Sorry to probably burst your bubble, but the plane is likely not landing at Miami. More likely it is some stock footage of a 727-200 landing "somewhere" into the sunset. Even the exterior scenes of the house that were in the show are of a house in the Los Angeles area (Pacific Palisades to be exact).

Sorry...

Hey, I watch the Golden Girls!! Very different, and very funny...  Big grin

btw, I also swore that was a 727-100...and a friend of mine who went to Universal Studios Orlando swears the house is located there. But I can't say for sure on either.

Indeed the house is a part of Universal Studios. Originally on the Studio City in LA lot it was a fixture on the tour for years. They either moved the house to Orlando or built another one there for kicks as well. The house was never a real house in the Palisades as was suggested.

As for the 727 my guess is Eastern or Delta.

Not to be a stickler for details, but the frontage of the house in Golden Girls is a part of the MGM Studios backlot in Walt Disney World, not Universal Studios.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, and Sofia.

It's Sophia.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

The full names are:
  • Blanche Deveraux (Rue McClanahan)
  • Dorothy Zbornak (Beatrice Arthur)
  • Rose Nylund (Betty White)
  • Sohpia Petrillo (Estelle Getty)

And then you have all of the recurring characters...

Going back to the original topic question, I'd venture to guess either American or Eastern.

For more info on the show, click here. It's on Lifetime in about an hour.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Actually, yes the exterior shot IS a real house in the Palisades... a replica was built on the Studio City lot, and in Orlando.

And thanks for the backup on the Pacific Palisades location of the house used in exterior shots in the show, TWFirst!

The folks at the Disney/MGM Studios tour in Orlando showcase this house's exterior on their backlot tour - whether or not it's a reproduction of the ACTUAL house used for the shot I couldn't say, but it's definitely there.

    Keeping with the aviation theme...

Remember when the girls won tickets to be on the game show "Grab That Dough", so they just ran to the airport and flew on a "redeye" to L.A. to make the show the next day? (and their luggage was lost, and they slept in the lobby of a hotel, and their purses were stolen, and they appeared on the game show and flew all the way back to Miami in the same clothes and looked exactly the same when they returned as when they left... hair/makeup still perfect, etc) Big grin  Insane Gee, even if there were such a thing as east-to-west coast redeyes, I wonder how much those walk-up fares were Big grin.... they were always complaining about money problems, yet wore different fabulous 80's outfits in every show. Big grin

And then there was that episode where the 3 of them were flying somewhere so Dorothy could get over her extreme fear of flying (although she always seemed to be flying to NYC or going on vacation, etc), and Rose got on the P.A. system... can't quite remember the details of that one.

"And little Mai Ling... hasn't she suffered enough?"

Rose's great-aunt Gretchen died, and according to "genupsenlucken", the oldest niece, which in this case was Rose, had to give the eulogy. Rose is confident she can give the eulogy but ONLY if Dorothy and Blanche are there. Dorothy reluctantly agrees, only to find out that the funeral is in the Bahamas. Of course, this is where we find out Dorothy has a terrible fear of flying, and Blanche has a recurring dream where she's trapped in an enclosed space with a bunch of bald men, and she hears the voice of God...

As they are getting on the plane, Blanche discovers to her horror that the plane is full of bald men - and captain Lord makes an announcement. Now all three are confronting their fears. Some champagne relaxes Dorothy, Blanche realizes that when they are forced to turn around, her dream is NOT coming true. They convince Rose to get up and give her eulogy right then and there.

By the way, who flew from the Miami area to the Bahamas on prop planes in the mid-1980's?

    TWFirst...

The episode you're referring to is the one where they're flying from Miami to Freeport, Bahamas (or somewhere in the Islands) so that Rose can talk at her much-hated Aunt Gretchen's funeral.

Rose has a fear of public speaking (hence dreading the trip), Dorothy has a fear of flying, ("Don't speak - we agreed it shakes the plane"), and Blanche has a fear (from a previous dream) of being in a confined space with all bald men (which all are, on board the aircraft).

The aircraft flies, "into the path of a tropical storm" en-route (shouldn't they have known that before they took off?!?), and they return to Miami. En-route back, they realize that Rose never got over her fear of public speaking, so she picks up the PA mic and gives the eulogy there.

As the FA says, "Take a seat, lady - this isn't the Copa Cabana!"

Thank you PamAm747... it's all coming back to me now.

