Will We See DL 764s To Europe?

Mon Nov 15, 2004 12:58 am

One thing I have been wondering for a while is why don’t Delta deploy their 767-400ERs on transatlantic services? I know they use them on high density domestic routes such as ATL-Florida and to Hawaii but have always thought they’d be much better suited to the Atlantic routes, particularly given the rust bucket 763s they put into MAN and other European airports at the moment.

Now I don’t pretend to know exactly how well Delta are doing on the Atlantic routes but if they are anything like some of the other US legacies, they will be doing better on these routes than domestically. Would it not be better to put these “premium” aircraft on premium routes? I’m sure the extra capacity to Europe could be filled and with increasing low cost competition to FL could they swap the aircraft around? Maybe the new more spacious interior refits would provide the opportunity to suitably configure the 764s. Having flown both DL 763s and 764s I would much rather spend 8 hours on the latter. Maybe they could even put a TV in the seatback to give that remote control in the arm rest something more to do than turn a light on.

I know DL purchased the 764s primarily to replace the L1011s on high density domestic routes and they are therefore doing their job, but I can’t help feel they are being wasted, especially when you look at what a good job CO have done with theirs.

So will we see DL 764s in Europe at any point in the future or are they destined to stay put?

I have seen DL 764s regularly at FRA. It's news to me that they don't fly to Europe.

Ive asked this myself a number of times. If continental does it, Delta could do it to. But if you look at the seating arrangements, the 764s in Deltas fleet take more pax, then their 772s. So if Delta would decide to upgrade the pax on certain routes (eg ZRH), it would definetly be with the 777, since this is the next step up from the 763.

IMO Delta should configure some 764s with a less pax layout to offer more C and F classes, as you need on trans continental routes. I think if word got around, that delta is using upgraded and bigger aircraft they would definetly fill those extra seats on the 764.

Maybe with the new plan of opening new international routes and cutting domestic capacity we will se them...though they fly to FRA regularly (I think)

Vimanav,

Are you sure they were DL 764's.i'm 100% sure DL only use the plane on domestic and Hawaiian routes.

The only time i'd expect DL to use 764's to europe, is if all the 772's were used on flights to asia, which at the moment they are not.

DL Does not currently schedule their 400's to Europe. I don't think they would even use them as a last minute equipment swap due to their domestic passenger configuration. DL does use them to LIM though and this has been highly successful. As to the question originally posed "will we see DL 764's to Europe". I believe we will in the fullness of time.

Its news to me that the 764s fly to FRA, there are certainly no photos of them there in the database (thats not to say they don't fly there but not much gets past the lenses of A.net photographers).

It was my understanding they just flew in the US.

Sorry to disappoint but Delta hasn't flown the 400s to FRA at least not as a regularly scheduled flight. We don't have 400 ETOPS qualified AMTs in FRA to perform and sign off the ETOPS pre-departure check. The 400 qual is separate from the 300 qual. I guess if a 400 qual AMT flew over with the AC they could sign it but we wouldn't do that for a regularly scheduled flight.

Considering how long it took them to put them on the flights to Hawaii (due to settling the crew rest stations issues and such), the only way I could see them putting the type on US-Europe flights would be if they ordered additional a/c and had them delivered in the international cabin setup. Considering the airline's current situation, I don't see them ordering anymore 764s for the time being. The only way you'll see a DL flight number attached to a 764 to Europe in the near future would be on a CO codeshare.

Are they not going to progressively fit the entire fleet with new interiors, along with increased pitch etc as announced a few months back?

Could this not be used as an opportunity to reconfigure the 764s for international flying?

Incidentally, exactly how many DL 764s are there?

If delta gets awarded China then they are going to need to re-evaluate their B777 use in the Atlantic..then B767-400 deployment to Europe will be a stronger possibility.

Vimanav,

Are you sure they were DL 764's.

Gentlemen,

My sincere apologies. They were CO's not DL. Cross checked with my own photo-database.

Because the 764's are not configured w/ BizElite seats. They have only the domestic 40" pitch seats, not the international business seats. But who nows, maybe there will be more in Europe. But DL would rather use a plane w/ BizElite seats than domestic seats when flying transatlantic.

COEWR2587,

I understand that they can't/won't just operate them in the current config and that they have a differnet international product but was wondering if they had any plans in the forseable future to make some 764s internationally configured and put them on the busier current 763 routes. I imagine CO will have to do the same and reconfigure some additional 757s with bizfirst with all the extra routes next year.

Yes, there are "plans" to introduce the type to Europe as well as many other scenarios. Whether these "plans" see fruition is yet to be decided. To reiterate from my previous response, I believe some of the 764's will eventually be put into service across the pond but not in the immediate future.
