Instead of Boeing ending the 757 line, why didn't they develope a NG version? It seems they could/would still get orders for it.

The 757 really did not need much of an NG model. The main reason for the end of the 757 line is the airlines' need for commonality (757/767 commonality is just not enough anymore) and Boeing's protection of their best seller, the 737. Likely, the 757NG will be part of a single bleedless 737 line that ranges from 120-200 (maybe 220) seats.

738 and 739 are poor replacements for the 757, they both are sorely lacking in legs compared to the 757 and both 738 and 739 (until boeing redesigns exit doors) can only seat 189 in a single class configuration, simply not big enough.

The A321 and 738/739 are not pure replacements for the 757, but most airlines were not using the extra range anyway, and the 321 or 738/739 had commonality with their other narrowbodies. Since the type of operation was shorter ranged in nature, commonality was more important downwards than upwards (to the 767).

right, but at least A321 has a comparable seat capacity; 220 v 245
instead B739 will reach maybe just 205 seats,
you can afford losing 20-25 seat but probably not 40!
I do think 737 will never be a 757 replacement, no way...
Even A321 can't do that but, at least in capacity, you can compare them.

I just read about the size and comparing the 737 and 757 and thought it would have been a way for Boeing to steal some more market share and also make a few carriers happy by continuing the 757 line.

In theory yes, but in this market long and thin routes aren't all the rage, so the 757 had to die.

I love the 757 , but it is a gas guzzler - the A321 is almost identical , but is far more economical.........

You'd be suprised... the 757-200 (and *especially* the -300) still to this day have the lowest seat/mile cost of any narrow body family. Spec. fuel consumption is lower in the A321, but the 757 has more seats to devide opperating cost over.

Don't make assumptions about facts you don't know!!!
Hourly fuel burn for the 757-200 is approx 900 gph (VERY GOOD), while the 737-300 (MUCH smaller aircraft) burns nearly the same as the 757-200!
The 727, smaller too burns 1300 gph!
...bottom line is 757-200 fuel burn is in-line with new generation a/c

Perhapse Boeing is planning on different variations of the 7e7 line to cover the market vacated by the 757/767. Thats just a observation and is no way based in fact.
