We were spotting on Saturday 11/6. Continental Flt 34 was leaving down runway 15L and there was obvious smoke coming from the gear. The gear remained down for a short while after takeoff.
Anyone hear anything?

No,but it sounds like the gear overheated, i think this is common, because at my local airport, we see at least one a/c like that every week, the a/c here also let the gear stay down for a while, i think it is to check for fire.

It is usually brake dust blowing off from hard braking during the prior landing. There is no reason for a temperature build up during takeoff to start a fire. The gear being out for longer than expected was probably just a coincidence.

If it was after the plane was airborne it was probably brakedust. When the gear retracts the brakes are automatically applied to stop the wheels from spinning before they enter the gear bays. Blackish brake dust is visible coming from the brakes as illustrated in the photo below.

I noticed it starting within the first 1000 feet of the T/O roll.