I think the more important question is, who flew from the Miami area to the Bahamas on wide-bodied prop planes in the mid-1980's, where there was a curtain separating the galley from the rear of what looked like a business-class cabin... and the p.a. mike was actually outside of the galley in the cabin?  Big grin Big grin

Thank you also N863DA... I should have known you would be a fellow Golden Girls watcher  Big grin Big grin.

Wasn't it interesting that all family funerals and all high school reunions on the show took place in or near Miami, although the girls weren't from Miami and their families didn't live in Miami (save Sophia's brother Angelo).

Rose's Aunt Gretchen (from Minnesota) - funeral in the Bahamas
Dorothy's High School reunion - in Miami, although she went to high school in Brooklyn
Dorothy's brother Phil's funeral - in Miami, although he lived in Jersey City and grew up in Brooklyn

One exception... Big Daddy's funeral was in Georgia.

Remember Candy, the 70 year old flight attendant on the flight from Miami to the Bahamas?

"Did anyone find a large metal bolt? Its from the beverage cart. Yesssss. Uh,the beverage cart. Thats it."

I'm sure Candy is still flying for Delta somewhere. Probably on an international flight.

Dorothy's High School reunion - in Miami, although she went to high school in Brooklyn

She never went to her high school reunion. In the episode Home Again, Rose (Episode 23/24 of Season 7), they just went to another high school reunion disguised as other people.  Smile

    Some more quotes:

From: Bringing Up Baby (Episode 1 of Season 3)

Vetirinarian: There's really nothing wrong with Baby, physically.
Rose: He's got a mental problem.
Dorothy: Four grown women decide to live with a pig and LGW-Luftfahrtgesellschaft Walter (Germany)">HE'S the one with the mental problem?!

    From: ?????

Sophia: ...that peasant girl was me, and that painter was Pablo Picasso.
Dorothy: Ma, I have a feeling you're lying.
Rose: Oh, come on, be positive, Dorothy.

Dorothy: All right. I'm positive you're lying!

From: Scared Straight (Episode 10 of Season 4)

Blanche: ...these are the hardest two words I've ever had to say
    Rose: "Not tonight"?

    From: ?????

Rose: This reminds me of my cousin, Adolph Frickin.
Dorothy: Please, Rose, I don't want to hear about your frickin cousin!

From: Stan Takes A Wife (Episode 11 of Season 4)

Rose: I think you've been dictched, Blanche.
Blanche: If I wanted to know if I'd been ditched I'd have asked an expert. Dorothy, have I been ditched?
Dorothy: Yes. But don't worry, look what it's done for Sonny Bono.

    From: ?????

Dorothy: Since Blanche is having dinner with Jamie, we have a very important decision to make.
Rose: How about pizza for dinner?
    Dorothy: Great idea!
Rose: Do you want to go healthy and get low-fat cheese and whole wheat crust?
Dorothy: Why don't we go really high-fiber and spread ketchup on cardboard? Pizza, damn it, get pizza!

And let's not forget another airplane reference:

Rose is listing the accomplishments of her blind sister, played by Polly Holliday (Flo of "Kiss My Grits" fame from "Alice"), and one of them was "...my sister was the first woman in our town to have had a pilots' license!!".

To which Blanche replies, "well, we've got something in common - I was the first woman in my town to have had a pilot!!".

She never went to her high school reunion. In the episode Home Again, Rose (Episode 23/24 of Season 7), they just went to another high school reunion disguised as other people.

That was an episode, but there was also an episode where Dorothy hosted a high school reunion at their house. Her best friend Trudy (I think that was her name) comes beforehand and fakes her death, picking up their tradition of pranks they played on each other from high school. They went to high school in Brooklyn, but the reunion was in Miami.

Going back to aviation, I know there is one episode where they show a United DC-8, with the title and logo taken off, of course. I think it was in the same episode as the one mentioned above, when Rose goes to visit her sister in Chicago, but I'm not positive.

And continuing with United, I believe in the Episode where Big Daddy dies, Blanche says something to the affect of "well, if your skies are as friendly as you are, I'd love to do dinner sometime" to the ticket agent on the phone.

    Funniest show ever!

... and when it premiered here in Australia back in the 1980s, the whole reason I sat down to watch it and didn't leave the room was because of that opening shot of a 727 at sunset!

At 11 years old, any show showing a plane just had to be cool!  Smile

I haven't been to MIA in years, but the scene looks genuinely like Miami, so the odds are that at the time it was EA or PA; I agree that it always looked more like EA.

