I've done a search and haven't found anything. Whoever jumps me will get their head bitten off.  Big grin

Did this really happen, or are we talking about someone who's a b*tch with PS?

Cheers!

Danny,

There was a thread about this a while back and it was concluded this was a fake. If nothing else, it seems unlikely the flames would extend forward of the engine at that speed.

Snopes is your friend.

http://www.snopes.com/photos/airplane/fire01.asp

A blazing engine fire may be one of the most frightening sights one could experience on board an airliner, but the scariest thing about this photograph is what a poor job someone did of editing it.

That's what I thought. I found a lot of other photos and movies at http://www.micom.net/oops, and most of them are well known to us. Check 'em out. Pretty cool stuff.

Cheers!

Seems like crap to me... the B777 is at such a speed at that phase of takeoff to where the flame isn't going to reach to far forward... seems as if you're assessment of this photo is correct

No flames in the reflection of the #1 engine on the foreward fuselage.

Fake.

Whoever modified the photo hasn't a clue how a high bypass turbofan engine works and probably has never seen a real engine fire before. Flames do not penetrate the bypass duct.

I know the guy who did that photoshop (he's a member of the forums at some other aviation websites, and also has a site as well), he's very good at photoshopping stuff. The last time that picture made the rounds around here about a month or so ago, he was made aware of the stink some of y'all made and got quite a chuckle about it. The prevailing mood of the thread was that some of y'all here need to lighten up.

I too know the author and he's a well-respected aviation photography and quite frankly he probably knows more about aviation then 90% of the people on this board. I can tell you that the photo is not meant to be a joke. He showed me how he made the photo, the explosion is from a turbine blade failure test of a 777's engine. The white powder should be a clue to anyone who is familiar with the components of the engine. As Srbmod said, lighten up!

thats not funny....a large and possible traumatic fire on an airlane which can result in the fatality of many people is something to be taken very seriously, almost equivilent to yelling "fire" in a theater.....

also, it shows American Airlines in a bad way, to which they can definitely file a lawsuit against the author/artist for bad (not to mention false) publicity and libel

American Airlines should sue his ass off for doing this. If this did the rounds on e-mail it would definitely create a negative impression of the airline.

And what's worse is that people actually think it's real. It has been hanging on the wall in our ramp supervisors' office and apparently they had thought it was real all this time.

yah.its obviously a fake for people who know a bit about aviation/photography/imaging but not a fake for the vast public, and information like this can spread very rapidly..............especially if it hits the general media....

its poor humour and bad taste...
