MD11 Being Ferried By Boeing

Wed Nov 10, 2004 2:38 am

Searching the AirNav Flight Tracker I discovered a MD-11 being ferried under a Boeing callsign from TUS to YUM, then on to GYR. Anyone have any pictures or other information on this fine Tri-jet?

Strange about the YUM stop, but if it's ex-JAL, I'd assume it's in GYR for freighter conversion and then on to UPS. I thought UPS did most of their converting at Marana though...

it will be going into storage @ GYR.

They are obviously flight testing the aircraft, hence the stop in YUM.

Flytecomm shows it starting at Narita under the Boeing callsign. So...it is indeed probably a JAL aircraft being ferried from Japan. The stops in TUS and YUM before going to GYR do seem a little odd, though. TIMCO does work for World, and World will be getting some MD11 freighters in mid-2005. World currently has an ex-Delta pax MD11 at Timco Goodyear for return-to-use checks (it will run as a passenger jet, not a freighter). But I don't know where this ex-JAL MD11 is going. On a similar topic, does anybody know why that Mandarin Airlines MD11 is still sitting around in storage when there is plainly a demand for MD11s as cargo aircraft?

If it is to be a UPS airplane, then it is being sent to Phoenix for a final inspection and a transfer of title to UPS. Then the airplane will be ferried to SASCO (Singapore) for conversion to a freighter.

Was this a/c a 'trade-in' for the several new 747F's JAL has recently had or will have delivered to them? As to delivery to Arizona, they may have tax laws as to the purchase of aircraft that favor it as to UPS or another user.
