or evacuation be impossible for some reason). Essentially, the bump is just aluminum skin covering the reinforced airframe members and being part of the airframe structure, it's permanent.

Just rechecked my information on the Tristar mod and it's actually bolted onto the airframe. Physically it could be removed but doing that would probably bring up other issues. Much simpler to simply leave it in place.
