Afternoon...

Denver's KUSA is reporting a Gulfstream jet has crashed on takeoff from Montrose, CO...No further details, but it is linked off their main webpage:

Don't think so, that was likely the FBO that was handling the aircraft there. I've looked at about 6 different Colorado sources and the same article is there, word for word.

The only Gulfstream I showed departing MTJ was a blocked Gulf 5 due out at 1900z to TEB and the crash happened just before 1800z from the sound of things...

Showing how the media jumped on this a bit, kusa's site is now saying earlier reports of casualties are not confirmed.

Also hearing that it wasn't a Gulfstream, but a Challenger...

Further update from the Rocky Mountain New site...

"The plane was on its way to South Bend, Ind. Kenitzer identified it as a CL-60 Challenger owned and operated by Global Aviation of Los Angeles, a charter service company."

GLB73 was the flight number, reg. still to be deciphered (N604VM possible?)...sister ship GLB39 (N39CD) is currently enroute to ACY...

Same topic is being discussed in another forum. Also that gulfstream would not need to stop unless the passengers wanted it to. If anyone has the reg# than I might have a picture of it as I was at VNY yesterday racking up some hours.

Same topic was started here an hour prior than the other forum and it's not a Gulfstream as stated in that other forum...

Totally agree that the Challenger wouldn't have had to stop for fuel under normal flight circumstances. It certainly has the range to go VNY-SBN. It was to go to Oxford, CT according to Red1's flight tracker, MTJ-SBN-OXC.

Just found out the NBC sports chairman Dick Ebersol was on the flight and is one of the survivors.

It appears that Dick Ebersol's son attends Notre Dame, it is quite possible that he was on the aircraft as well.

Rich VIP's visiting Telluride probably, MTJ is the only airport close to Telluride capable of handling larger aircraft.

According to the local NBC channel in NYC, Ebersol was on the plane with two of his sons and on the way to Indiana to visit the one that goes to Notre Dame. The two pilot were killed but no word on the condition of the rest of the people on board.

Little bit more specific, a CL601, cn 3009, and based at FXE, Ft. Lauderdale-Executive. It had the registration N651AC (Air Castle) reserved...

One small note to add...I wonder if anyone in the news media is going to look closer at reports before publishing them. Go to the foxnews link that AA777jr posted and you may note above to the right that "6 killed in Colo. plane crash" link...The MTJ services girl who gave the briefing earlier about it being a Gulfstream and 6 being onboard and dead gave some duff info (thankfully for the 3 that have apparently survived)...

Fox was wrong, as usual. They fixed it more recently. Their were 6 onboard, with the 2 confirmed dead being the pilots, Ebersol and 2 others surviving and more info needed on the 6th.

Only natural, as plane crashes are by nature confusing occurences.

I'm more inclined to think the more updated the info, the more reliable it is, though. Latest I've seen is the info about Ebersol surviving, one son surviving and one missing. That's more than likely true at this point... we can only hope the second son survived as well.

N873G has been confirmed as the accident aircraft. It had the registration N651AC reserved, per the FAA aircraft registry page.

Registered owner was Hop-A-Jet of Ft. Lauderdale-Executive, but was operating under a Global Air callsign (GLB73).

CNN is reporting that 14 year-old Edward Ebersol has been presumed dead. They also state that the aircraft was not de-iced prior to the flight.

The jetalliance website only shows N39CD in its section for Challenger, but it makes sense they would have another.

Hadn't heard that... New reports said that the aircraft had gone through a fence ot two, and it's hard to imagine him possibly getting nailed just for being -inside- the fence in the Air Ops Area (AOA) under the cirumstances.

Maybe he just had outstanding warrants for something...

Great article OPNL. I think sometimes we have a tendency to not pay as much attention to proper deicing as we should. Just because it's sprayed doesn't mean it's good.

MSNBC reported that authorities found an unidentified body at the crash site. They did not identify the body, but they suspect it is the missing 14 year old boy. Crying

Also, MSNBC reported that the pilot decided not to deice the plane, despite the fact that snow was falling and slush was on the runway. The official incident report at the FAA's website is as follows;

Isn't there some regulation and or rule that the charter company sets for its crew members? I mean yeah thats great that the PIC doesn't feel that there needs to be deicing of the a/c but wouldn't it be in the best interest of the charter company to set these types of rules?

That's not the accident report, just the weather observation around the time of the accident..

This is not an accident report it is a metar weather report for MTJ. Basically, it sez that on the 28 at 1711 zulu, an automated weather report reported that the wind was 6kts from 350 degrees, vis was 1 statue mile in snow, the ceiling was overcast 1100 feet, the temp was minus 02 and the dew point minus 02 degrees and the alt setting was 2997 if I am reading it correctly.
