Unusual Livery On Bmi Regional's Leased ATR-42
Bmi have decided to promote it's long-haul services from MAN this winter by unveiling a somewhat 'tropical' livery on it's leased ATR-42 which is to be used on the LBA-LCY service which commenced today.
Should help us dream of sunnier climes now that the UK is plunged into darkness and mirk for the winter.

I had no idea they'd add ATRs to their fleet! Nice to see them go for props, but did it really have to be a 19-years-old ATR42? Couldn't they get their hands on something more modern, at least an ATR42-500 or something?
Anyway, a great livery if you ask me. As the adverticed destinations are most probably winter-only destinations, this special livery unfortunately won't be around for too long.

Ndebele, the ATR42 is only leased, to be used on LCY-LBA until more ERJ145s arrive I think

The ATR is leased until the ER3 (EMB135) is certified for used in/out of LCY. Nice little bit of advertising if you ask me, especially as it will be flying in and out of LCY, where no doubt alot of business men/women will be waiting for the flights, maybe thinking of summer holidays while waiting in the cold and wet british winter!

Nice to see BD are focusing on the important things in life. ATR services from Spoke to Spoke!
Shouldnt they be investing in growing Manchester connections rather than playing with an ATR on routes into LCY - a very high cost airport with very very few profitable routes...
The 145's and 135's should be tasked to smaller German, Polish and Scandinavian cities with a high Star Alliance presence to feed transatlantic services.

The two ATR-42s are operated by Air Atlantique. One is operating the LBA-LCY route until the ERJ-135 certification hopefully comes. The other is currently on the BD365/366 MAN-GLA-MAN service on a morning, and is then used as a bmi regional back-up a/c for the rest of the day. This is apparently until another ERJ-145 is delivered. I believe this could be operating until April 2005.
I really wish BD could speed up the painting of their a/c. There are now no less than 6 different liveries applied to BD a/c.
- bmi / bmi regional (current scheme);
- old blue/grey livery with new 'bmi' titles;
- old blue/grey livery still with old 'BM' logos (as worn by most ERJ-145s);
- Star Alliance (current scheme);
- old Star Alliance 'washing line' livery (still with AN/MX logos & missing
LO/JK/OZ/US etc...);
- Carribean advertising scheme (on ATR-42);

Look at it from a financial perspective... its probably way cheaper to paint that aircraft in that scheme than the full BMI get-up. Just a thought... im not a bean counter, but know they look at all that stuff.

Cute advert - might be a bit offputting to some pax however, who might think that the flights to the Caribbean are actually operated by the equipment sporting the palm tree paint job.

P.S. I would agree with the comment about BD focussing on the non-essential. Pick a hub, ANY hub, and build it. Stop faffing about with point to points for 11teen different UK cities including the 87 or so different WW mini hubs.

Cospn - yours was a bmibaby flight. At least the WW a/c are all in the current WW livery, except for the one which promotes Welsh Tourism.

BW - don't ignore LGW. WW have a flight to there, so it MUST be a hub ! For the next 10 minutes anyway, until they change their mind and create a new hub in Swindon or Tunbridge Wells.

For all bmi's non-committal sins, that's what they have been doing at LBA over the past few years, admittedly very steadily but to the point where they now have 22 departures a day. For donkeys years all they served from LBA was LHR but over the past few years have steadily added GLA, EDI, BRU, CDG, JER, ORK and now LCY.
Who's to say that they won't consider adding further services from LCY in the future. Once the ERJ-135 is certified at LCY then they would also have an ideal aircraft to open services to other existing BD cities such as GLA or ABZ as well as giving AF and BE a run for their money to CDG and BHD respectively.