So what's next for us? Do we start over?  Big grin

RE: Golden Girls Show: The 727 Landing Belongs To...?

    >>That was an episode, but there was also an episode where Dorothy hosted a high school reunion at their house. Her best friend Trudy (I think that was her name) comes beforehand and fakes her death, picking up their tradition of pranks they played on each other from high school. They went to high school in Brooklyn, but the reunion was in Miami.<<

That is indeed the episode I was referring to.

Isn't it amazing that this unique sitcom still continues to be so popular and loved by so many people around the world?

As a side note, of the four actresses, I think Betty White is the best... just an amazing character actress. If you ever watched her on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, you know what I mean.... not many actors can play such diametrically opposite roles without there being some similarities... for example, when you watch Bea Arthur (real name Bernice Frankel, btw) play Dorothy, you still see a lot of her Maude character. When you watch Betty play Rose, you don't see any Sue Ann Nevins at all. Betty's comic timing is flawless. she continued that brilliance with her cameo in Queen Latifah's "Bringing Down the House" a couple years ago.

    Now, everybody sing along:

"I have to say what I feel,
    Miami's got so much appeal,
A great place to get a seafood meal..
    MI-AM-EE...

    Miami, Miami... you've got style!
Blue skies, sunshine, white sand by the mile..."

"And with this topic, this forum has now officially covered everything in commercial aviation. This was the last stone unturned. We have reached the end of the aviation universe."

Not at all!!! What is with the flight of Fran Fine (The Nanny) to PARIS with Maxwell Sheffield? And the dramatic scene with the air hole on the flight back to NY? I think it was a 747...

That 727 belonged to Delta Air Lines! The reason I know is because that is a generic shot and I saw it on another screen take once. The scene was actually longer and prior to the sun hitting it and causing the glare, you could easily see it was Delta.

Rose: "Can I ask a dumb question?"

Dorothy: "Better than anyone I know!"

    or...

Blance: "I won't stand for it!"

Dorothy: "But I bet you'll lie down for it!"

LOVE that show. And I would have bet Eastern, too.

I love the golden girls too. Even though, they re-run over and over again and I just cannot have enough of the show. I am going to buy the DVD this weekend.

Also, my other favorite is "The Nanny". DON'T FORGET TO WATCH THE NANNY REUNION ON MONDAY DECEMBER 6th @ 7 PM CST on LIFETIME TV CABLE.

What could be more 80s than the golden girls and Eastern 727s?

All in all, it is a funny show. Definately very sexual for a bunch of elderly people living in Miami. This is a VERY good thread though. I never knew that the golden girls were taped in Orlando...nevermind anything being taped down there.

If you like the Golden girls, check out Mama's Family. Also a quality 80s T.V. show. The early seasons feature Betty White and Rue McClanahan. Both are hilarous shows.

Glad to see a group of aviation freaks like me watch the Golden Girls! I love that show and I watch it every single day!

Rose: I got a letter. Uh-Oh, it's from the Department of Water and Coffee.
    Dorothy: (Looking confused) Coffee?
Rose: No thank you, it makes me jumpy.

Aunt Angela: May your shampoo get mixed up with your Preparation-H and shrink your head to the size of a mushroom!

Dorothy: (to Sophia after finding out she poked fun at Rose by impersonating Charlie's voice) Listen you vindictive little sea monkey!

Blanche: (after Sophia and Fidel Santo Domingo got back from a date) Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna have a long, hot steamy bath. With barely enough water to cover my bosoms.
Sophia: You're only gonna sit on an inch of water???

    >>I never knew that the golden girls were taped in Orlando...nevermind anything being taped down there.<<

The Golden Girls wasn't taped in Orlando... a replica of the house was built at Universal Studios there.

And Mama's Family and GG are NOT in the same category. Mama's Family was stupid.

Did you all know that Rue and Bea worked together on Maude?

And I wish I could remember some of the hilarious "Scandinavian" words that Rose used. Also, the exact quote when Blanche called Sophia "Yoda"...

    TWFirst, the scene you requested:

Blanche is upset, and looking to Sophia for comfort and advice...

Sophia: "Just remember these words of wisdom - you're old, you're wrinkled, you sag, get over it!!"

    Blanche: (in horror) "Sophia!!"

Sophia: "So what if you knew Jesus personally? Deal with it you fossil!!".

Blanche: "My mistake - I assumed since you look like Yoda you were also wise..."
