NW Meal Service
I just purchased my tickets for Christmas break and am booked on NW164 SEA-MSP and it says I will be served dinner. How is the food in coach? I didn't realize NW was still serving meals you pay for with your ticket on domestic flights anymore.

NW does serve meals at meal times to/from the west coast to the hubs. It's probably a choice of sub sandwich, oreos, carrot sticks, apple, and water in Y class. Hope this helps. You may still want to grab something more substantial at the airport.

Sounds healthy, I usually get something at the airport anyways because I am a person who cannot sit in one place for very long when I am at an airport (unless I find a good spotting place, of course). Thanks.

O, you mean that they are now serving meals??? I was on a 4 hour flight with them during the time in which we should be getting lunch and I had no meal.

Northwest serves complimentary meals in coach (such as they are), on more flights than any other U.S. carrier. Breakfast, lunch, a snack, or dinner are served on all flights between the west coast and our hubs in MSP, DTW and MEM except for eastbound red-eyes. Buy-on-board meals are available on many flights where complimentary meals are not offered; especially low-cost flights to tourist destinations such as Florida.

I knew about the buy-on-board TGI Friday's meals, I tried one and was very unimpressed. That was this summer on a MSP-BOI flight.

Since TGI Friday's food is lack-luster in their restaurants, it's not surprising you found it unimpressive at 35,000 feet!

They serve meals on the coast flights but nothing on the slightly shorter flights like MSP or DTW to PHX, LAS and so. I flew these sectors in 2002, they took 4 hours. Maybe they do Buy on Board now on these flights. I am sure also United does something like a sandwich on flights around 4 hours.
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

They age their culinary fare from a remote secret underground location! Some of the food dates back to the days when those DC 9's were in their formative years; back in the swinging 60's. LOL I have an idea! Why not serve lizard like that foreign airline did. uuuum uuuum good!

I would use the term sub sandwich losely, as it is tiny. As far as healthy, 1 slice or turkey and a big slice of processed cheese is not the greatest, but it adds up when you bring a grilled chicken sandwich with you
. Breakfast is a bagel, banana and sugary yoghurt.
I would think CO would be the number one food server in coach, as every flight over 2 1/2 hours that is at a meal time includes food. It is easy for CO to do this because they cater all their own flights and have for years. No expensive subcontracters like LSG Sky Chefs or Gate Gourmet and a good infrastructure based out of LA.

Continental may well serve food on more flights than Northwest. I was quoting a San Francisco Chronicle article I read some time ago.
As we all know, after 9/11 food pretty much disappeared domestically, but is gradually re-appearing. Perhaps at the time I read that article NWA was serving more food, but now Continental holds that distinction.

Back to the topic...
I got to fly to ANC this past summer on NW from MCO via MSP.
My partner and I took an early morning flt from MCO on NW and managed to get First, the breakfast we had was most delightful! From MSP to ANC was Y and in the back of a 757-300 (the cabin is about a foot smaller inside! Eck!) We were served this horidd beef and veggie thing, it was honestly no more than 5 small bites and it was gone! the bread was cold, but then again it was coach.
I tip my hat to NW for continuing to try and serve meals but in coach it's just not gonna work out, my god man - give the customers a voucher and let them go get what they want to eat from inside the airport and let them bring it on board!
So Frugalqxnwa (how do you pronounce that?) if you're flying in first you'll most likely enjoy the meal, however if in coach please think be fore you fly, stop inside a resturant and find something to buy!
Let us know how the flights are! We're all expecting a long report!

About a year ago I had the opportunity to sample NW's F cuisine, and for airline food it was pretty good. Unfortunately, this SEA-MSP flight will be in Y, and I wouldn't expect much for the meal.
As for pronouncing my username, don't. Just say frugal, and people will probably know who you are talking about (I think I'm the only one with that in my username, but I could be wrong). The qxnwa part is in honor of QX and NW. By the way, this trip will also be my first time on QX, and its a DH4.
